Kitchen progress - comments welcome :)

I accidentally posted this on the Home Decorating board :(

Hello ... I am in the midst of a small kitchen re-do. Granite countertops, new backsplash, copper farm sink and new faucet.

I am rather technically challenged; but do want to show off (a little bit anyway) my progress; so I am attaching my Facebook page (I hope that's not against any rules)

http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.2043413690951.2125167.1412619173&l=9289886836

Today we started the much dreaded job of taking off the 1x1 mosaic tiles on existing BS ~ not hard, a little tedius. They come off in 1, 2 or 3 tiles (usually one!!).

I am so hoping the Jeffrey Court Chapter 12 tiles work with the granite when I get it installed. They seem to be the only ones that have the 2x3 subway tiles for the area behind the sink. The field tile is 6x6 ~ I wanted it set diagnally, but don't think I have enough room. A 5x5 tiles would work, but can't find one with a companion tile to fit.

If anyone has any other ideas for a backsplash, I would love to hear them ~ Boxerpups are you there??? YOUR ideas are ALWAYS so fabulous!!

thanks a bunch!!

Are you planning to use that "orange" for walls adjacent to the cabs?

    forantha ...
Do you think the Orange too bright, not matching the cabinets or what is your thought (lay it on me!!!)

Because, yes, that is the Orange I am using. And actually, it looks nice in the kitchen. That's why I'm chosing the granite and BS in colors that I can easily swap out the wall color when I tire of it.

I have a north facing window that is easily 5.5ft. wide by 60 inches deep (double hung); and a south facing door (almost all glass), so I get a good amount of light in this kitchen.

In my current kithcen, with the 1x1 mosaics, I can easily change when I want to. And when I looked at granite, I was just drawn to the same colors. The delicatus brown will be in the same color family as the tiles (except for the black).

I am SO EXCITED about this small re-do. My only concern is getting the copper farm sink installed correctly. We will have to cut down the cabinet beneath the sink (sink tooo deep); and then I will be removing the Oak panel and replacing it with a bronze mesh (about a 1 in. pattern, set diagnally).

I like it! I wouldn't call it Orange, per se....more of an adobe earth color. Can't wait to see what it ends up looking like!

Thanks juniork ... the color is Pumpkin Spice from Ellen Kennon ~ and I just love it. The Orange is just such a happy color for a kitchen.

Down the road a ways, I *might* paint the cabinets. I'm really on the fence about that ... but they need something done with them. I'm thinking I'll put a coat of varanish on and see how they look ... I warned my husband of this, you know how men like: the look of wood!!!

    I appreciate your input!!!

I've used a reddish-brown "burnt terra cotta" paint in my ktichen but I don't have any dark wood. There is a contrast and the room isn't overly dark. We painted the walls during construction and decided it was good so we kept the color. No regrets.

How close are your paint and wood in intensity and tone? I'm concerned because on my computer they are very close. Personally, I'd use the paint on non-cab walls and put something that sets off the cabs on the areas adjacent to cabs.

I agree that this is a happy kitchen color. But having a dark kitchen is not a fun thing. We can't see the rest of your kitchen so we don't know about which areas will be painted. Glad that the tile is light colored.

Consider putting in a yellow or ivory white or greyed white to add a lighter contrast? Repeat the tile color or the countertop color?

Could you forego the red walls and use that color in accent items instead--towels, curtains, bowls, lighting, or whatever--?

Go look at the "red kitchen" threads--you will find more kitchens with this color or something akin to it. Good ideas and you can see the cabs that were chosen to compliment it.

Thanks for your helpful insite floranta .... I just painted the walls last fall; and I really don't have all that much wall space. I did two coats and a 3x4 space in my pantry (triple coated here) and still had a quart of paint left. I know, I have it saved in a quart can!!!

So, yeah, the cabs do touch the painted walls, but not a lot. We also put in crown moldings last fall, painted Lime White (F&B), my floor is off white 8 inch ceramic tiles.

Or do you think I should paint the cabinets an off-white??? This has been in the back of my mind a LONG time and just keep putting it off. (1) DH probably would not like this (2) would be afraid I wouldn't do a *good* enough job ~ tho I do a LOT of painting around here and could *probably* do it!!

And I will take a looks at the *red kitchen* threads ... you know, Orange is just another shade of Red!!!

I'm thinking I will wait until the granite/BS/sink is all in and then *think* on what to do with the wall color. And I will, this evening, *try* and put some pics on here, other than from FB, showing more of the kitchen.

Right now I am more concerned about the backsplash. And did another mockup on my FB page if you care to take a look.

Again, THANKS for your help ... trust me, I need all the help I can get!!

I like the orange. In fact, I like everything, but the countertop and backsplash, so I'm looking forward to seeing your changes...and that copper farm sink!

The wood looks so warm and goes very well with the orange IMHO, so I'd probably leave everything as is, until you get the countertops and backsplash installed. The black appliances look great and if you paint the cabinets white, they're really going to contrast with those. If you're hoping the countertops, backsplash and sink will take center stage, I don't think I'd paint the cabinets. Just my two cents :)

Thanks LL ... I agree, the counter/BS needs major updating. But you know, when I first had that done, everyone just LOVED it. It it/was pretty neutral, can put anything with it; and at that time, almost everyone did formica, so the ceramic was a real neat thing and hardley ever seen.

I like the orange too. I guess there is NOT a lot of contrast between the wall/cabinets, but really don't butt-up to each other that much either. So I'm thinking I will wait until everything is done and then see if I want to go a few shades lighter on the wall color.

Well, we have 78 degrees here today (MI) and I'm headed out to plant a few flowers; when I should be working on taking off the tile!!! That I can do in the evening!!

    Thanks again for your input!!

I'd rather be gardening, too! It's rainy today and I'm stuck working until 5..but then maybe I can at least do some weeding :)
