Project reveal

Recently finished our master bath remodel. I don't usually post photos online, but between planning, bids & construction it took as long as it would to have a baby ... so I've got some "newborn" pics to share!

I've shown before and after shots. I was going for a Spanish-modern vibe in a newish Spanish style house.

Clicking on the photo will take you to a slideshow, I think, I'm still learning to use smugmug.

Do not blame you for wanting to share . We remodeled our bathroom , and from that experience I can tell just how much effort and creative thinking went into this . It is stunning. Absolutely gorgeous....and I liked the before, too!
    Thank you for posting !

It all looks so good that I cannot tell which is before and which is after. Is the slipper tub new or is the tiled tub new?

Thank you. You guys are up late!

I have captions with each photo saying Before or After and a description. Just starting using smugmug, but I think in slideshow mode the captions are to the bottom left. You can also click out of slideshow (X at top right of page) and go back to Journal mode which has photos below each other and then the captions are right below the photo. The photo you see is the second photo in slideshow, so go back one to see the first "before".

emmarene, red/green is old and white/beige/brown is new!

It is absolutely gorgeous. I love the combination of tile - so pretty. Nice job!

WOW! So nice and unique. I love it!

I never think about toilets, but I definitely want a new one now and what I wouldn't give to take a bubble bath in that gorgeous bathtub! Great job!

Beautiful. The tile on the tub wall, OMG. Gorgeous. And you even found the Perfect Towels. Congratulations on your new "baby"!

Chispa that is one gorgeous remodel!!! I love everything but especially the wall tile and cabinetry.

Where did you find the fantastic register cover?

    Chispa,

That's so pretty and soothing! Just an "ahhh". The wainscoting tile is a really unique detail. Love the glass vanity!

    Enjoy.

So nice! Love the motif and how you've used it. Very thoughtful design with great results!

Modern Spanish is exactly what you got! Your choices are spot-on. I think the cabinet is my favorite.

Very nicely done! Love your flooring and bath tub. Do you mind telling me the details? I have a master bath and hall bath remodel on our to do list but I can't seem to get inspired enough to start.

It's so pretty! You did a great job.

    It's lovely!

Thank you for all your comments. I've never had a brand new master bath, so I'm really enjoying the results. There were some hiccups along the way, such as one tile that just did not go and I knew had to be torn out the next day, cool idea for medicine cabinets that didn't work and a toilet that was backordered for 6 months! I tried to buy US made products were I could and quite a few are made right here in CA.

msrose, the toilet is a Toto Legato and so far it is doing its job!

sueb20, I had bought the same towels for our guest house bathroom a while ago and knew it would work in this bathroom, so a few months ago I ran back to Target and stocked up. The quality probably won't be durable, so I might keep them for "looks" and buy better bath towels.

jterrilynn, I knew I wanted something different for the vanity doors and spent several days googling. Finally found these and the cabinet shop turned out to be in the same metro area. They wouldn't sell the doors to my GC, so I had to use them to build the cabinet and pay their much higher price.

1929Spanish, aren't the registers great! I found several companies that had patterned registers. I found their dealers and looked at all of them, I liked this company the best. They are composite, come in different colors and can be painted. The company is www.distinguisheddesigngrills.com. I will probably buy some more for some of the public areas of my Spanish house.

Mtn, I saw a photo on Houzz with a similar makeup area and knew that was the way to go. It was a bit harder finding the right dimensions for that exact spot! There was nowhere to sit in the old bathroom.

rtwilliams, most of the tile was purchased at WZ and the floor tile is a porcelain, Stark (beige) 18 x 36. The tub is Tyrrell & Laing, Isis model, made in the USA.

    Wow, that is gorgeous!!!

Boy did you nail that remodel - every detail is just perfect! The vanity is stunning, love all the tile choices, and if that mirror over your dressing table disappears one day don't come looking here!! I want that piece or something similar - please share source, pretty please!!

dlm, thanks! Was that you sneaking around the shrubs last night? lol. The mirror was another item that required quite a bit of googling. Found it at Serena and Lily! They had a free shipping promo when I ordered and they just had their 20% promo this past week ... it is well made, came packed like a vault and is a "fair" price compared to the other few bone-inlay mirrors I found in my search.

You really did a nice job of it and those cabinets look worth the extra cost as they are so unique and beautiful.
About the hiccupsâ¦IâÂÂm there now in my bath remodel. My âÂÂvictimâ tiller is driving me up the wall with his girl voice. He is afraid of my very excellent plumber so I just sweetly say: wellâ¦I think IâÂÂll ask Jose about that. All of a sudden he turns into a man and manâÂÂs up. A girls gotta do what a do to get the job done.

jterrilynn, thanks! My GC was questioning my sanity for paying nearly double his cost for the vanity (GC makes his own plywood cab boxes), but he knew he couldn't make the doors and the guy wouldn't just sell us the doors.

I was lucky that I have a good GC and subs and they are always willing to listen and to figure out how to make something work. Don't let the tiler wear you down! Demand what you paid for.

    What a gorgeous vanity!

Will you tell us about the sconces on the mirror? Was the mirror purchased that way or did you buy the sconces and drill through the mirror?

I love your makeup area too!

You did an outstanding job on the bathroom, Chispa! The accoutrements with Moorish influence in the arabesque motif are really very thoughtful ways to take thee bathroom to a new and beautiful level--- far beyond what people usually associate with Spanish design. I love the vanity, it is my favorite element! A really, really nice renovation, the quality is impeccable. Did you act as your own GC?

One word comes to mind - magnificent! Your interior design skills are wonderful.

    Wow!!!!!! :)

Truly gorgeous!! Excellent choices -- and a masterful touch on the whole space! You have a really good eye for design, balance and color! :)

    I don't know where to start...the tile...the vanity...the details. It's beautiful. I'm sure you're really enjoying it. Nice job!

    Thanks all!

Kiwigem, the sconces are from Hudson Valley, Fulton sconce, polished nickel 1822-PN. Two bulbs each and 20-1/2" long. The glass/mirror shop measured the wall and sconce positions and did the cutting at their shop.

Kswl, my goal fo the vanity was simle, but different, with an emphasis on the moroccan style door. I also wanted a full size door without the dummy drawer they usually have on top. Plumber was concerned that you could see the base of the sink when you open the door, but who exactly would be looking under my sink and judging the view!!! I purchased materials myself and used a GC for the labor.

I've only looked at the first picture, about to delve into the rest!

Here's where my eyes and thought processes went. Hmm. Nice arched door pattern. I like the towels hanging. Love the solid, light large square floor tiles. Ooh.... look at the pretty tile reflected in the mirror. Oh! Nice glass tile on right. Ooh! Framed glass mirror.... and on and on :) off to the slideshow next!

Hmm. I actually liked the hex tile on the bathtub/floor. Was mulling over idea of using different accent diamonds and getting rid of the aqua colored tiles (about to photoshop too!) until I saw the new raised bathtub. Wolf whistle!! Very pretty tub (and what fun) but I simply ADORE that floor. (Retract earlier 'square' comment). Your tub is like the prow of a ship and the mosaic strip of tile is the icing on the cake. Lovely combination of elements, thank you so much for posting.

Just curious - where do you put the towels?!

chispa, this is so lovely! That cabinetry is to die for. I can tell you spent a lot of time planning and thinking this through -- it is beautifully executed. Well done!

Thanks oldbat and pip. Oldbat, we aren't bath people, so the few times we do use it, you can scoot the stool near to the tub and place your towel on it. I though about placing a hook in the tub area, but didn't want to mess with the clean lines.

Beautiful bath!! I am wondering if you could tell me where you found the hardware and what is it made of?

I have a similar style throughout my house and haven't been so successful with hardware that I like.

    thanks and enjoy!!

Thanks isabel. Do you mean the cabinet hardware? The knobs are from Rocky Mountain Hardware, Quatrafoil solid bronze knobs in the 1-1/2" size. If you mean the bathroom door hardware, they are original to the house and made by Emtek, similar to the link below.

Here is a link that might be useful: emtek

Beautiful. I have his irrational wish that you could keep both the the before and after. Both are such imaginative and masterful approaches to the space and both so unique.

nutsaboutplants, it seems people either hate or love the saltillo tile look. We knew when we bought the house that the red and green bathrooms would be gutted down the road! I have 3 more red/green bathrooms to go. This isn't an old spanish house, so the saltillo is pretty cheap stuff and I hate the look with the wide grout and cleaning those tile counters. The old shower in the master bath was a dark/dingy place, even with a light. So far we've removed close to 2000 sq.ft of the red saltillo flooring both inside and outside. We aren't too old yet, but saltillo, with its uneven surface, is most definitely not ADA friendly and can be very slippery when wet.

why am i the only person who cannot see the slideshow?

I'm really sorry hoovb, like I said in my first post I never post photos, I"m not on Facebook, etc. I paid for a Smugmug membership thinking that their privacy setting would work, but someone was able to link my photo and a friend here did a test and was able to copy ... I wanted to share with "friends" here, but I don't really want my photos all over Pinterest.

I really appreciate you all taking the time to view and the positive comments.

Thanks, yes I meant the quatrefoil on the vanity. Those are so pretty.

Chispa, I've been out of town and missed your photos, and after all these comments, I'm dying to see it. If I promise not to copy, would you send me the link via email? Pretty please?

I'm always too late to the party.
