Kitchen Cabinet Idea

Hello. I know this isn't an introduction section but I'd just like to say I joined because whenever I search a question this forum pops up. I've used many tools thus far such as cabinet construction and concrete countertops. I'll be sure to post a BIG picture thread when I'm finally done but for now a question.

Has anyone built their own cabinets and used a glass as the top? Let me explain.

They'll be constructed out of 3/4 sides and 3/4 backing. Butt joints with no glue. I'm thinking of cutting a dado for the top and sliding a piece of glass from the rear to the front.

My cabinets are custom so they'll be I believe 34 or 36 tall. I can fit 2 normal shelves that extend to the front and a shorter one on the very top. This is so light can come in from the glass top.

I'd probably cut a strip of plywood and place it on the top and place rope lighting, the strip of plywood is just to hide the rope from site when you look up inside the cabinet.

I don't know, it's just an idea. I have an air duct overhang and a gap between the bottom of that and the top of the cabinets, probably about 12 inches so I may just install rope lighting anyways.

Let me know if anyone has heard of this idea before. I know of people adding lights inside and glass doors, but glass tops and lighting is something I've never seen before.

Stephen
