From the NY Times, a reporter consults with Bunny Williams about decorating her small apartment.

Thanks. It was a good read.

excellent read, I liked that statement she made:

"Everybody has the idea that wood is sacred," she says, giving my pressed wood shelves a look Stalin might have given Trotsky. "A lot of wood is ugly. If these were mine, IÂd paint them."

here is a link below to an interview and a lot of pictures from her appartment,
in the social diaries, those are a great read also.....

Harriet, thanks for the link, yes a gread read. She's one of my favorite designers, and I refer to her website often.

Mitch, a super in depth article about her. Thank you so much for posting the link. I'm sure you know her new book is set to release at the end of the month. She's has an appearance/book signing coming up as well.

I had to chuckle looking at her pix...what were the comments made in a thread here recently about too many bookshelves, and not displaying family photos in the main living areas? Looks like Bunny doesn't know that *rule* ;-)

    Thanks for the nice article!

It is no longer permissible for non-matched books crammed into bookshelves in living areas to be considered a "mistake". If it is good enough for a vaunted decor "authority" it is good enough for me. Well, it was good enough for me anyway. :-) Although I think her apartment is a little fussy and I'm admittedly uncomfortable with that caliber of fancy-schmancy stuff (yeah, yeah, I'm low-class, I know, but things like a sideboard costing twice as much as my car make me very nervous - they're gorgeous things but I feel like I should look at them from behind a velvet rope, since I wouldn't be able to afford to replace it, I'd be afraid to actually use anything), I do like how she throws such dissimilar stuff together and values comfort as much as aesthetics. I LOVE how she shamelessly displays "tacky" needlepointed-text pillows and tosses dog beds under the expensive antiques! It's like "I like it, d*mmit, I don't care if you do or if you think it 'goes', so it's going here" and I wonder if it's that 'tude coming through that makes it all work. I look at those pictures and it seems like every single room breaks some "rule". (Although as I said, it's important to know the rules - and I'm sure she does - in order to know when and how to blow them to smithereens.) Actually, she reminds me quite a bit of Julia Child, who was another beyond-cool person - I lived in South Boston when she was still living in Cambridge and her number was always right there in the phone book, I still kick myself for not getting up the nerve to just call and introduce myself. Surprisingly few people did, I think everyone was so afraid of her! (I'm actually very shy IRL, so it wasn't that I was afraid of HER, I was afraid of putting myself forward.)

BTW, I don't think pressed wood is sacred, and I'm one of the staunchest "don't paint nice wood" nuts out there. :-) Note the inclusion of the word nice though. Some wood is crap and would benefit from a coat of paint, but the urge to slather paint all over everything that doesn't move (Old Army adage: "If it moves, salute it. If it doesn't move, pick it up. If you can't pick it up, paint it.") is an urge that IMO sometimes ought to be squelched. :-)

mitch thanks for the link to Bunny Williams home.
I was beginning to think all interior homes of today
were sparce and it was *the thing* until I saw her home.
Most interior homes, especially on here, have nothing on coffee tables, maybe one or two pics on the wall., very very sparce.
I loooovveeeeeeeeeee *stuff*. My home would be so out of style until I saw Bunny Williams. Not that I have anything like she does but I do love lots of pics and *things* sitting around.
My attitude now is......alriiiiiiiight Bunny! Love her *stuff*. I'm in good company....just on a shoestring.

I enjoyed seeing her dogs, their bed and toys in these pictures instead of being edited out; makes her space more appealing and friendly.

    Thanks for posting,
    Sky

That was a cute article -- made me laugh. I did think that if Bunny Williams posted photos of her rooms on this forum, more than one person would tell her to get rid of the clutter. :)

if you want to look at decorator's dwellings and how much stuff they have, this link will give you 24 interviews with lots of pics; most of them are pretty candid in sharing how and where they live. Charlotte Moss is in there.
I got this link years ago on this forum but don't remember from whom......

Thanks for the article. She has vindicated my latest craze: mixing woods. Our 1920's craftsman needs "brown, brown" wood to make it feel right, I discovered mixing wood colors/types several months ago and have been loving the effect.
