That walnut is a.maze.ing!! A walnut top is at the top (pun intended) of my list for my island.

I was just thinking about you yesterday and wondring how your place is coming along. The cabinets are wonderful and perfect for the space. And I LOVE the wide sliders. I know you've had a lot of fits and stops and starts, but it is all going to be worth it in the end.

Thank you guys! I feel really fortunate to have found the cabinet maker. I wanted a henrybuilt look. I worked until 9 PM last night and saw the island for the first time after work. I was prepared not to like it, as I really had trouble conceptualizing what it would look like. I was really pleased!

breezygirl, the pups are really growing. They are gangly and about 3/4 adult size now. Their mom/dad keeps very good watch over them, but I am starting to see them roaming around the neighborhood. I almost hit one on my way to work yesterday. He leapt from a fence right in front of my car in the alley. I hope they dont get hit.

chicagoans, it is a concrete floor. The original floor was in terrible shape so I had a new thin layer of concrete laid over the top. Originally, I had it scored every 4 feet, but the scores werent perfect and I also decided to move the underground return vents (with the help of this forum) and had it repoured. I actually like it better without the scoring - less busy.

flyleft, I dont know what kind of sink it is. I bought it on the recommendation of people in this forum and even though I havent used it, I am really impressed with it. I bought it on ebay. It came with dishes, a gorgeous walnut cutting board, sink racks, etc. It will be just be one person cooking for now, but it's big enough I think two could. I have seen pics of two kohler carbone faucets spaced out on it. I also was going to go with marble on the floating cabinet, and thought the tray would be helpful with messy items. I originally bought a 33" blanco precision but when I changed the cabinet sizes, I realized it would look too small in a 45" base cabinet. I am going to use the blanco in the laundry room.

The birds really are spoiled...they will have their own room in the new house.

Tracie - LOL! I am a little worried about the caique. He does like to chew. I will have to keep my eye on him with the island. I am sure he could chew it into a pile of toothpicks in no time.

I bought two of those electric outlets that spring up from the middle of the island. DO you all think this might ruin the aesthetics? There will also be a sink and cooktop. It is either that or put outlets on the side. The cabinet maker left a dead space for the electrical and plumbing to run through the middle. I am going to see if he make tiny walnut caps to put over the outlets.

I like the floor unscored, too, and the cold air return under the sink run is in the shadow line of the cabinets, so it should really disappear.

I was wondering where you were, both personally and in terms of progress. I love the island. I really like the nice, beefy floor returns. It was a look that I fell in love with and had considered for my own space but alas, too modern for my current home. Someday I will have a MCM house where they will be perfect. It looks super cool.

Not so sure about the springy outlets. Are you planning them for the island? It'd be a shame to break up that span of lovely wood. marcolo may want to chew on it but my first impulse was to crawl up there and lay down and pet it.

I am scared though...the cabinet maker this AM said the walnut island top and sides will be removed and re-finished at a factory. He splashed water on a sample and said that is what it would look like. I really like the matte look, but I suppose it needs to match whatever the doors will look like.

He is going to try to make some walnut round pieces to hide the outlets. THey will be recessed in the island. I do hate to break it up, but I know I will be sitting up there with my laptop a lot.
