Does this mirror work here?

OK. So I know it's so hard to put it all into perspective when you're given only a small photo....

I don't have drapes yet (clearly!)...and took a pic of the adjacent walls to give you an idea....the photos above the sofa look so much smaller in the pic...they aren't that out of balance in person....There isn't A LOT going on in the room, and I'd like to keep it that way....I am HATING to put even one nail hole into a wall that was such a pain to paint....

I love this mirror.....Do you think it would look ok there? Is it too girly?

Before I found new lamps, etc...

While I'm at it...what the heck do I do with drapes? Do tall drapery panels on all four corner windows? I was thinking do long panels on the windows by the to be mirror...and do valances on the other four...and long ones by the patio door (seen in last pic)...

What a great room! You've done a stellar job of decorating!
I like the mirror and no, I don't find it feminine, but it could be a bit small for the space and do you really want two mirrors in the same room? Perhaps since the frame is so decorative, you can use it as wall art until something better (if ever) comes along.
    I really like your space!

I like the mirror there! I think it's a nice counterpart to the larger pieces on your walls. And no, I don't think it's too feminine at all. As for draperies, I like the idea of tall (to the ceiling) panels on all of your windows. I think that would give a nice cohesive look to your very chic, sophisticated space.

The mirror is great...but much too small for the space...
Why do you need draperies?? it's wonderful just as it is with the blinds.

Thanks guys! I'm really a decorating moron, so this space kind of developed on it's own...

Does this give a better idea...clearly not black ones LOL...

    I don't know why I thought I needed drapes...I just thought I needed something...?

I was thinking clean matching short valances on the two windows by the wall unit bc I was worried it would look too cluttered...I could then do matching long ones on the patio doors? ugh. This is the worse part for me...

Honestly, I would hang drapes/valances first, then think about the artwork. I love your mirror as well, and no, it is not too girly. The art over the fireplace seems a little big and is hiding the gorgeous molding. Is it too big for between the widows or where the larger mirror is to the left?

I love the lucite chairs you have. Very nice room too. I also think the mirror is a little small for that spot. But, if you were going to put panels on those windows, it would look nice and clean without the mirror on that spot at all.

Just my 2c... I am not an expert at all.

I LOVE the various items in your room, especially the table lamps, as well as the mirror. But first things first. Get the window treatments up and then decide if the mirror works there. In real life, panels would probably be wider than you have drawn in.

Any thought to lowering the three photos above the sofa? To my eye, they need to be grounded more by being closer to the sofa.

May I ask where you bought the art piece on the mantle?

I love the clean lines and serene color palate you have. Do you really need drapes? I love the way it looks now. Any kind of dark drapes are going to chop up the space visually.

What about floor length white crushed sheers?

I think the mirror will work there whether you have drapes or not. I would then like to see how the area looks if you place the vase of stems under the mirror. If that doesn't look good, consider a small table there instead.
Since there is nothing on that side of the room to balance the furniture I think drapes will look nice. Just be careful of the texture you choose so they don't clash the furniture.

LOVE the canvas over the fireplace and would try hanging it so that it just covers the top edge of the center panel.

Have you tried pulling the wingback chair in the corner out a little and then placing the floor lamp behind it? Place it so the lighting portion comes across to one side of the chair.
May not work but I'm curious! ;) Where it is now just seems to take the focus away from the fireplace.

If this is your home and you plan to stay there awhile, I would also suggest painting the brass on the fireplace surround black so that it goes better with your decor.

Sorry.....I kinda got off topic there!

Thanks so much for the comments and compliments guys!!!! I will definitely play around and see what turns up....

Definitely doing to get a new fireplace surround...so much to do...so much time LOL...we moved in only back in April....And definitely need a new lamp...that one just doesn't raise any more so that if it's behind the chair, it will be so low and set your hair on fire LOL...like anyone every sits there anyway...

The drapes I did get for CHEAP ($40 for 2, 94 length panels) at home goods are a faux silk off white that almost match the color of the walls...I got another set in brown so that I could sew on a brown stripe to the bottom of the drape...I was really liking oil rubbed bronze rods believe it or not...I thought the dark would provide nice contrast since I'm always mixing finishes....

Gray- haha! Those lamps are actually from Target..they were $35 bucks each...I double stick taped brown ribbon to the shades! They may still have them...And the print is from Ballard Designs...I KNOW they still have it and think it's on sale...it's got more green in person...I know it's a little big for the space, but OH, how I love looking at it each day from the kitchen!

You guys rock! Ewww, did I just say that? :)

Here's the alternate view- left side of the space looking from the kitchen, cruddy pic as usual...I need something right next to that chair. I can't stand it. Actually, that entire space is rather useless and I can't figure it out....the room is really long with the entertainment unit to the right half of the room centered bw two windows...We actually have wiring for the TV behing the print, but long story short, sofa doesn't work there....

Do you guys see maybe a tall lamp with a brown shade by the chair?

couldn't resist...here is the before....was two rooms with no wood in the left space! Ewww! Oh, forgot to mention the yellow oak 80s wet bar! Sweet! LOL

You are definitely NOT a decorating moron. I love your taste and the lucite chairs are great!

What about an alternative furniture arrangement? I would try the two matching upholstered chairs together to the right of the TV unit (looking in and in front of the windows) with that cute zebra table between them. Use the standing lamp behind the table to illuminate that area. Then, move the upholstered chair in the corner into the conversation area taking the place of the chair that is now on the left of the sofa.

I think finding a glass table or a lucite table to pair with the chairs in front of the fireplace would be cool. Something light feeling, anyway. You'll be able to see through them to the fireplace when you have a fire going. Make the table large enough (and tall enough) to pull up to for a game or drinks. Also, I would take the pillows off of the lucite. Leave them clean.

I would love to see a case piece under the large mirror. It would help ground that area and provide storage. I don't know, would mirrored be overkill? I like the idea of a lot of reflection going on there.

I don't think your print is too large for the fireplace. I like art that is a little overscaled for the space. It adds even more presence to the piece. I would move the candlesticks together on one side, though.

Are you a plant person? Some nice tall, structured ones would be great in one or two corners.

Love the tones in your room. You might want to try the small mirror over the fire place with the candles to one side and see how it looks, it might be too small there but no harm trying. Maybe lean it to one side on the mantle. Maybe move the large print to over the sofa. I think drapes would be nice and help soften the look of the windows.

I LOVE your sofa. Where'd you get it? I've been looking at a similar one from Crate and Barrel, but haven't seen it in person. Are the arms high enough that you can recline against them with a pillow? I love to lounge on the couch with my laptop on my lap and worry that that style arm would be too low for any back support.

OMG. So many amazing ideas I can't mention each one bc my brain is going to explode!!!, but for real guys, thanks sooo much! I'll post pix of updates!

Thanks Justus....Don't go to C&B. Overpriced and from what I hear average quality. The sofa is by Lee Industries...in Flanders Khaki (fake heavy duty velvet)....I looked FOREVER for it...It's SSSSUUUUPPPPPERRRR confie...yes, you can lean back and put your arms on the arms LOL....They are just about the perfect height and position...the whole thing is so comfie..even my husband's friend with that typical cheezie single guy sofa said so...I love the flat back bc it doesn't get worn...I can always replace the bottom cushions if need be....It's still on the their web site. Lee gets some of the BEST reviews....I went to fancy fancy plances to see it and then got it by calling Fay at Alan Ferguson (no web site, just google them)...I saved a fortune...I hear others like them for Lee as well!

    It's sofa 3057.
They have some variations of it too!

I don't know how you use the space, or how many you need to seat, but I see an serious imbalance in the room. It feels as if most of the substantial pieces, the large upholstered or heavy wood items, are all at one end of the space, and the other end has all the light, small, leggy things. Also, all the seating, except for the one upholstered chair to the left of the fireplace, face in the same direction.

I would love to see the couch and tv stay where they are. Move out the two upholstered chairs on either side of the couch. Take the two ghost chairs and put them at the end of the room, where you are considering hanging the small mirror. Use the zebra table between them. I would leave the space between the windows blank for now, as I think when you get panels there you won't need anything.

I would use the large rectangular mirror that is on the wall left of the fireplace, turned horizontally and hung above the couch. The three pix you have there are too small, and hung too high.

Take the upholstered chair that is now on the left of the fireplace, and put that on the other side of the couch.

Now, take the two upholstered chairs that were by the couch and put them by the fireplace, but flanking the fireplace on each side, facing outward, rather than looking at the fireplace. Use the floor lamp on the left side chair, kind of behind it toward the corner a bit.

Take the three small pix and hang those vertically on the wall where the large mirror hung before.

Take the two candlesticks on the mantel and use them grouped together, not separated. Because they are different heights, the should be used as a pair. Also, because the candleholders themselves are different heights, the candles should be the same height, not two different heights. Rule of thumb is candleholders are the same height, candles can be two different heights for interest -- candleholders two different heights, candles the same height for some continuity.

Then take the small vase from the hearth and use that on the right side of the painting, now that the candlesticks are paired on the left. Add some twigs in the vase, to echo the twigs in the art.

You have a wonderful space, and lots of great items. Have fun pulling it all together.

You have done an excellent job on your choices! I wondered, right away, if that was a Lee sofa. I've always been impressed with their lines but didn't like the shopping experience at C & B so I gave up on getting one.

Without addressing a major furniture shift (I'm neither for nor against), my thoughts pretty much echo those of annz.

I think that some panels on the windows would look nice and add weight to that side of the room. With those in place, the mirror wouldn't look too small.

Painting the surround black (not nickel), would really 'seal the deal'. If you wanted to change out the small prints over the sofa, at a later date, you have a lot of other wall space that you could stack them vertically.

I really like your larger mirror where it is now. It brings so much sparkle to that corner.

Hope you can try Les's suggetions. I can't wait to see how it looks!

Head spinning...in a good way LOL....WOW! That's a lot of awesome advice! I totally apreciate it....Unfortunately, the problem is how we live in the space....the big chairs just have to stay which is the problem..and I can't shift them at all bc husband wants nothing, says nothing...BUT his chair has to stay in that spot LOL......well, at least the one closer to the fireplace does...that is hubby's spot and is the most comfortable spot in the whole place...the TV can't move bc there are two windows flanking it and then the fireplace is immediately to the left of that...

I pondered moving the entertainment center over to the left to actually cover the window entirely (along with something over it to cover the window)...THEN, we could shift everything to the left towards the fireplace and rearrange...

    Thanks again to all!

I was thinking a very very dark bronze or silver for the fireplace surround...who knows...I can't even commit to drapes LOL

guys...last question..if I do drapes, they'll be light ivory....should I do chrome or bronze drapery rods...keep in mind that the wood tones are dark, there is a bronze kitchen fixture in the other room....but that I've mixed in a brushed nickel ceiling fan and lots of chrome accents....

    THANKS!
