Just getting started , ideas/suggestions??

I am beginning to start working on decor for our new house. The first room is the MA bedroom. I have two LR tables as temp nightstands. Any suggestions for new ones? I need help deciding which lamp/shade to go with. I have a nice ORB floor lamp with a beautiful gold shade that looks beautiful when lit and a pewter table lamp with a black shade that works with the bed color. Since I'm not a matchey type I wanted one lamp to be a floor and one a table.

I'm still debating on the art over the headboard. I was thinking of adding leaf candle sconces on either side of the print. DH thinks that would be too much in that space. There will be nature/botanical accents throughout the house but I don't want to overdo it. I have plans to make a wreath or swag to go there but need time to do that.

The wall color in this room is BM Spanish Olive but it doesn't show up that way in the pics.

The floor lamp shade goes nicely with ceiling light: (Please ignore the unfinished parts, like the light switch)

After re-reading post I realized my main question to you was not exactly clearly stated. I want your opinions whether the ORB/Gold or the Pewter/black looks best. I would get another to match the one I go with.

I love the end tables as nightstands - do you need those in the LR, is that why you're thinking of replacing them? Yes to the floor lamp, no to the painted cabinet/table. I like the artwork idea framed by the headboard, but think you need a bigger rectangular picture. No to the sconces - just do a picture or a piece of fabric art rectangular to fill the space. Or 3 smaller square pictures?

flowerchild, I LOVE your room. What great bones to work with. Your bed is wonderful and I really like the gold shade. If you could find a table lamp to match that, I think it would be great, although I also like the black shade with the bed. You probably can't go wrong either way.

I guess I agree, sight unseen, that the sconces might be a bit much over the bed. I like the simple rectangular lines you have working for you in our room.

Also in agreement with ajsmama that the end tables work nicely. Do you need to replace them?

I would go with the ORB because the floor lamp looks both unique and looks good in the space. Ditto for the ceiling light. The table lamp looks so common and does not go with the ceiling fixture either. If you went with the pewter lamps it may start to look too matchy-matchy with the fireplace. I would paint the white around the fireplace black to anchor it and help it hold its own with the heavy knotted beams and dark furniture. And since you did ask about it...I would lose the sitting area furniture you have now. The Early American chair with the pad does not do the space any good and the table just does not go at all with the delicate floral.

I think your DH is correct in his opinion that adding sconces would be too much "lighting" with the three lamps and a ceiling light. It would crowd the bed. Right now It looks so clean and streamlined with homey touches. The botanical theme is perfect for a bedroom. The colors you chose are soothing yet add some pop.

I like the use of the dark wood end table and foot stool with the painted bed. It's really a great space!

Thanks jaymie and ajsmama. The end tables could stay I like them except they are a bit low and I would like to have at least one drawer beside the bed. The color certainly works.

ajs: I was also thinking maybe that the print should be larger. or your idea of three would look nice too. Thanks.

jaymie: The house does have a lot of bones being a Timber Frame. We really don't need a whole lot of decor. One neighbor says the house feels like a piece of finely crafted furniture. that's why I am leaning toward clean lines, like your beautiful home, with a few unexpected surprises here and there.

dilly dally - Thanks for your thoughts. I didn't think that sitting area worked there either. I will have to find a spot for them in another room, I can picture a nice soft comfy chair there.
The bed looks like it is painted black in the pics but it is mahogany with a dark stain.

Super house and it is going to be great fun to decorate.

I would pass on the wreath/swag. Too country. I see your room as Pottery Barn Goes to Camp. Sophisticated furniture juxtaposed with a somewhat rustic envelope.

I agree that the picture over the bed is too small, but I like it nevertheless...just somewhere else (wonder how it would look over the mantel?). And I agree with whoever suggested darkening the wood around the fireplace.

Speaking of the mantel, you might consider larger items and fewer of them. I used to do lots of little things until I heard Christopher Lowell refer to them as "room dandruff."

Have you thought of painting your ceiling? The white looks a little stark against the light wood.

    You stole my bed!!!

I bought the night stands that went with the set, but that's just me.
As far as art over the bed, this is all I've been able to come up with:

It's not a very reliable piece of art, so I'll be interested to see what you come up with.

bbstx - "Sophisticated furniture juxtaposed with a somewhat rustic envelope." Well stated, may I use that in the future?
I think you are right about the white around the FP. What color would you suggest? Something warmer would be better. Keep in mind the color of walls. They are a nice olive green. We were afraid if we used a darker color the room would be too dark. The ceiling is actually pickled so that the knots show.
That sounds like Christopher, he is so funny. I love his style. I have been playing with some larger items on the mantle as you suggested. The round medallion can be hung higher on the wall. It does look much nicer.

Yes, it will be fun decorating the house. Unfortunatly, after building it we are left with a low decorating budget.....Thank goodness the "bones" are good.

    Thanks for your help

daisy - I love your wall art..did you notice my white fur pillow in the pics?? She loves the new bed especially in the afternoon when the sun is shining through.
Your bedroom is coming along nicely. I like your bedding and especially your piece at the foot of the bed.

Oh, yes I did see your "white fur" - great minds think alike!!!

WHERE did you find that bed? I've been looking for a new bed and that's exactly my style. If you want to share, my email is 2boyzmum@gmail.com. Beautiful room!

I hope this doesn't sound offensive, but your room seems to have a split personality right now. The bed area (which is really wonderful) has clean, modern lines while the fireplace side seems almost Victorian and much more ornate with the little table, chair and fireplace decor, especially the medallion. You have wonderful woodwork in the room which has a certain style that you'll want to accentuate. I think anything too feminine or frilly will work against that. You may already be sensing that yourself, and I'm sure you'll do a great job in finishing your bedroom decor.

Ingrid hit it right on the 'head'...I couldn't put my finger on it. I love the picture over the bed, to me perfect. Love both lamps at that end....not one by fireplace really. Flowery table and rocking chair need to go. I think I would just get a nice easy chair in perhaps a contemp. strip on cream or whatever your spread color is or maybe a shade of your green soft with a small strip in it. You'll find something perfect, just keep looking.

In agreement that not everything works in the room. The art over the bed is perfect as is. The bed is nice, it has an asian look, very simple. None of the lamps work, nor does the other furniture, with the possible exception of the nightstands. Oops on the ceiling shade also.

Think zen, spa-like, clean and simple. Maybe a sheepskin on the floor. Natural materials. Rice paper lamp shades or a dark shade like you have with a different lamp. Organic looking objets (and not too many), like a large basket of driftwood or something by the fireplace.

Instead of the rocker and table, what about a chair like this, seen on Overstock's website? The solid color is pretty, but there's also one in the same style, see on the side - Paris Jade. I've been tempted to buy it, but don't have the place for it and the color wouldn't do.

My mom has the slipper chair in her bedroom, and it's very comfy. She's received lots of compliments on it. The bamboo color might be a nice accent color, since you have some golds working.

Whatever you decide, your bedroom is off to a beautiful start!

Ingrid & susan Yes, I agree that the room has a 'split personality'. I was experimenting with what I had and now realize that most of the decor we had in our lake cottage does not fit in the Timber Frame. There is certainly NOTHING frilly about it. So I need to start from scratch. That would be great fun if the finances were available. The building drained us. I just have to be patient. I did remove the painted flower table and the chair will be replaced soon.

wodka: That is a perfect chair for the spot, Thank You. It is actually affordable too.

I have to totally rethink the mantle. I'm actually thinking of stripping the white paint and staining it darker. It would make the room warmer.
albertarose : I will get the name of the manufacturer for you.

    Thanks All
