More Pillow Talk. . . .

Okay, please don't kill me. I know you are sick of this. I really know this. But I can't make the decision on my own, because I am incapable of editing out stimula. This is why I can't shop in malls: after 30 minutes, I start to feel overwhelmed. So if you will just take a deep breath and bear with me a bit longer, this will soon be over. :)

I have been talking with my3dogs about pillow fabrics. She kindly gave me her suggestions, but said I should ask you guys, too. Here goes. . .

Refresher course:

New pillow on one chair (colors not so bright in real life):

Other chair that needs pillow (rectangular or square?):

Sofa pillows (this rug no longer applies):

Question #1: Should I replace sofa pillows or just leave them as is, or just supplement?

Question #2: Which of the following fabrics for the second chair would best coordinate with the new pillow on the first chair?

Question #3: Any fabrics you see here that would coordinate with current sofa pillows, or as replacements for them?

Fabrics:

1)

2)

3)

Pillow made of this fabric, for sale on ebay:

4)

5)

I think this might be too formal, but:

Oh, I forgot to post a link to these, which I adore. But I am not going to spend $140 on a pillow (and it's not in my budget, anyway). I post it here as a PSA for anyone who might be interested in purchasing them. :)

OK, I'm getting confused. Yea, that's a surprise!! You are keeping this rug? Is it the other one you weren't pleased with? I'm asking so I'll know what pillow I want to recommend. You aren't making this easy for me. You know I don't know much about this decorating stuff and yet you keep confusing me more. LOL

I love number 3, but not sure it goes with the rug.

brutuses: The red rug is the rug that is staying. :)

    Thank you.

The tufted back chair gets no pillow, please. The beauty of that chair is in the back, and a pillow hides that. Every seat in the room doesn't have to have a pillow. If you want to bring some color there, get a nubby chenille throw and fold it over one arm of the chair.

Many of the fabrics that you have chosen are wonderful, but I think the repeat of the design is too large for some small couch pillows. I would also prefer blue to red, please. You have enough red in the space between the rug, the fireplace and the other pillow. How about the coat of arms in the blue, instead of in the red as you have it? It has little touches of red, and the gold fleur de lis compliments the curves of the existing couch pillows. These blue ones would go behind.

    coat of arms, blue

For your channel-back chair, I would do a lumbar pillow like you have. Only, do they make them smaller? I think Les stated that nothing would be needed there because of the detail, and I agree. How about a tapestry type cloth or small throw folded on one of the arms, for added color, instead?

I'm a little confused, too. You keep picking red tones, which I love, but you were having such a hard time living with different reds (in the case of the rug). Are you able to see these fabrics in person?
Have you decided that blues or greens aren't what you would like to use?

To start, I would just get covers for the pillows that came with the couch in a color/pattern that compliments your William Morris's'ss's's :)

les: *sob* Okay. No pillow on the channelback chair. It just looks so empty next to everything else! Not even #1, 8, or 10? So the blue fleur-de-lis should go behind the William Morris pillows currently on my sofa?

alex: Yes, I keep picking red tones. Frankly, I'm so confused at this point I don't know what I want.

P.S. A little HD birdie has offered to make my pillows. :) I have to come up with something cool to do for her in return.

My favorite fabrics are #2 and #7, however, with all the large patterns you have now, you'll eventually need something smaller to balance them out.

The bosperous is very nice and the rug is so special in that room, I don't know if you need anything more of a serious nature (which to me is anything with people, animals or a realistic scene) in there.

You might also consider leaving one of the chairs unadorned and double up on pillows on the sofa, two with a blue texture, grid etc. (or keep your white) and then two of whatever fabric you like.

Did you get any bites on the other rug?

    Thanks, parma.

A couple of people contacted me about the rug, but for both, it was "too big."
It's still sitting rolled-up in my study. :(

Oh boy, you're really going to hate me now, but I just saw Les's post after I sent mine...then saw you had someone to make pillows for you...remember the Bosperous that Les showed you along with the different colored fringe?

It would be tres cool to have someone make all the pillows at the same time to coordinate with each other. The fringe that Les had, that just had touches of the red in it along with other colors, would be so perfect on the pillow you just bought.

Don't suppose you would entertain the idea of tweaking it a bit and changing out the border? OK, you can hit me now.

OSH, do you own a red towel or sweater or shirt, and the same thing in a navy? Just wrap those around your existing couch pillows (the white ones) and try each behind the Wm Morris pillows. See which feels right. It may not be an exact match for a fabric that you would buy, but it will give you a visual of which color family works better for you. You might even take a pix of each one, so you see it through a different 'eye'.

Is the Bosporous pillow solid red fabric on the back? You could even try that behind the Morris pillow, just for an idea of the red.

Sorry about the other chair - of course you should do what you want, but I think a nice throw folded over one arm will do more there than a pillow. Something like this is wonderful, but uber expensive:

    wool tapestry throw

If you have a Hobby Lobby nearby, check out their tapestry throws. If you watch for sales, you can regularly get them at 50% off, and at the end of season they mark down even more.

I agree with Les about a throw instead of a pillow but I really do love needlepoint pillows with some blues and a hint of red in them.

Check out this trim on eBay. I looked at the other Pillow Fun post to see the brush trim that Les had recommended. It's beautiful, but $17.95 a yard. You'd need 2 yards to do an 18" sq. pillow.

This piece has blues, red and tans in it, and may go with some of the fabrics you're looking at. It's $14.95 (or best offer) for 10 yards. I looked at the Bosporous fabric and it looks like it may go great with it, if you wanted more pillows from that. The best price I saw on eBay for the fabric was $14.99 yd.

les: Here are some photos (below) of the closest thing I could come up with. The red pillow is really more of a coral--it's a Peacock Alley pillow (I got a pair for super-cheap on ebay, but they've been in my closet).

The bosporus pillow has the same fabric on the reverse.

Thanks for a link to the tapestry throw, les. I'm confused about why a throw is preferable to a pillow, because the arms aren't that big and a throw, even folded, would end up draping across the seat or even the floor, right?

my3dogs: Are you saying that I should perhaps to a bosporus pillow (or two) for the sofa, as well? That trim is beautiful!

There's also this pillow (Croscill--a cheapie, but whatever)--front and back:

    Also,

Are you people as tired of her pillow saga as I am???

If you were to use something on the tufted chair, maybe something smaller than what's on there. How about a lightweight shawl, with fringe, just draped over the arm. Good dog nest, lol.

Anyway, I love the sofa pillows and don't see why you need to replace them. The colors and pattern seems to look nice with everything else. All pillows don't have to be a print, either. You've got three printed ones already, along with a patterned rug. Maybe fringe, trim, or texture/weave could be the interest point on another pillow. Now, I do love tapestries, though, lol. That #6 looks a bit different than the other pillows. Then, the colors look pretty strong, too.

Parma: I forgot to say: I've also gotten many scammer responses on it--every day. I've posted that damn rug 2x/day for a week. I think I'm going to give up on it. It's going into the basement, and if it gets ruined by mildew--well, nothing I can do about it. Live and learn, I guess.

You have great taste-- those fabrics are great! I really like 1 and 2-- and I'd absolutely have to find something cool to do with the elephants! Unfortunately, I think the pattern might be too big/busy on all of them. I really like the blues with the w. morris pillows and the rest of the room.. can you get a sample or two to try? I'd be sad to see the current pillows go-- I think they look great.

I absolutely understand what Les is saying about the pillow on the channel back chair but I'd put a long narrow lumbar pillow there. I think it needs something and the throw idea just isn't working for me-- I like the lines of the arms too much to cover them.

Your room is so beautiful and inviting... it just keeps getting better!

funky: I'm thinking the same as you: a lumbar pillow for the other chair. Perhaps #1, 8 or 10? Maybe les will accept this as a compromise? :) As for the sofa pillows, I think I will keep them. Maybe, for now, I won't add anything, because I like the fabric on the pillows behind them, which is the same fabric as the sofa.

    Thanks!

If you're willing to let the rug get ruined by mildew, why not lower the price, or give it away?

The pillows you already have on the sofa look good to me. The new pillow on the chair looks fine. Do you really need something on the other chair?

Maybe you can't decide because you really want a whole lot of different pillows. If so, then maybe you should have them. Keep a few in the room, put the rest in the closet, and just change them out every now and then.

I like each of those a lot.. and the light backgrounds should work well. My fear, though, is that the scale is too big to showcase the beautiful patterns. It's kind of like "white space" around important information in a document-- space around the central pattern will make it stand out. Not enough space will make it look cramped and uncomfortable. Does the web site list the numbe of inches for the pattern repeat?

I really wish you could use the elephants! They are enchanting.. but I honestly don't see them in your room.

If the scale works, I am leaning towards 8. It isn't a pattern I'd typically choose but it's the one I keep coming back to for your room.

wooderlander: My dh just told me a little while ago that he thinks he can fit the rug in his closet, so we shall see. . . :) As for the pillows, since I'm so indecisive, there's the risk that I'll impulsively just decide, or decide on too many--just to get it over with. So I'm trying to slow down with this one.

funky: The one you chose--#8-- is exactly the one that my3dogs chose for that chair. Here's the link to #1 (which might be the same fabric as #10, I'll have to check). There are some numbers written on the description, but I don't begin to know how to interpret them.

I wondered if they were the same.. but my eyes are tired and I wasn't going to try to figure it out. :)

From the link: h:13.5 v:18, uproll
horizontal repeat is 13.5".. I'd think that would be ok.
vertical repeat is 18".. That's not going to work nicely for you.

I don't know what uproll means.

Thank you for the information, funkyart. So I guess that means that the pattern is 13.5" wide and 18" high? And if so, that means I need to purchase material with a tiny print?

Back to the drawing board. . . .

Well.. not sure "tiny" but not that one. :(

    unless...

I suppose you could center the birds/horse and cut off the top and bottom of the framing pattern. I can't picture how that will look without seeing the full vertical pattern. Is my3dogs familiar with this fabric? She's made way more pillows than I have (which is NONE) so I'd trust her eye.

You really have a great eye for fabrics. I love the one you picked out for Joan's chair too.

I just hopped on this post to see what it was all about and your fabric choices are wonderful, as is your room. However, IMO, with an ivory sofa, there should be more ivory in any pillow fabric you choose. Again, IMO, the pillows will take center stage, and everything else in the room will get lost.

I think a blending of sorts, like the pillow on the chair in the first picture(ivory background), would look nice, and not so overpowering.

You also might want to think about changing the lamp shade to give the lamp a more updated look. If you decide to use a pillow fabric with red, I would opt for a red shade.

Good luck with your choice of fabric.

I know how excited OSH is, because I get that way when on a decor quest! I was looking at her fabric site this AM, and saw this, Do we have thoughts on this blue to go on the couch with her Morris Pillows? I see it with a self-covered cording in the same fabric as the edge trim.

I have an offer in on that trim I showed above. It's too good to pass up! It'll go with so many fabrics that it's good to have on hand. I'll make sure that OSH gets some, if it works with any of her fabric choices.

I don't know if stripes are way off base for the look you're going for, but they are versatile. You could probably move them around the house seasonally or if you just want a different look. These look nice with the WM pillows...or am I just adding to the confusion? :)

alex: Thank you. I thought about stripes, too, but then I thought--lord, there are so many patterns in their already, I better keep it subtle! :)

In fact, the pillow dilemma has been solved--many, many thanks to all of you for your patience in dealing with my neuroses.

My "little HD birdie" is making pillows for me, from fabric that she has suggested and which I LOVE. Can you guess who it is? LOL

You could just get your husband to dye his beard, and get the dog to match. Barring that, I think you need a bigger graphic and more textures. Needlepoint? Bargello? You don't have to do it yourself--I see finished ones on Ebay all the time. More small patterns just contribute to the slight claustrophobic sensation.

I love the red rug and your furniture, but you've got a lot of white/cream tones. Are you planning on some art over the sofa?

I really like the chalet matelasse.. is this the fabric you have chosen? Is there another for the channel back chair? Are you going to keep us in suspense until the final reveal??

Your little HD birdie has guided you well.. She is a saint!

I am a little late in this conversation, but I like #9, (for the couch) then I would add a solid golden tone pillow to accent. I am not a fan of blue, I love the golds and reds. I am assuming you are doing away with the cream matching sofa pillows, that is why I suggested the pattern and a solid. I also agree that every chair does not need a pillow and a throw would soften up the chair.

ideefixe: Yes, I'm planning on some art over the sofa. Sometime in the fall, I will have my Herbert Dicksee terrier print reframed, I think, and use it as the centerpiece for that wall, with smaller prints/painting on either side. I think that will work. :)

funkyart: I like that matelasse, too--but my "saint" has her own fabric and we've selected from among them. :)

Hmmm. I don't know about waiting until the "reveal." If somebody guesses correctly, I will confirm!

gk5040: No, I'm not doing away with the cream matching sofa pillows--I love the fabric too much! I like #9, too--very much--but unless I use it for the chair, there's really nowhere to put it. The problem with using a throw for the chair is that it would end up covering some of the chair--and be an invitation for play to my cat. :)

What a relief, I thought she might be offering her services :)
You are in good hands. I love her style.

I can't wait to see the end products!

I meant waiting to the reveal to see the fabrics you've chosen. I am assuming the lovely my3dogs is your saint ;)

funkyart: We have a WINNER!!! (Although I suspect Alex knew, too). Isn't she just the best???
