Bathroom help

I am feeling like my bathroom needs a window treatment. The bottom half is an obscured pane, but would feel like it needs something more. I am also wondering if I should be replacing the large mirror with two smaller mirrors, but am stumped with whether that is a good idea or not. The quality of the pictures isn't great, but the color on the walls is a very neutral beige, as is the tiles on the counter and floor. The fixtures are rubbed bronze, but the faucets/cabinet handles are silver. The accents in towels/containers are green. Any ideas for modifying or adding to what I have going would be wonderful. As you can see the room is tiny and serves as both the main floor bath and the master bath.

This looking at the small area where the window is to the left:

This is a poor quality photo looking into the bath from the hall:

This is the sink area looking into the room, and would look identical looking the other way - two sinks:

Your window is so pretty- I think a pretty fabric valance with a neat trim would be stunning. I am not good at posting pics yet -but if you look at some magazine pics you will get inspired. I like the loose looking valances on rings with a neat fringe trim. If budget allows I would change out the faucets to match the bronze hardware or vis-versa. Maybe change out the light globes also. Lowes or Home Depot have a pretty good selection. I updated mine with animal print globes. We have a big mirror like yours over our two sinks also. When we remodeled we kept it and we are still planning on updating the look by framing it in with a custom made wooden frame.

I understand that in a space you see and use every day you might be ready for a change. However looking at your photos I'm not sure I'd change anything, esp. not add window treatments. The stained casing you have is beautiful and I'd just hate to detract from it, esp. as you have all those lovely warm wood (and beige) tones going on.

Have you thought about painting the space (or just a few walls -- I can't get a grasp of the layout) the sheerest olive / sage? It would go beautifully with your wood. Conversely, a really dusky peach (again, sheer -- just a hint of color) could be lovely as well: it would work with your wood and the green accents you have. Plus, peach tones are universally flattering, so when anyone looks at themselves in the mirror they'd have that pretty reflected glow.

Hopefully this bump will help others see your post and come up with clever suggestions.

    Good luck!

I agree about the mirror. I have a big one like that in my master bath, and I too am planning on bilding a frame around it. Yours would be pretty w/ a gilded frame of some sort. Lowes sells ths Mirror Mate stuff, but I don't like it. I am going to the lumberyard and buying my own wood and DIY.

I think since it's a small bath (like mine is), the big mirror makes the bathroom look larger rather than having the 2 smaller mirrors IMO.

Thanks for your responses. rmkitchen I love greens, and the hallway is painted a light sage green so I could maybe even go one shade lighter in the bath. I guess I got hung up as the adjoining master bedroom is blue (BM November Skies) and wasn't sure the two would go together. (As an aside I painted the bedroom last summer and am still struggling with whether I want to keep it this color as something doesn't sit right with it.) I also like the window trim/casing, but thought I might do something like a fabric shade of some sort where the trim could still be seen, but also think I could do some kind of valance. I guess I was thinking that a WT might add some softness. I'm also think there is something to be said with keeping with a big mirror since it is a small space, and have thought about having it trimmed out. Any thoughts on what kind of trim you'd put around it? I was thinking it should probably be something with bronze in it, but am unsure of myself.

    Did you see soonermagic's post?

In her laundry room she has a WT which could work for your bathroom: (obviously you'd use a fabric which works for you and your scheme, but I just meant the style of her WT would work really well for your window and not hide that gorgeous casing)

I am one of those who'd like to have my bathroom walls completely mirrored -- I want to get a good, thorough, well-lit multi-directional look! My point being, the bigger the mirror the better (for me).

Having said that ... I think straitlover has a great idea about framing your mirror. But I'll tell you, looking again at your pretty bathroom I think it would look lovely to have individual framed mirrors for each of your sinks. (with a frame which matches your window casing)

Now, that's just how it would look, not how it would function. If you find the large mirror works really well for you, then by all means don't get rid of it! But do think about framing it (a la straitlover). But if you are thinking "oh, too much mirror" then you have an alternate plan (maybe).

    Gosh, does this make sense?

Your bathroom is so pretty already. You clearly have a great eye!

Some sugggestions that can be executed over time. I think using real plants with color in the bathroom will add some color and you have a window so they should survive fine. I like the basics of the bathroom. I would get a really hefty looking shower rod in oil rubbed bronze or chrome (which ever is your preference). I would get a shower curtain that would match what ever you did with the windows. I would not do something too ornate. I would replace the faucets to match the new knobs for the cabinets. You have so many choices for knobs that it will really be what tickles your fancy at the time.

I personally don't like a whole wall of mirror like you currently have. I would get two medicine cabinets and get some beautiful sconces to go with the medicine cabinet. I would remove the one on the wall and fill the hole. I like the ceiling fixture you currently have and you can use the bronze call from that as your guide.

I think a silky green shower curtain or light blue would really make your bathroom look fresh.

    Good luck!

Lost track of this post and had to hunt it down again. rmkitchen, I also noted soonermagic's post and think that style of WT would be a great option. There are some peach tones in the small tiles, so perhaps I should think about a peach paint color for the room - is not a color I would normally be drawn to, but perhaps it would work. I'll have to think about the mirror....however I am now second guessing my choice of mixing brushed silver and bronze. I'm not sure that I can change them out at this point, so will have to live with it. Attached are close-ups of the cabinet hardware and the small decorative tiles that I have in the backsplash and in the shower area.

Does anyone else mix metals in their baths? I don't mind the mix of bronze and silver, but am curious if most of you stick with a sole finish?

Woops, I forgot to mention that I think the idea of changing out the shower curtain rod to bronze is a great idea. I was however a little disappointed, as I bought what I thought were high quality bronze hooks/toilet paper roll holder and with the rubbing of the cardboard tube on the toilet paper roll the bronze has rubbed off. That makes me a little worried that it is even more likely to happen on a shower curtain that has metal clips sliding back and forth on it daily. Anyone have a bronze shower rod and has this happened??

Oceana, I love, love that window. Do you have information on how you did it? As I remember you designed it yourself, but had indicated there are also set patterns. Would appreciate any resources you might have. Thanks

In our guest bath I kept the large mirror but added a frame to dress it up a bit. I just bought door/window casing, mitred it, painted it, and hung it over the top of the mirror with some square hook-like things.
