Newbie...Need Layout Help...Please!!!

Hi...I am new to posting, but have been a lurker for a while. We will be remodeling our kitchen and I wanted to get some feedback on the initial layout that we came up with. We will be opening our tiny kitchen up by removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room and making it into an eat in kitchen.

One of the concerns that I have with this layout is how close the stove and refrigerator are. Something that I was thinking as an alternative was to put the fridge where the pantry is, but then where would the pantry go...or do we need a pantry?

Thanks so much for your input.

You are going to have a nice sized space but are cramming your work area into that corner between the sink and range. First big question is can you switch out the low window to a counter height window? You, IMHO are wasting a huge amount of real estate on the desk... typically becomes a dumping ground for papers. The setup goes against the natural flow of a kitchen... which should be frig, to sink to range. How to help really depends on the ability to change that to a counter height window.

I have a contractor coming today so I can ask the question. The other thought that I had was to get rid of the window. There is the window that you see in the layout at one end of the kitchen and there is another one directly across from it (at the bottom end of the layout). Is that enough light or should I keep the window?

Have you given any thought to moving the fridge and pantry across the aisle to the wall that is 118.5"? That way you can extend the work surface right to the window, then move the range over so that it's centered in that run. That still gives you the window area and the space to the right (approx 7') for a kitchen table. That would be cheaper than changing/removing a window.

Also, I think it would be more visually pleasing to have all of the "tall" elements (fridge and pantry) in one area.

    IMHO :-)

That is a good idea. I will have to try it out the next time I go to HD. Thanks. Any other suggestions?

I'd keep the window. On the right of the range, as you approach that window, I'd Not put the frig-but keep going with uppers and lowers and more counter-at the window I would cut back your lowers to 12 or 15 in deep-continue to the other side of window-keeping the reduced depth on lowers. Then I'd take the frig-along with the storage equivalent of your pantry and place it on the opposite wall which is now empty. You will clear the area
around your window, and with some decorative uppers as you reach the dining area I think you'd get a nicer effect[glass door uppers?]By reducing the depth of the lowers, and even with frig and some cabs on the oppos wall,it should work out for passage through. Maybe open shelves to the right of the window, if upper cabs aren't needed!

If it were me, the pantry would be too far away from everything else. Where does the doorway next to the dishwasher go? And the one at the other end of long wall?

Do a search in this forum on drawers vs doors, speaking from experience good sized drawers on either side of the range (see inspiration photo) are far more user-friendly for pots and pans than a regular cabinet with a fixed shelf. My next kitchen will have lots of drawers! Other must haves: pantry, under-cabinet lighting, backsplash.

joyjoyjoy...The doorway to the left of the dishwasher is to the family room and the other one is to the entryway. Believe it or not my current kitchen is only 94 inches wide and has 4 doorways...the two that I mentioned above plus one into the current dining room and a door going outside, which is approximately where we will be putting the new stove (we will be bricking the door up) so it is a challenging space to work with.

Another question...sorry...another kitchen designer suggested putting the sink in the corner. If we move the fridge and pantry to the other wall would you suggest doing that?

I rather like the sink where you have it-the window above makes it seem airy and pleasant. You can do a lot with blinds/curtains and a great faucet to make your own personal statement there.

If you put the sink in the corner it either has to be small or one of those weird ones where the basins are perpendicular to each other. Your sink is perfect where it is. I do recommend a goose neck faucet with a pull out sprayer like in my picture above.
