need custom dining table top

I have a large oval double pedestal table. The top is veneer and not in good shape but I love the heavy pedestals and the rest of the base. It also has 2 large leaves. I’m having trouble finding someone who will make me a solid wood table top and leaves. All the existing hardware underneath the table and on the leaves is in excellent shape and can be reused if necessary. I’m in CT.

Any moderatly experinced woodworker can refurbish existing top. Depending on what damage veneer has, it might be salvagable.. If veneer is beyound help, new veneer can easily be overlaid. Look for a store that caters to hobbiest woodworkers, they can usually reccomend people interested in doing this type work. Also check with hardwood supply outlets.

We’ve already discussed with some woodworkers. Veneer is beyond help and replacing veneer is $$$$ …. way more than a new solid wood table. I will check hardwood supply outlets though for recommendations. Thank you. Was hoping to find an interested party here.

The dining table/chairs are from the glazing era. Which is fine, as long as you like the look. IMO, trying to replace the wood look top is very dated. I would keep everything as is and paint the top/leaves in the dark glaze accent color.

An experienced furniture restorer/painter can do it by removing the veneer from table top and leaves and

    • Separating the two leaves from the main table.
    • Placcing all three pieces flat on sawhorses in a well-ventilated area.
    • Painting all pieces in the exact same environment at the same time to ensure the color, texture, and sheen match perfectly.

How do you know veneer is way more expensive than solid wood if you haven't been able to find anyone that can build a solid wood top? Were I still doing proects for hire I'd love to veneer that table for same price as cheapest soild wood you can find. I could easily do it in half the time at half the material cost as solid which means my profit would be over the top.

You might look on sites like Facebook Marketplace or consignment shops to see if you can find a table that has a top that you could use with your base
