what kind of lighting do you recommend for under kitchen cabinets? what kind do you think should be avoided? my lights will be shining on cosmic black granite, if that makes any difference. thank you!

My only advice is to make sure you have it on a dimmer. I love being able to put the light at various levels.

We are very happy with our Kichler linear lighting. Juno and Seagull make similar systems, i think. There was a problem with our bulb/lampholders--they didn't all light up or light up reliably. I finally called Kichler late last year (2 1/2 yrs post-reno/install) and they determined that we had the old style holders, which were known to have this problem. They sent out the "new-style" replacement holders and they worked wonderfully!

They give nice, even lighting. We have them on a dimmer but rarely if ever dim them. If left on for a time, they do become quite warm (Xenon bulbs themselves do get hot), but that doesn't bother us.

I agree on the dimmer advice. Other than closets, every thing in my house is on dimmers (esp love it in the MBA!).

I dont know what type we have --- they are strips and were state of the art (8 years ago!). But I have this caution. OUr undercab lights warm up the food in the cabs above. They also, in some weather, can cause the bread in bags on the counter to sweat, and then go moldy.

We keep all foods away from the lights --- i understand they have improved on this, but ask.

Avoid halogens. They will melt things and I found them too hot to be functional. I posted my UCL plan in the lighting forum. They are really nice. They aren't quite installed yet, but from our tests, I know they will be great.

We installed Alico ZeeLights -- Xenon. I price checked & think they are similar if not a little cheaper than the Kichler. I understand they are cooler than Halogen, but not as cool as LED (but cheaper). My old florescents heated up food, since Xenon is a form of florescent I'm not sure how they compare to heat, but the type/color/cover of the light is very nice. These have a high & low setting (manual dimmer).

I put most of my lighting zones in the kitchen on 3 or 4 way switches & only dimmed the overhead lights (light is one point with 2 or 3 switches on the walls) since I hate walking back across the kitchen to turn off an undercounter or over sink light. It drove my contractor crazy, but I'm happy (& he's happy since I'm happy -- actually he's very collaborative & had good ideas to make things work the way I wanted, but kids me about all the wires in the walls.) The time to put all those wires in the walls is when you have the sheetrock down. :-)

    Good luck.
