Backsplash Help...small SS backsplash??? Pics?

Ok, so I need some backsplash/counter into the window/window casing help. Here are two things I'm considering:

1. Have a Soapstone Backsplash 3" high all the way around the counter. See mock-up of casing/SS backsplash with Grazia Reef (blue) crackle tile (mine will be subway 2-1/2 x5, the photo shows a 5x5.

2. Have the subway tile as the backsplash and have it two tiles high into the window area (picture shows a 5x5).

Picture of window wall...sink will be to the right.

Picture of Hood wall ...perpendicular to the window wall.

What would you do? Both the soapstone supplier and the person doing the mosaic behind my cooktop recommended a soapstone backsplash..the smallest I can do is 3". I am a messy cook, and know that I will splash water around the sink and generally just make a mess, therefore, I want some protection for the window casing (mdf) so that I minimize damage to the casing.

Which should I do, the 3" SS backspash with no tile around the windows (tile would dead end into the window casing on the left). Or...do tile (thinking two rows) in the window/sink area with no SS backsplash. One thing to note, if I do just tile, the profile of the casing will be about 1/2" deeper than the tile, so the casing will not nicely dead end into the tile, but it would into SS.

Hope I've explained well enough...Thanks for your help.

I was quoted 12.50 at the tile store in Springfield today for reef. I'm wondering how all the variation will look - You'd think all these decisions would be easier!

What kind of mosaic are you doing behind the range? That would kinda impact my decision. Now I love crackle tile so instinct would lead me there but I'm not sure if I'd prefer it to the SS since you want to keep it simple and go up only 3"-5". I also do love how that soft blue play off your cabs and SS. Hmmmm.... are you going to paint? If so, what color?

I am doing blue walls...a gray blue. My mosaic, which will be custom made for me will be a broken tile mosaic..it will be a beach scene. I will have a border to make the mosaic look like a picture.

Does that help at all?

Your description helps alot... and I'm voting SS. I love that crackle though... could you use that subway as a border around your mosaic? I think the blueish walls will look perfect with the SS!

I would do a small 3" SS backsplash and then have the subways above and surrounding the mosaic....the tile just wouldn't extend over by the window sink area...just by the cabinets

The tile would also go over in the beverage center area (to the left of the cooktop).

Any other opinions?

I like the idea of just the tile - no ss backsplash - too much going on with one backsplash and then another and a mosaic picture and a frame around the picture... just my 2 cents. I picked up some samples of the reef 2.5 x 5 today - very pretty.

Thanks prill...I'm leaning towards only doing tile in area to the left of the casing...then in the window area just doing paint and the casing down to the counter. I guess I'll just have to be more dilligent with cleaning.

The Reef was the first tile that spoke to me...I really thought I was going to go for a more solid blue, but reef is so much softer....it allows me to play up the color of the walls more...not that I have a lot of walls...And, I found out that my designer can get it for about 12.50/sf where I was quoted around $15/sf.
