sofa wall 'hijack'

I mistakenly attempted to hijack the earlier discussion about sofa walls. I posted my own photo in response to the OP, then looked at my picture and thought, "ick." So, here it is. I think I need to take down the two photo collages, the little tiles on either side of the mirror (uh oh, let's not get started on the mirror over the sofa! I like mine!), and either leave it alone, or maybe add something on either side of the mirror that's larger than the tiles that are there now. Maybe a piece of art on each side, and maybe I need to stop being so darn symmetrical! Any thoughts?

Here is a link that might be useful:

Although it's not my style, I think the mirror over your sofa is fine. The side tiles are just too small and the photo collages might serve better as a closer pair elsewhere in the room or on a smaller wall. How about a pair of sconces in lieu of artwork on either side of the mirror?

We actually used to have sconces and got rid of them. The floor lamp (which you can't really see) and table lamp are almost brand new so we're not going to go back to the sconces any time soon.

I think the mirror matches the style of the room very nicely. I too feel the pics are just too small and the collages seem a little out of place with the room. Again, maybe on a smaller wall in another part of room. That is what I did with my pics like that. If you do not want to do sconces then maybe some med sized iron work or 11x14ish sized pictures. Something warm toned would look nice. You are headed in right direction, it will come together soon.

My quick imput.........the lamps appear to be too far from the sofa. I would place them so they can be reached from the sofa and I I would also prefer they each have a heavier base.
Can the table on the right be moved forward, away from the wall? IMO, it's too far back from the front edge of the sofa, or maybe it can be turned so the long side is next to the sofa?

I agree to remove the two small tiles. I'd probably also take down the collages and place them together elsewhere. Are the frames oak? If they stay in that room you may want to consider staining the frames.

It's funny, the reason why the lamp on the right is so far from the sofa is because of the photo collage which is now coming down. So yes, the lamp will be moved over. The table is square so rotating it won't make any difference but it can certainly be pulled out from the wall a bit. The other lamp actually "goes" with the chair, which you can't see, in the corner. It provides light for reading in the chair. And finally, not that it matters because they're going, but the frames of the photos are the same wood as the mirror frame.

I may be nuts, but I think I would first swap the lamps with the books/items beside the couch so they were closer to the couch like previously suggested. Then I'd remove the two small tiles, and then put the two collages beside the mirror. I'd hang them about 3-4" from the edge of the mirror - not real far away. I think they would look nice together.

Then post us a picture for some feedback, Since you have the collages I'd try that before buying anything new.

I think Caroleoh has it right - take down the tiles, move the collage pix a few inches away from either side of the mirror, and move the lamps over.

One other thing that I think would help. You have mostly dark things there - the furniture, the lamps and shades, the mirror, etc. and then the very light wall color. I think you need to get a few pillows down on the couch with a lighter background and not too much dark color or print on them, to bring some of the light color down to the couch. I don't know for sure what the wall color is - it appears pink in the pix you posted, on my monitor, so this particular pillow may not be right. But something like this pillow with a lighter background:

Les, I was wondering where you were! I almost always agree with your comments when I see them elsewhere. And here is no exception! I just ordered new pillows about 2 weeks ago that are very similar to the one you linked to, except they're a circular print instead of squares! Originally I forgot to mention that the reason the photos are where they are is because that's where our sconces were, and they're covering up the mess on the wall left behind! So really the first step is to take them down and fix the wall! (This was done very hastily when we took down the lights -- long story -- but this is why the wall is a problem. Didn't think about it enough.) To be honest, my first instinct was to put the frames next to the mirror, but we needed a way to cover up the sconce "mess". So, wall repair is on the schedule for this weekend. We are also going to an Open Studios event so might end up finding a couple of pieces of art that may end up on the wall. Will post "after" pics.
