Table Saw Restoration

Not sure where I should post this.

I have my father's old craftsman 100 table saw and I'd like to have someone check it out and restore if necessary. Just the sound of this thing firing up brings tons of great memories of my dad add the smell of the sawdust and he's right here next to me!!!

My question is who would I call? It hasn't been used for more than 20+ years and when I turn it on, it appears to be ok but within minutes starts smoking. Not sure what's making it smoke. This is extremely heavy so I really couldn't take it anywhere for opinions. Any ideas?

I was in my 30's when I told my Dad I'd like to have it. He said No..it's too big for you...go get a newer lightweight one. He finally gave in because I didn't want a saw, I wanted HIS saw. Anyways, fast forward 15 years and I'm now in my 50's and my sister and I decided to redo my kitchen and decided to give the saw a try. We had to laugh as we grabbed the smoke detector when it started smoking...we decided my Dad watching and was trying to say..."It's too big for you, I told you not to use it!!"

Sorry for getting off topic but you can maybe understand why I'd like to save it!!

Thanks in advance!

Visit OWWM.....Old Wood Working Machines.......here's the link to a Craftsman page........Find your model # and find specific manual for your saw or check out the generic "circular saw" and "motor selection" manuals......online as PDF's

All old iron needs lubrication......Remove the belt and try to turn the arbor....does it move freely......is the motor smoking.......

Here is a link that might be useful: OWWM Craftsman

If the saw is smoking, do not run it for more than a few seconds. Parts such as bearings or bushings could be damaged by running the saw. You might simply have an old drive belt that has lost its flexibility-belts need to be replaced every 5 years or so.

Was the motor smoking? Was the belt rubbing somewhere and heating up? Was the smoke coming from the arbor/shaft bearings? Those motors may have oil cups or oiling plugs. That's where you oil them each year or so. If it hasn't been oiled in 30 years it's probably due for a drink.

Thanks alot....I'll look at the link suggested and oil well if that's what it calls for. I'm afraid to let it run at all because I don't want to damage or make anything worse. I'll post back once I oil if needed and maybe look for a new belt. Where would I look for the belt?
I think the smoke was coming more from under the saw as opposed to where the motor is? BUT I'll look at everything I can and I'll hopefully get it where I can give it another try. Thanks again to all!
