I used one of those in the 80's! it was a fun project. I just painted it real funky. The thing I didn't like about it, was the bottom was too wide to get chairs close to the table, but other than that, it worked great! Go For It!

I don't know Becky....that's gonna be a BIG project and probably a PITA one, too - especially if you only have the top of the spool. And, I'm not sure if you've used broken dishes that much, but it is a lot of extra effort to get a smooth, level surface, which you would want on a table top.

Here's my "spool" story: A little over 3 years ago, before I started mosaic-ing, my brother in law "acquired" a nice spool for me. My thought was to mosaic it. I ordered a bunch of mosaic tiles on-line. My idea was to do an ocean/fish scene on top, and the bottom of it was going to be the sandy beach. But I decided I needed to start with some smaller projects...and I did...and here I am over 3 years later - and the spool is still sitting there! First, I realized that I couldnÂt have it outside, which was my original plan, but after reading a bunch of mosaic books I learned that mosaicing on wood for outdoors is not recommended. So then I was going to place it on the lanai, but I ended up realizing that there was a lot of prep work to do, and some repair work to the wood (the middle part of it), and it had some big screws sticking up that needed to be filed down, and I decided I didn't want to lay the tesserae directly on the wood on the top - thought it would be better to have it on the concrete backer board, yada, yada, yadaÂ.so like I said, it's still sitting there. I'm not sure I even want to do it now. I think I might do what Hazie did....and just paint it.

When my oldest son was little, I took one (smaller though, maybe 3 ft diameter) and painted it to look like a picnic laid out on a red/white checkered tablecloth. I had a couple little chairs for him and a friend. It was VERY cute. Funny, I just thought of that table recently and wondered what ever became of it. I must have given it away.

Re your project...sounds to me like, with so many other things to mosaic out there, I'd do something else myself. For one thing, it's probably extremely heavy even now. Mosaiced it might be immovable! Too much work fraught with too much risk, for my taste!

I vote for paint too,if you really want it.Too much to mosaic and couldn't use outside anyway...Just too much I think!

Nope, I'd leave it. Too much trouble, too much other stuff to be done!

I vote for leaving it where it sits too. We have a couple of them out back of the shop. My hubby uses them to wash car parts on and just shop stuff. They have been sitting outside for a few years and are starting to come apart.

Another thing to consider is if this was a meth house it is not wise to take anything from it. Meth contaminates stuff. Not sure about how and the where for's and why's. I just know when hasmat came to demeth the house behind us many years ago in another house we had they wore suits and gloves masks.

All good points. I had two stacked up in my first place, as a kitchen table, had bar stools as chairs, was comfy as my feet had a resting place! Ah, to be young and appreciate cardboard boxes as end tables again!!! heh heh!

Yep, got two which I brought home a couple of years ago intending on doing the same thing. One is now outside and both bottom and top are filled with plants in pots being rooted from stem cuttings, and the other is in the basement and is used as anything and everything having to deal with a saw, hammer, screw, etc. Take it from there...

Soooooo, Becky, with all of us saying "Nope, leave it alone,"...Whadja decide to do????

well, I have come to the conclusion that if I can't pick it up and carry it by myself, then it isn't a project that I want to mess with.
and that goes for just about anything in my life, at this moment...even and especially my man!!!

the table top stays, right where it is..
now, whether I want to relocate the guy..that remains to be seen...he can carry himself.
if things don't shape up, then I will be going solo and life could be much less complicated, in short order.

it's been a hellatious past few months and the only thing keeping me sane, is the painting.
I can either go to my instructor's, or paint at home, on my own. it's peaceful, calming and soothing..not to mention a feeling of satisfaction, with every project, being fired.

today I worked on 3 different things.
winter scenes, with snow and chickadees....
I don't have my studio set up now..it was all disassembled, when I thought the kids were going to move back home.
then, I knew that would be a disaster, so they aren't but things are all boxed up and piled along the entire hallway and in the front room..
I need to yet again, set it back up.
gawd!! is there a light at the end of this tunnel??

not to worry..I'm a tough ol' stewing hen and won't be deterred by it all.
it just makes me work harder, for the future I want.
one day...I know I will post here about a place, either on or overlooking the water of Puget Sound..
maybe that's a pipe dream but if I know me...it's more of a premonition to the future.
for now, I just take one day at a time and
I even learned that if I get my bed made in the morning..that's the first accomplishment of the day and to be satisfied with that...
so, I make the bed and try to keep pace with my intentions.

I'm studying the color wheel now...
sure is a lot more to it, if one wants to put special time and effort into it.
I know the color wheel..who doesn't?
but the nitty gritty of it is actually an in depth lesson.

I'm here, at the local library and will be posting again, in a day or so....

thanks for the input and suggestions..I took it to heart and appreciate you seeing that project for what it was....
and thankful you shared the fact that it would be a heavy, and time consuming thing, that wouldn't even be to my liking. I guess I was just looking for something to fill the void of no project at that time.
heck, I have a glass picnic table, with an umbrella..
didn't use it one time this summer, for a picnic....not even one time did I sit out there, to even read a book in the summer evenings..
what was I thinking?????????????
