Too much leather?

I am trying to figure out what to buy for in front of the sofa and love seat. I almost bought a leather rectangular ottoman but was afraid it might make that side of the room too dark and heavy. I really want something we can put our feet up on. Right now I'm using the ottoman from the one recliner. I want to try and get all the large pieces bought before I start on the drapes, lamps and wall decor. Any suggestions will be most welcome.

OK..... and "I" love leather!!!! but yes, that's too much. A pair of cloth club chairs instead of the replica Eames would be my choice.

I'd look for a brass coffee table with a glass top, but you wouldn't want to rest your feet on it.

I like the idea of a brass and glass table. If you get good heavy plate glass and take your shoes off, you can put your feet up. I had such a table for years.

Would you consider changing the rug to something more contemporary, such as a gold colored frieze? It would brighten up the room and go well with the flooring and leather.

    Beautiful dog!

I like what you have in your room. I have no idea what you can use as a coffee table . . .I agree, no leather, though. It seems like you would need something on the chunkier side to fit with the sofas, but then it might make the room too heavy. Hmmm. I am no help there!

I was trying to think of what would take your room from "very, very nice" to "wow!" The only thing I could come up with, other than changing the accessories, is your wall color. Normally I go for light paint on the walls, but I think a darker brown (not tan-- brown) or even-- call me crazy-- a darker pink/peach similar to what is in your rug, would add to the luxurious look you have. Then I would do (but this is only because it is my style!) some artwork in gold frames like you might imagine in the library of an old estate. I could see some cloisonné lamps in there as well.

The last thing you probably had planned was to paint-- so I would just keep this as an option for years down the road.

How about a big woven wicker or rattan piece with an pillowed top? Then you could use it as a footstool, extra seating and/or a coffee table.

And I agree that paining the walls would make a big difference. As I love paper bag brown, I always vote for that. Or maybe a warm reddish color.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I went and looked at some large leather ottomans and realized when seeing them in person that leather won't work. Our tv is sitting on the coffee table that matches the two end tables, so I could always put it back in use as a coffee table and get something else for the tv. I would love to change out the carpet. I've had it for over 24 years and it is in excellent condition, but I'm tired of it. I'm just not good at this decorating stuff and it takes me forever to decide on something! I like the idea of painting the walls a darker color and it might be a nice winter project for me. I'll be post any changes I make. All suggestions are more than welcome.

If you want to change the rug (I really like it!), then I say wait to paint. You could go in so many directions with the sofas, so better to wait to find a rug that inspires you-- that you just love. Then see how the paint/rug will work together.

I think a glass and metal coffee table would really make your space seem less heavy. As I'm writing this on my laptop my husband and I both have out feet up on a glass coffee table with a metal edge and we've been doing this quite comfortably for the last two and a half years. I too feel that the leather chairs in addition to the sofa and love seat are a bit too much and the color also doesn't quite harmonize, and unfortunately neither does the style. Instead of the beige pillows could you perhaps find more red pillows that have a pattern to add some interest? I love the style of the sofa and love seat and would design the room around them and the rug, if you don't want to replace it. I feel that dark walls would make the room look to somber and would choose a light cream color instead. The lamps by the chairs also don't seem to have quite the right color. Glass bases might be elegant, or a warm color taken from the rug. I hope all of this doesn't sound too critical because it's truly meant to help you make the most of a room that has a lot of potential. Panel drapes would be an elegant look to finish off the room, in a color that's not too dark. Even a pattern in soft colors might be quite pretty.

I was wondering if you could move the Tv to the end wall (behind where the leather chairs are now) along with the cabinet next to it. A taller entertainment center would be nice for a future purchase, to bring some height and break up the horizon effect of all the seating being the same height and the lamps being the same height. You need something taller to put the tv at a good viewing height, and an overall taller cabinet to bring some height to the space.

Then put the two chairs on the wall where the tv is currently. I think it would create a much better balance in the room, so that all the leather furniture isn't in a row on one side of the space.

I would think a fabric ottoman in a rich color would be perfect for the space. As others have said, you don't need more leather, and regular coffee tables aren't designed as footrests. In the alternative, consider having a thick upholstered pad added to the top of the existing coffee table and use that, once you get a new entertainment piece.

I would also like to see you consider some drapery with some pattern and richer colors, to bring some color onto the walls. Larger artwork would be nice as well. It will bring focus to other areas of the room and make the heaviness of the leather less of an issue.
