wood countertop for island... ?

Hi all - we are all over the place on our countertop selections. We originally ruled out butcher block/wood as a countertop option for our large (9x5) island due to the fact that our kitchen is open to our hearth room which will have a large table and we didn't want it to conflict seeing as the island will be 5 feet or so away from the table... now we're not so sure. What do you think? If you have wood on your island, do you also have an eat-in area close-by? Do the different woods conflict between the table and the island? Is a 9x5 island too large for the butcher block look? Would love to get your thoughts on this. Thanks!
