Small Kitchen Layout

Please help us decide on small kitchen remodel.

Plan A - Keep refrigerator in current location.

+ Convenient to counter

Plan B - Move refrigerator on its own.

+ Increases clear counter space to 5' minimum

Liebherr 1661 would fit perfectly space wise in either location, but still not sure about justifying the expense.

The current setup makes no sense, especially with trash all the way across the room. However, moving the fridge in the second plan gets you counterspace where you don't need it. You want space between the sink and stove, because that's where prep naturally happens. Can you move the sink to the left?

Does the door have to swing into the kitchen?

There's no indication of a window on the top & right walls...so how about this?

With standard depth refrigerator....much less expensive than a Liebherr! Some standard depth are 36" deep...but then it has a greater potential of interfering w/the DW.

I forgot to mention that I changed the door to a pocket door in the upper left corner. If it's an exterior door, it obviously cannot be made into a pocket.

If the door cannot be removed or changed to a pocket, I recommend reversing the swing so it opens against the refrigerator.

Be careful of door trim...you may need filler to allow the pantry (or any cab in that location) to clear the door trim. I show that filler.

I probably should have explained the layout...but it was late!

The layout gives you a fairly decent amount of workspace on both sides of the sink, especially b/w the range and sink where it's the most important...the Prep Zone! You have 30" (18" + 12") on the sink side plus another 21" (12" + 9") on the range side.

The range has 18" of safety zone b/w it and the doorway. 24" would be better, but you really need that workspace on the other side of the range. However, I would not go less than 18" b/c of the need for some safety zone while cooking (protect bystanders from splattering grease and keep them from knocking the handles of the pots & pans on the range as they walk by). 18" is plenty of room for emergency landing space and pretty good for a safety zone.

That 9" cabinet also gives you a nice location for trays and/or cutting boards. I suggest two shallow drawers on top for utensils or spices or pot holders and either a pullout or regular cabinet below for trays and/or cutting boards. (You also have the 18" cabinet on the other side of the range for additional storage.)

The corner susan is in a good location for storing pots & pans and/or small appliances. In my old kitchen all my pots, pans, colanders, and a few serving pieces fit on my lazy susan (the one w/the center pole). A super susan (no center pole) would hold even more.

This layout also puts the trash pullout in the Prep Zone but near the Cooking and Cleanup Zones. Over the years, I've realized that far more trash & recyclables are generated while prepping and cooking than while cleaning up and for a much longer period of time (70% of your time is spent prepping, 10% is spent cooking, 20% spent cleaning up.) This location of the trash gives you the best of everything!

The Cleanup Zone is separated from the Prep & Cooking Zone and there's plenty of dish storage (upper cabinet) and flat/silverware storage (base cabinet drawers...2 if needed) right next to the DW and out of the path of prepping and cooking. This becomes important if someone is trying to set the table or cleanup (loading/unloading DW) while you're trying to prep & cook.

The MW is also near the refrigerator and pantry...where the majority of items microwaved come from. Add to that the fact that the refrigerator is located outside but near the Prep & Cooking Zones and someone getting a snack will not get in the way of you while you're prepping and cooking.

The refrigerator location also eliminates the need to "zone-cross" to go to/from the refrigerator from the Prep & Cooking Zones (yes, this is a positive!)
