I really don't know of a way to solve your problem. My wife's quilting/cutting table has fold down tops and swing out leg supports.

That size is too large for folding legs, IMHO. The only option I think would work is the bracket type folding legs that attach to each end and fold to the middle---see the link.

Thanks, Handymac and Casey, for your responses. Handymac, because the table is only going to be 48" long, those folding legs won't both be able to fold flat but I appreciate you fiding them for me. Casey, I think the plans you sent will work, altho' I will make the table with only one side. Thanks again to both of you for helping me out.

Often those folding legs are attached in a way that means one nests under the other--so they fold *flat*, but the whole table is a little thicker.

There are height-adjustable ones, but they are expensive.

I think you should be OK w/ a brace about midway up the leg
(essentially turn it into a wooden version of the table legs handymac found).

I'm assuming you have one pair of legs that's mounted wider than the other, so when they fold, one set nests inside the opposite legs. You can put the brace between the inner pair of legs so that it's flush with the legs (these legs fold in first). On the wider pair of legs (which fold in last), put the brace so it's on the outside of the legs (it'll rest on top of the inner legs; the whole table will be a tiny bit thicker, depending on what you use as a brace; maybe you can find a flat but really stiff strip of steel).

That would be what I'd start with.
