What is "RMP half/half pine"?

Did you do a general web search for staining maple -- plenty of info already out there.

It's pure tung mixed with pine solvent. But honestly, if you don't have a helpful answer, no need to comment. Plenty of info on Google for everything, really. But someone on here will have used the product on maple, and will have an experienced, knowledgeable answer. It's completely okay if it's not you.

i dont see that as splotchy rather the beautiful grain of the maple is showing. whats not to love about that..there's end cut maple block if you didnt want the gorgeous grain. I'd be really happy with what you have.

What grit did you sand with? Over sanding can close the grain and lead to splotchy finishes. Did you wipe the tung oil off with in forty minutes? Sometimes in my experience tung oil will gel in areas and lead to inconsistent absorption. I had to strip a piece once when it happened to me.

That is Maple and the way Maple take stain. It alwayrs take it s bit uneven and will look blotchy as it is a wood that tends to have multiple grain patterns and density making the stain take uneven.

roarah I sanded with 80, 120, 150, and 220, using an orbital sander. The oil absorbed so quickly, there was nothing left to wipe off. I may contact RMP and see what they suggest. It's not terrible. The day before it was way worse and I had to completely resand and start over.
