Question about 30' cabinets

Today I finally had my first appointment with a cabinet person (representing Quakermade and Canyon Creek cabinets)and when I indicated that one wall of the kitchen was 30" countertops she right away said, "well, you know that nobody makes 30"cabinets, right?" She did say that some companies makes 27" cabinets "but that's the deepest". I couldn't really argue with her since it was my first appointment but I sure knew where to go to find out if she is right...so I'm wondering if this is true? I assume that a 30" countertop means that the cabinet space is really only 28.5" but I sure was looking forward to those more-than-normally deep pull-outs and drawers (full-extension,that is)....is that really not available? TIA

Most stock and semi custom lines only offer 24" deep cabinets. Even most custom lines don't offer 30" deep cabinets. You would have to have a true custom cabinet maker--not just one who calls himself that and orders doors and boxes and puts them together. The costs may be higher than you think for such a custom feature. The problem will be the drawer slides. Drawer slides are sized for distince "stock" sizes, and finding ones that deep that are full extension......well, let's just say I've never seen any that deep with full extension.

In every kitchen I've designed that used deeper than normal countertops, I've used regular depth cabinetry pulled forward with blocking and then skinned the open sides with a peninsula skin to hide the cavity.

Thanks, live wire oak. I guess this is just the beginning of the choices we have to make. I prefer the finishes on the national lines of cabinetry but if I want 30'' cabinets I'll have to go with a local (CA) cabinetmaker...I've never heard of peninsula skin but I do get the basic idea. Guess the big question is the one you refer to: higher costs.

I ordered my cabinets through Scherr's Custom Cabinets, and the cabinets along the cooktop wall are all 28 inches deep with ~30" counters, with 15" deep wall cabinets mounted above them.

I also have some cabinets that are 17" wide. And the cost for a 17" wide cabinet was higher than a 15" wide cabinet would have been, but less than an 18" wide cabinet would have been.

They are a great company to work with, they're prices are quite reasonable, and the quality of their cabinets is top-notch.

    hello--
I just did a google search and found several places that have 30" and longer full extension drawer slides. Scherr's is great to work with. I did some very odd sized cabinets for my mudroom and they were great. I even had an idea for something slightly unusual and they solved the problem. You would need someone to put the cabinets together if you are not DIY, but Scherrs has so many options in woods and construction it is almost daunting.

Thanks, misstheatre. After Bob's posting, I went to the Scherr website and I was impressed. I think I will give them a call although from what I could see on the website it did confirm my original hunch that they do not do inset cabinets. (There didn't appear to be a place, even in the catalog, that discussed the types of framed cabinets they offer--did I miss it?) But that of course may end up being a "trade-off"....Today I did have a meeting with a different cabinetmaker, a local company called Expressions in Wood, that was much more reassuring. He said under 30" cabs they put a 28" cabinet and use 27" drawer glides...not perfect but at least he didn't react like I was crazy, like the first one did! But I'm curious, misstheatre, if you could refer me to some of the places where you found 30 inch and longer full extension drawer glides....thanks!

Prior to deciding on custom cabinets, I looked hard at Brookhaven and seriously considered DuraSupreme. DS offered cabinet boxes 27-30" deep, but drawer boxes and pull-outs only came 21" (to fit their 24" deep cabinets). That was a waste for us since our lower cabinets were mostly drawers. Even in semi-custom/"custom" manufactured lines, the drawer boxes tend to be the limitation.

Our custom cabinet boxes are 27 1/2 " deep with 24" drawers and full extension, undermount Blum soft-close glides. I'm pretty sure our cabinetmaker said he could get 27" full extension glides but it would have required increasing the cabinet depth a bit more than we wanted to. I think I remember seeing 27-30" Accuride, sidemount, full extension glides online.

As for price, by the time we added on all our upgrades to the DuraSupreme cabinets(including inset doors), the custom cabinets were not more expensive and we got our deeper drawers, as well as other custom details not available from DuraSupreme. The finish is a sprayed on catalyzed finish and we got to choose the sheen level, so it resembles a furniture finish more than the DuraSupreme or Brookhaven finish did.

If you really want to get the full advantage of deeper cabinets, definitely take the time to look at all your options.

    gailrolfe,

Scherrs only does frameless cabinets, so since inset doors pretty much require the cabinets to have a face frame, Scherrs would probably not work for you.

Thanks, Bob. On your recommendation, I contacted the company and they clarified similarly for me....will definitely keep them in mind though if we change our plans (or should I say bust our budget?) as I am impressed with their responsiveness and their website is very interesting.

Kerf Design does inset fully-custom RTA cabinets. However, they do have a very distinctive 'look' to them. No idea how much it costs, but check it out:
