Rodding is not meant to replace overhang supports. It's only used to strengthen granite that might be fragile, such as the narrow strip in front of the sink. I had a fab shop make me some supports for my overhang. They are stainless. I have not painted them yet, but probably will paint them black to make them blend in. Make sure that pony wall is built to handle the weight! If the supports attach only to the top plate of the pony wall, all the forces of that granite will be trying to twist that top plate right off. A better design than the one I used would be to use an angle brace. Attach it to the face of the pony wall, under the drywall. Then the forces are distributed down the face of the wall instead of just on the top plate.

Here's my supports. I wanted to just use 1/4" flat plates, but after I installed them, they had too much flex. So I took them back and had the web added to the bottom. They are not invisible, but are also not noticable at all.

Thanks for the quick response. I just noticed a thread below mentioning the IslandBracket from Chemical Concepts. I see they will support an 18" overhang. Looks like this may be our easiest solution.

Check these too....they say they will support an 18" overhang. But again....it's going to depend largly on the design of the pony wall.
