Over my head

I just got beautiful new wood floors, and knew that I wanted the same floor in my DR, den and LR, for cohesiveness. But now I am trying to decorate the individual rooms and am clueless. I made heavy weight, but light colored drapes for the one window in the living room -which look good against the paneled wood. The same fabric looks blah against the cream walls of the den though. So at the fabric store I fell in love with the wild tapestry like fabric and bought enough to make valances for the den, and pillows for the living room. Now I'm chickening out. I wanted it because thought my house needed some "fun" but, maybe it is too wild for my more traditional house. Also, it is adjacent to my yellow kitchen that has white cotton curtains with a black print. I don't want all the rooms in my house to look the same, and I like color, but also don't want people to come in and say "What was she thinking!" Obviously, it wouldn't match the LR curtains. I'm open to all suggestions. Here are a couple of pics. Thanks, http://s1191.photobucket.com/albums/z468/musicteacher1/over%20my%20head/

Forgot to add that I will make the valances wider and higher, and am considering plain colored curtains below, or maybe match stick blinds instead of the mini blinds.

Here you go, mt. Your fabric is linked below.

I love your tapestry pattern! IMO every house needs a bit of whimsy.

Here is a link that might be useful:

Would you consider panels in place of valances? There is nothing wrong with valances, but current fashion seems have moved away from valances in favor of panels, except in certain circumstances.

Without a sense of what the sight lines are like in your house, it is impossible to know whether the window treatments will clash with one another. You write that the den is adjacent to the kitchen, but as you walk around your house, do you frequently view the kitchen window at the same time as you view the den window?

I like your bird tapestry fabric!

Love it! I think you should do it!

Congrats on your new floors they are beautiful! Has it helped to lightened up your living room? I like your fabric choice it is fun yet still traditional! Go for it! Can not wait to see your your after pics!

Oh, I love the birds! They add just the right touch of whimsey!

People will come in and say, "Ah... I wish I had her artistic vision!"

I love that fabric too! If I'd seen it I would have bought it and figured out where to use it later : ) I agree re valances, though, and fabric that fabulous really deserves full length display.

Would you be able to post a pic of the window and the view into the kitchen with the curtains in there? It would really help folks understand what degree of 'adjacent' you're dealing with. Only if you can see the two windows in the same plane does it matter, and it's possible that they may go together anyway...

And don't despair entirely -- you can always choose a simpler fabric for curtains and use the bird fabric for pillows. Those birds deserve to have a place in your home : )

Love your fabric choice. Is there any reason you can't choose a paint color from the colors in that fabric and repaint the white room? If it were me, (and I am usually inspired by the very thing you've found for drapes), I would repaint the room to suit the fabric (inspiration). JMHO. Then again, I am not a fan of beige and white painted walls, so to pick a complentary paint color out of your fabric would be no problem for me. lol

    The fabric is great!

You have gotten past the hard part for so many, which is an inspiration piece for the room. As work said, pull paint color from the fabric.

I agree with the others in that the repeat on the fabric is probably too large for valances. You may end up with a valance of mostly headless birds!

Don't chicken out! I think the fabric is really cute. I agree about the valence though and would go with drapes or a Roman shade if you want to see the pattern. I think you could also go with a little larger pillow too. I also agree about changing the wall color. It's not doing anything for your sofa or the new fabric. If I were you, I would find a Benjamin Moore store that sells those larger samples of some of their paints. The samples are 18"x18" and really great to get an idea of a paint color. I think the samples are $4 or something, but you don't have to buy them or the paint. It's just to get an idea of colors that might work in your room. Bring your fabric and pillows from your furniture and just pull out color samples from the rack to see what works with all your fabric. I love those large samples because you can move them around your room and you don't have blotches of paint all over the place.

I'd use the non-birds for the wt and keep the birds for a pillow or table runner.
I don't think either one would look great adjacent to a yellow wall with white & black unless the yellow was a real gold one. I also do not care for it against the white wall. It makes the fabric look dingy there.

Oh man, I love birds and whimsy so that fabric to me is perfection! I vote to stick with your original idea to be a little different and fun, give it a try and see.

Thanks for all your input. I did consider drapes of the fabric but they would cost a fortune. This fabric is $35 a yard, and I would need about 10 yards - WAY out of my budget!. Also, then they would be all scrunched up and you couldn't see the pattern. I like the idea of pulling a paint color from the fabric.....
