Appliance Handle size

We have a Subzero 650 overlay frig & freezer so I am looking for two appliance handles. Is a 12" handle too small for the frig door and freezer door? I like the Ephram 12" pull from Restoration Hardware and the largest size for that pull is 12". If that is too small, what size is best for appliance pulls? Thanks.

Nancy--I'm glad you posted this question because I was just about to post something similar. We have a 30" Thermador Freedom refrigerator which will go next to an integrated Liebherr 24" refrigerator/freezer. I've been going round and round with our kitchen designer about whether or not the 11 3/4" handles I want to get for the three doors on both refrigerators will work for the Thermador. I can tell you that our local Expo Design, before it closed, had a 30" panelled Thermador on display, and, as I recall, the handle was about 12" long. My recollection is that, while the door had a very tight seal, it could be opened fairly easily with that smaller handle. Of course, now that I can't go look at it, I'm second-guessing myself. All this is to say that I think a 12" handle will work fine especially since your Sub-Zero has smaller doors than the one massive door on the Thermador. You have to decide if, visually, a smaller handle will look OK on a your refrigerator doors. Good luck.

    >antique brass, which is not a popular finish

Well, you know, it seems to be coming back right now, so if you're not in a hurry there may be a lot more choices in the near future.

I hope that you're right, writersblock!

Have you tried TopKnobs? I know their web site isn't the easiest to use, but they do have traditional antique brass appliance handles in a variety of lengths.

Thanks you, tzmaryg, for suggesting TopKnobs. I like some of their applicance handles but the site isn't working well so I can't see the options for lengths or costs. I will check again later. I also like their Aspen line which was to have been released last month but no information is available yet on the site. What do you think an appliance handle length should be?

nancyaustin, you need to download the price list to see the sizes.

I have the Subzero 700 and I am using the same 5" pulls on the fridge and freezer that I have on all my cabinet drawers. I used them on the FP dishdrawers with integrated panels as well. 5+ years with no problems.

I will do that, writersblock. Judeny, glad to hear that you've had a good experience using 5" pulls! Thank you for your help.

I have 12" pulls for the upper portions of my subzeros fridge and freezer (27" 700TC) and 8" pulls for the drawers. Definitely big enough!

Richelieu also has many appliance pulls in many finishes. They carry that twisted one just like TopKnobs but for much less. Just went thro the ordeal of ordering hardware for my whole house. Took me over a month.

Mairin, thanks for confirming that the 12" pulls will work. Bobber4, I'll look at the Richelieu site, too. If finding kitchen hardware is this difficult, I know I'd have problems making selections for an entire house and it would take me more than a month! Does any one have an opinion on the quality of Restoration Hardware hardware? I appreciate all of the responses!

I used all RH pulls and knobs for my kitchen (in satin nickel) and was SHOCKED to find very inexpensive pulls that I really liked at Home Depot! They don't match perfectly, but neither do my oven pulls.

(I too was frustrated by RH's max. length. They have so many sizes for hardware, yet seem to forget about the need for refrigerator pulls!)

smarge, are you happy with the RH pulls and knobs? I'll look at Home Depot to see if any resemble the Ephram pull style in antique brass that I like. I'd be glad to save money on the hardware!

I have RH pulls and knobs. Was told by RH that their pulls were not suitable for appliances. I think the screw portion of the pieces is not hefty enough to stand up to the daily tugging. I own a SZ650 and you do need to pull hard!

I am very happy with my pulls and knobs, Bistro and Adeline. They are finished well, very smooth and a pleasure to use. I ended up with Liberty Colossus pulls for the appliances in their Blueprint style. Doesn't look like they have antique brass, though.

    nancyaustin -

Yes, I am very happy with my RH pulls and knobs. I actually used several different versions in my 6 bathrooms as well as in my kitchen. They are well made, feel nice in the hand and come in a wonderful variety of sizes. (except, of course, appliance sized!)

I actually did use a 6" pull for my DW's and it's working fine.

Here's a pic showing the knobs and pulls I used - one of them is Ephram, but I don't remember which!

and here's a pic of my SZ refrigerator pulls from Home Depot. I don't remember the brand, but they had a lot of this brand in stock when I checked it. They were so reasonable compared to what I was finding online that I thought they'd look or feel cheap somehow, but they are really great. (They are 18" center to center.)

And ours, by contrast, is quite short but sturdy. Not the "look" you are seeking, I know, but just to give you an idea that "short" works for a fridge. Ours is probably no more than 6".

Amy, I will definitely check with RH to see if the Ephram can be used as an appliance pull. Thanks for the warning. Smarge, I really like your appliance pull;that's exactly the simple, clean line I am going for so I'll be sure to check out Home Depot. You have the Ephram pull on your drawers and they look great! Eliz, your rustic handles are so good looking and show that the smaller size really works. I appreciate all of your suggestions!

Update: Amy, Restoration Hardware was concerned about the use of a 12" Ephram as an appliance pull for a Subzero, just as you said. So, today, I contacted Subzero and spoke with a technician who looked up the Ephram pull on the RH website. The technician said she saw no problem with using this pull because it had two connection points and that the 12" size would be fine. The technician said that many people want to use knobs, not pulls, on the SZs and a single connection point is not sufficiently strong. Obviously, many people call Subzero to ask just this question. Thanks to all of you for your advice and I hope that it will be helpful to you, stei7141!
