Help Finish Office/Dining Room

Hi - I could use some help finishing my space. It is an office and reading area and once a year we will use it as a dining room. The desk coverts into a table and we store extra chairs and leaves downstairs. We will move the chair and ottoman into another room when we use it as a dining room. I am in need of ideas for drapes, a chandelier, wall art, lamp, end table, and any other advice you may have. The picture above the buffet will be changed to a giclee print and non-glare glass. Do you think the current desk chair would work if I updated the seat cushion? I love botanical prints (leaves, birds) but what color frames? Or maybe a wall gallery with simple frames from crate and barrel? Thank you!

View of reading chair and adjoining foyer. I am not in love with the foyer light fixture but it may stay for a while.

Picture we would like to use. We will hang it up on wall. What do you think? We will be updating print to giclee and maybe change matting to a white instead of linen and take out the blue and gold matts.

    What drapes would you recommend?

Are you married to the desk/ table that you currently have?

How often would you use it as a desk?

How many people would it seat as a table?

How many people would you typically need to seat?

Would you consider an actual rectangular dining table used as a desk except for the few time that you entertain in the DR?
I love actual tables as desks if you can manage the space. I am currently using an old enamel topped kitchen table as a desk/ arts & crafts table. So far it's working well.

Do you have a fair amount of books? Maybe you could get some bookcases and line a wall w/ them like a library. I've seen lots of really nice library/ DR!

I think that the picture looks lovely w/ your wall color but w/o anything balancing out the weight of the chest of drawers below, it looks out of proportion.

Thank you for your ideas! I am married to desk/table and it would be used as a desk everyday. I have had a dining room table for several years and it only gets used once a year to seat 6 - 8. A table for 4 would be great if I had more space and got rid of chair ottamon but I really would like to try a reading chair in here. If I could find space for books that would be great! My space is only 11 x 11 though. I use the buffet for office supplies so I would like to keep it also. Do you think placing accessories on the buffet would balance out picture or is the picture just too big for the space?

It looks like a pretty formal room so I think that a pair of buffet lamps on either side of the picture would balance the scale quite well and would help illuminate the room too. I'd make sure that they are buffet or candlestick lamps and not regular table lamps. Look for tall and thin.

I love the blue and the mustard/browns in the chair.

I think the white wood trim clashes, so I'd paint them and the ceiling, i.e.: get rid of white in that room. I'd paint the trim a mustard like in the chair and the ceiling either the blue at 50% or the mustard at 50%.

Personally, I'd also add crown moulding (painted the mustard).

Some weighted ivory panels on the window.

ix-nay the oob-light-bay. Put in something like this:

Wow....loving these ideas! Tibbrix, you nailed it with the light fixture. That is my taste and suits the room beautifully! Is there a name to describe it so I can google it?

The stark white trim is jarring. You could also consider a cream to lessen the starkness if you want to keep some cohesion trim wise from room to room. Maybe even use the foyer wall color as the trim color in the blue room. Against that dark blue color cream (or colors darker than) will read lighter but not be so stark.

kelly, very odd. I cannot find that chandy now! It's not on the page where I found it!

I'll keep looking, but I'm stumped.

    There's also something like this:

Here is a link that might be useful: Mini chandy

I agree the trim should be darker

Thanks so much for taking the time to find it

yw, kelly. Meant to also suggest that, if you do put a new chandy in, you have it put on a dimmer.

Thanks nosoccermom. Those drapes are beautiful and love the price.

I would style the buffet similar to the table in nosoccermoms post. In fact, use that entire blog, for the love of a house, as inspiration. Then use a screen o
In the window corner, to cover the printer and any other office stuff, and use a tall mirror on the other side of the desk to reflect light from the entry hall. I know that leaves over the desk blank, but you will need some light there too, and office stuff, that may do it.

Springroz, thank you. For the love of house blog has alot of ideas that are my taste. If I use the mirror to the side of the desk, what should I put over the foyer table? Would another mirror there be too many mirrors?
