Perhaps if you accuratly describe what you have in mind, your local hardware has it or will order it. From your above discription,I wouldn't recconize them even I had a dozen in my hand.

Yes, I meant sex bolts, not bolds. I must have made a typo and autocorrect changed it to bold. The more decorative ones I've seen on a finished product were slightly smaller in center and flared on each end.

That's called a truss head breakaway screw, and is readily available at any decent hardware store. The part it threads into has various names including cabinet knob standoff, cabinet knob base, cabinet knob stem, etc. My first suggestion would be to try Rockler.com: they have a lot of hard-to-find cabinet hardware, and it's usually better to call their 800 number (or your local store if you have one) than to try to search their online catalog.

I once needed a couple of those and went to Home Depot. I bought some really cheapo knobs that came with the screw and stem, and just tossed the knob and used the hardware.

Also, try to Google some of those terms. Below is one I found on eBay.
