Stained Glass & Mosaics

Dumb ?? but i have never worked with

China plates or things like that. I have always used glass or marbles or tiles. Well i decide to make a bird bath for my BF sister for christmas. Bought terra cota pots. Yes i will seal them before i do work on them. But my question is i order 4 plates, china plates with dragons and wizards on them. Now can ya please tell me how to cut or break them. I don't want to ruin this project. Tiles i break with a hammer but sure don't want to do that with plates.
