I updated our bedroom several months ago. The only place I have for the bed is against a window. I made the draperies wider than the width of the bed. In the before, it was like the window was squished behind the bed. I am assuming the shades just cover the window - so you might want to consider drapery panels on either side to widen the look.

I don't have a pic because the bed isn't in place, but I thought I'd share an idea with you.

I'm putting my bed in a bay window. I have to use some shades for privacy, but don't want them to be too harsh looking. So what I plan is to do the shade, but do a soft valance (handkerchief drape) over the top of the windows so that the shades won't show when pulled up. On a square window (flat one wall) you could easily leave your current shades, but add a valance and two panels, one on each side that are stationary behind your bedside tables. If you keep the panels hiding the edge of the window, you can go as wide on each side as you want, so you can use the bed as your guide for width. This way it looks like your window is as wide as the bed.

I also did a bed in Texas with a very sheer drape. The window was above the headboard height (skinny and short but wide). I draped sheers from one side to the other behind the headboard. It softened the look very well, but still allowed the light in.

Thanks no-green-thumb and igloochic for your help. No-green-thumb that window treatment looks lovely and really does the trick!

Igloochic, you hit the nail on the head with the shade problem. It is an outside mount and, to put it nicely, really ugly! I was considering a sheer drape over the window area to conceal that functional but ugly shade with very simple non-functioning panels on either side to expand the width.

A pretty valance would solve the problem much better.

Thanks again!
