I think it is pretty impressive to build a structure that large without accidentally including a single redeeming feature, except for inflammability.

My oh my. My favorite decorating touch is the black leather office chairs on wheels around the kitchen island eating area. Runner-up is the back-to-back competing dining room tables in the formal DR - that really makes for an intimate dinner party.

Get rid of the carpet and wallpaper and you might have a pretty nice house. Except for the kitchen. I mean, I can see someone wanting pink. OK, not my choice, but hey, some people love pink. But at least go with a nice shade of pink! That kitchen is, IMO, depressing. I can't imagine eating anything that came out of it, much less cooking in it!!

Whoever buys it will need to put in a few hundred thou to make it livable I guess.

I could keep the wood floors in the study, the blue carpet in the music room (but I realize that is not for everyone) and MAYBE the red carpet in the media room, but only because it's movie theatre classic. And those assume the carpet isn't 13 years old and other changes didn't lead to replacing it anyway. I have now taken all the pink and green out of two houses -- don't care to make it three.

It kinda reminds me of what happened to my aunt's house after she moved from a 1970s ranch to a 2000s house. She decorated the new house exactly like the old one. Why waste money on new curtains and couches when those 40-year-old ones are still good? (But throw away the authentic vintage Eames chair because of some minor, fixable issue?)

Anyone else look at the other three listings linked on that page? They all need total cosmetic redos and the most expensive one has a large but awful kitchen. Glad I looked. Makes the money and effort I've put into my house look all the better. ;-)

The poor realtor is going to wonder why the house listing is getting so many hits!! My offer would reflect a major deduction for updating & remodelling, but in this market there are probably plenty of other houses to consider.

Someone must have been drinking heavily and dreaming of pink elephants when they made decorating decisions in that house!

As others have said, money doesn't mean good taste. I can't imagine the hours to be spent stripping all that wallpaper--my arms ache just thinking about it, lol.

The house seems consistent with amount of updating needed and the pricing of the other homes shown in the area. That's not an exhaustive market analysis, but makes me wonder what a move-in ready house would go for.

Nobody has mentioned the raspberry bathroom fixtures.... Were those custom made? At least the decorating style is consistent. I can imagine that the people who did this really loved it.

This is a prime example of when a house gets too taste specific to sell. The tile in my kitchen is that way (though most people love it), but the rest of the kitchen is close enough to current standards that someone could easily make a couple of changes that completely remove the most extreme "did it my ways". With a whole house like that? At that size? They're going to get at least half a million dollars less for it than if it had been decorated anywhere near current tastes when it was built (and if you look at the bones, it really does look 13 years old). It's probably going to take more than that to neutralize the most egregious bits.

Wild Rose and Raspberry were part of the Kohler line up in the 1980s. If you look at the toilet it actually doesn't match the spa tub, which is acrylic. The cabinets were probably lacquered to match the tub. I have seen dark green marbleized and purple swirled at home shows here in the late 90s.

I think the house is either 23 (1988) or 31 (1980) years old.

I am voting for an already a bit passe when finished in 1988.

The thing is, there are still people in this area who are doing almost exactly this, albeit not so identifiably 80s,
as we speak.

Maybe it's because of the Sopranos or maybe it's because of Jersey Shore, but judging by the comments I'm reading elsewhere, this is exactly what some people expect a house in NJ to look like.

Oh, well then the raspberry would give the date. (Ugh!) I think you're right about the 1988 because the conformation of the house is more of a '90's look, and that would put the typo at the junction of the two. Sigh.

I know people hate brass and wallpaper, but both can be done well....not here. It makes more sense as an actual '80's house, though. I guess. It's just so sad!

There is a house for sale by us that was renovated 7 years ago, with pink carpets washed oak and very 80's-early 90s looks. The seller feels they are selling an updated house but the buyers think it needs to be gutted. Some people are stuck in the past at the time of their lives they were happiest. Or, someone aspired to have a certain look and could not afford it at the time. They forgot to update their wishlist when they finally had cash.
The sad thing is a person with a lot of money/huge house and poor taste has more chances to make mistakes and the mistakes are in a larger format.

before we found our property and decided to build, our realtor brought me to a home that very closely resembled inside of jeannie's bottle ...except jeannie's bottle was cool and this house was not. the realtor is showing me the house and i just couldn't stop laughing. dh was very embarrassed but really, seriously?

new jersey has some beautiful homes. sadly, the home in the listing represents a fair share of the market. money after all, cannot buy taste.

I agree with the 1988 possibility. The two houses I took all the pink and green out of were completed in 1989 to 1991. Funny thing is that we bought this one and started taking out all the pink and green about the time dianalo's neighbors were putting theirs in.

I'd call that a shrine to "Inferior Decorating". I hope they turn it into a museum!

Seriously, look at that house behind all the...uh trappings and it could be spectacular! I would love to have the purse to recreate this home. *sigh*
