What to do??

Here's my problem.....After the holidays we plan to paint our master bedroom, add crown moulding and redecorate. When we bought the house 12 yrs. ago we (stupidly, I admit now) did the master bath with dark teal green floor tiles, with a lighter tealy green wall tiles, dark teal green formica counter tops, white fixtures. Over the last 3-4 yrs. I've been searching for a comforter/bedding to coordinate with little success. Over the years we repainted most of the rooms and redid the Kitchen. The colors are mostly yellows, greens in various shades and I really am happy with the way it looks. the colors just flow together until you get to the master bath. Now it is time to get to our bedroom and I am really stuck for a color. I have purchased several sets of bedding only to return them because they looked terrible with the bathroom. However, I am desperate to paint this room. I currently have a set which is like an ivory color with a moss green bedskirt and trim. Our carpet is white.

So what would you do with this tealy green bathroom. I would really love to rip it out but money is an issue at this point in time. Any suggestion for a coordinating color? Bedding and wall paint?

One last idea we had...when we DO do this project we want to put in a coffeemaker in the bedroom. Maybe put in a butler's pantry type area. Do any of you have such an arrangement. Pics????

Thanks for listening....Kathie

Kathie, I feel your pain and remember my teal formica countertops and washed oak cabinets, very trendy in 1991 and was I ever happy to get rid of it in 2002. However, tile is not that easy to discard due to mess and cost. My first thought, honestly, is to shut the door to the bathroom and do your bedroom in the colors you like now. What about a soft buttercream, almost yellow color for the walls? If you feel it has to coordinate with the teal, I'd think that would work as it's used almost as a neutral in decorating from what I've seen. I also find it really relaxing which you definitely want in a BR.

Do you have any pics of the space?

I would leave the teal as an accent in your bedroom.
Since you already have the bedding set, just add a couple of teal accessories on the bedside tables.
Then add some moss green and mostly ivory accents in the bathroom.
This will coordinate it all together, and I think the teal will become an asset instead of something that you're trying to hide (which isn't going to work).
Good luck! I have some teal in one area of my home and I see it in stores here and there - it's a game to find just the right shade, but if you keep looking, you will find the right pieces.

I dunno....teal says blue to me and moss says yellow. Of course, the words we use to describe colors are just a study in semantics. I see a yellow bus, you see an orange bus and all that. But I don't think moss and teal play too nicely together.

You could consider using neutrals with a teal accent and maybe one other color that is strong enough to balance the teal, used in very small doses in the bedroom.

I'll link to a pic below where there is a teal-like accent wall and pillows. I am not suggesting an accent wall, just a way to make teal feel a bit more modern in a room.

Can you give us an idea of what the teal looks like....a paint color we could look at or maybe some photos?

If you're willing to spend a 'little' money you do have some options. If it were me, I'd cover the floor, or at least use a large area rug, made of faux sisal in a neutral color, replace the countertop, and paint the wall tiles. You can even paint the floor tiles, but I'd probably still use a large rug in traffic areas to prevent scratching.
For the countertop, it's not very costly to redo Formica. You can often buy granite for the same cost of vinyl if you can find granite remnants in your area.

I've seen the 'coffeemaker in the bedroom' in many of the new home show tours, so yes, it can easily be done. You can build something or you can set up a coffee area within an armoire or other piece of furniture.
I may have some pics from the tour so I'll look for them and post later.

If you choose to paint, do more research on the best paint and also ask over on the Paint Forum. There are additives you may need to use to make the job easier.

thanks for the ideas. Painting the tiles is not an option...hubby would not even consider it. I am not opposed to retuning the bedding but the problem is finding a new one.. I've been buying/returning bedding for three yrs now.

I've posted pictures on both Photobucket and Shutterfly but I can't seem to get them to this posting. Any help would be appreciated.

I was considering painting the bedroom some shade of buttercream as suggested because it would "go with" the rest of the house but I am open to any other color suggestions as well. I picked out some paint sameples ranging from beiges to yellows to greens. Does the bedroom HAVE TO blend with the rest of the house? You really cannot see it and noone would ever see the bathroom. (I thought of just closing the door as one suggested)

I have a great plan to redo the bathroom once the economy turns around. For now is must stay but the bedroom HAS to be done.

I like the idea of the armoire. The room is large 22 x 15 and can handle another piece of furniture. We have a Miele built in coffee maker in the kitchen and hubby would like to have the same in the bedroom area. I don't agree because that thing is messy and requires a lot of cleaning. Anyway...that is down the road. Thanks for any help

It's very easy to post your Photobucket pictures here. Just copy and paste the "HTML code" into your post. You need mouse over the picture for the code options to appear below the picture.

And of course your Photobucket album must be "public".

Your bathroom tiles look exactly like the tiles we used on the kitchen counter in our old house. I wouldn't call it a teal though, more of a dark forest green.

I agree that I would consider that a dark emerald tile, not teal. That is certainly an issue, as emerald greens are not easy to find right now - everything is more moss or sage.

The bedroom doesn't have to match the rest of the house - in fact, no one room has to match another. It is up to you as to whether that matters. Some people are all about one room flowing into another, others don't care. But certainly, even if you want your public spaces to do that, the private spaces can be different as no one sees them.

Will the loveseat be staying in the room?

Have you tried the Waverly Garden Images pattern? It has some of the emeral greens in it, along with more of the mossy greens. It would work with a creamy wall color, and then you could pull one of the colors from the floral for your towels, etc

    Waverly garden images

Otherwise, your best bet for now, until the emerald green comes back in style, is to go with the tone on tone creams and whites in the room, and then buy some fabric and have a couple of decorative pillows made for the bed, or look for some in needlepoint florals that would have the green in them. Add some candles, some artwork, and some plants and you should be fine.

Or, as you suggested, leave the door closed. :-)

les917, No, the loveseat and bench at the end of the bed are going. I checked out the Waverly garden images and it really is beautiful, however, I'd rather not go with floral since the reverse side of that comforter is a large floral print which I used for many yrs. It is time for a change.

Yes, I guess the tile is more of an emerald green and not teal. Actually, It is probably because when we bought the house I used forest green alot....carpeting, countertops in guest baths, etc. It was popular in the late 90s and I do like green. But over the yrs. and as decorating colors changed, so did I. I've redone every room except the master bedroom because no one really see it but us and the office which is next. But as I said in the original posting...it was a stupid mistake and I may have to live with it for a while longer. I may take your advice and not worry about the bedroom matching the rest of the house.

terriks, thanks for posting the pictures for me. I don't do it often enough to get totally familiar with it. I struggle every time. It took me two hours to download, upload and post!!!! Way too much time!! But I'll keep trying.

Oh now that the pictures are readily available, can anyone suggest window treatments for the bedroom? I want to get rid of those sheers again because they are old and our neighbor leaves his garage lights on all night and they shine right in our bedroom. Thanks, K

I like how your cream bedspread, beige carpet and off-white walls make for a soothing bedroom. I think replacing the shears with something a little more colorful would enhance the bedding. (Even a darker beige, I think, would give it a little more contrast.)

With such a soothing bedroom, I can see why the tiles are bothering you. Perhaps you could just replace all the accessories in there with cream colored ones. Not sure what else you could do to tone down the color that amount of space provides. Some big rugs, perhaps?

Can you try posting some other shots of the bathroom? I'd love to see what other wall spaces/areas you have in there and some more pics of the vanity area, etc.

I would go with either a black/cream damask or toile. Move the round frame to above the dresser & do a DIY padded headboard!! YUMMY Or even use an old door painted black & secured to the wall, I think you need something there. I have 5 if you need one! Curtains to match (so easy to make!) & I'd paint the brass on the bench, recover it in the same damask/toile pattern) or a solid color likely in velvet (cause I love it!) :). Make some pillows. Why does it have to match? I actually like your bathroom! :) Ignore the color, that's what I do, hubby picked it out, some kinda strange blue boy color....OY! My motto, when in doubt, just add black so I have. My next project once things pick up here...

hollygarden, this picture of the bedroom is a "before" picture. I just posted it for suggestions. All furnishings will go...bedding, bench, loveseat. I'll try to post pictures of the bedding that I bought last and some of the paint samples I am considering. Also some more pictures of the bathroom for charlieinnj. Thanks for your time. Also the two pictures in the bedroom are both Ethan Allen. I love the round frame but intend to change the picture itself. The rectangular one is not seen the the pic. I'll post. The large picture over the loveseat will also go. It is a picture of Angel Falls...supposed to be able to find several angels hidden in the mts. and waterfalls. Great, but the colors won't work with what I want now. Anyone have any suggestions for replacement art?

Here's a bedding set at Macys. Just an example -- for ideas -- how about a touch of British Colonial?

Add rattan or bamboo blinds (lined) from a shop like "Smith & Noble" -- check their website online. You then could add oil-rubbed bronze curtain rod -- and dark green (lined) panels on each window.

    Switch to oil-rubbed bronze lamps.

    Add framed prints of ferns.

Add dark woven baskets or wicker to the bathroom.

KAT, great idea, I never considered black. There actually is a headboard (and footboard) on that bed. You just can't see it for the pillows. That is our original bedroom furniture we bought when we got married 42 yrs. ago!!!!! I thought of a padded headboard because ours squeeks like crazy because one of the legs was split when I tried moving the bed myself once. I was going to replace the bench because it is wobbly...not expensive when it was bought. Can you paint brass?

I do sew and hubby is really handy so maybe we will try of this. Thanks

here are some additonal pictures of the bathroom, hopefully....left side of vanity, right side of vanity, shower wall, window wall, then comes the garden tub from the above picture. The other photos are of the bedding I have and some paint samples which may be hard to really see.

    Kathie,
I know if that were my room, I'd do either a woven shade or 2" blinds and curtain panels, probably in a linen, a large upholstered headboard in a chocolate brown, swap out the night stands for a larger chest on one side and possibly a 30" or larger round table on the other. I'd stick to natural colors, linens, oatmeal, chocolate brown and try to find a pattern that picks up a little of that green for an accent on either large euro shams or just a single pillow. I tend to lean toward more a more tailored style now, but once upon a time I had a cornflower blue and yellow french floral themed bedroom.

I was wondering if you have pictures of your re-done spaces so we could get a better idea of your evolved style. Also, if you have inspiration photos too, that helps.

I just saw an episode of Christopher Lowell's Work That Room on Fine Living Network (FLN. He helped a baby boomer couple whose M Brm was a very floral 1990's affair to a more sophisticated spa feeling. If you get that cable chanel, check it out. He uses luxury hotels as inspiration for room design.

To me the bathroom does look dated, but still livable. In your original post, I imagined much worse. Removing the wallpaper and giving it a coat of a warm color paint will definitely change the feeling of those tiles. And to answer your question, YES, ABSOLUTELY you can paint shiny brass. It's a cost effective way to update. I think either Krylon or Rustoleum paint carries an oil rubbed bronze paint color.

As for the master, again, removing the wallpaper border and painting in a warm neutral again will make the space feel warmer and cozier.

I'll link to my flickr page for some bedroom inspiration I've collected.

Another place that has great eye candy is Isabella & Max Rooms. It's a blog, just google that name. She re-did her master and it's gorgeous.

    Best of luck,
    Kathe
