I have done it with muriatic acid. The backing needs to be removed, which is generally just black or maroon paint. Stripeze will pull the pain right off but won't touch the silvering.

I really haven't seen anything that will work like the muriatic acid. I don't think bleach is that effective. I stripped the pieces completely so I covered the whole back with muriatic acid, but if you are antique you could mist or spray droplets on the mirror.

Muriatic acid is kind of nasty, it smokes when you open the bottle, and I think I burnt my nasal passages a bit using it. Wear heavy neoprene gloves, goggles maybe a mask with filters.

I have seen it faked with black paint on the front, but then I wonder if this comes off as you clean the mirror

I was taking all the silver off so I could back-paint.

If you are going for spotted, I would practice on old or cheap pieces of mirror.
