Faux painting can be done well, but that entails a professional.

If you would like to try something, I think the linen look is very nice and can look like rich wallpaper. The plaster treatment is lovely but EXPENSIVE.

If I were you, I'd wait to see everything together before embarking on that project. You may get that textural element from drapery or rugs.

A picture would be helpful. Your walls may not need anything else but accessorizing, with pictures, sconces, buffet lamps, etc.

But if you want, there is wallpaper too...it can look like faux painting or not.

I've seen stripes done to interesting effect by making the stripes out of a clear gloss, so the color is the same but the shininess is different.
