It didn't turn out at all like what I had in my head.
I drew the shape and hubby cut it out for me.
I used vitreous glass tiles and regular red glass,
and mirror tiles to seperate the colors, they sure don't photograph well!

That's a pretty large piece so I'm wondering two things. What is the substrate - MDF or ?? And how did you secure the mirror to it?

d3bbi, we cut the mirror frame out of 1/2 inch plywood.
I used that E6000 glue you said you used on the birdbaths,
to attach the mirror to the back side. It's on there pretty good!

Yep....it's glued to the back.

Those large swooops plus the unusual outside shape make it quite eye-catching. Placement on that narrow wall also emphasizes those swoops and provides a lovely background to show it off.

I think you have funk you just clutch it so tightly (like me) that you can't see it!!! It is very abstract even if you don't think so. Elegant funk!!!

HAZIE: YOU DID IT!!!!!!! That is soooooo beautiful and very elegant, and yes, you achieved the funk look very nicely. As always, your work is PERFECTION! LOVE everything about it, color, placement and design. I hate cutting vitreous tiles, but yours are beautiful, and those EDGES - MY GOODNESS - wish I could do work that neatly!

Hazie I love it. I think the second picture really showed it off, cause of the edges you did. I do think it is funky looking. If you want to funkify it more then consider adding something on each of the corners, beaded tassels, or wire squiggels sticking out. I really like it as is though. Looks wonderful.

Hazie, that side angle helps to understand how your mirror was applied. I was thinking it was on top of the wood. I love the mirrored tiles on the inset and the mirror accents within the face of your frame. That E6000 sticks, doesn't it?! BEEEEAUUTIFUL!

PERFECTION!!! Now about those 3 little items under it, that are screaming to be mosiaced to match.....

Is there a reason to NOT put the mirror directly onto the substrate? I read in the archives that if it breaks then it's hard to replace. Is this the only reason?

I don't see any reason not to put the mirror on the front.
I didn't because It wasn't the effect I was going for,
and cutting the mirror to that exact shape without messing up the backing with the saw or grinder was something I knew I couldn't do.

Yep. I really like the mirror set back like you've done. Gives the piece more dimension. I like how you did the mirror squares in the lip too.
I took the easy way out when I started my mirror and just glued the mirror to the front. I'm so dissappointed I did.

Thanks Hazie! I have the pieces to put together for a mirror, but am rethinking the front vs. back attcachment thanks to your glamorous piece! Very much like the way the mirrored pieces look around the inside. THe whole piece just works so well! AND I never even thought about cutting the actual mirror-not that I would even try,(at this point in the learning process anyway) but still it's something to ponder. Thanks for sharing. Hope you enjoy your mirror, it's wonderful!!

SF - mirror is just as easy to cut as any other glass. Try it on a cheapie first - it'll surprise you, and you'll say w/glee "Hey, I can DO this"!!! That was my first thing I said when I did. I talk to myself lots during all my projects.
