Average time from template to install?

I'm sure there is no such thing as an "average" but if you could share your experiences, I would sure appreciate it. I'm looking for the time it took from templating (for granite, marble or soapstone) to install. On average, how long does it take for a shop to fabricate the counters? I'm sure I'm being awfully naive, but I assumed that this would be a fairly quick turn around and am finding out that this isn't necessarily the case. TIA for sharing your knowledge! Jaymie

Of course it depends on things such as how busy they are, how many workers, etc...but 2 weeks should be long enough or they should tell you they're running behind. Hope this helps...

I was told 10 days to 2 weeks. They were accurate!

I had my templating done today and they made an appointment for installation for a week from today. We'll see...

It took 2 weeks for my Black Canyon quartz.

I don't think this is typical, but for us it is 3 1/2 weeks. There is a holiday in there too so long weekend delays. I was disappointed as I thought it would be sooner.

I was two weeks. But I know that my fabricator picked up the stone one week AFTER the day he templated. He then took it to his shop south of the border and had it back in a week. That means that the actual fabrication only took six days. The whole process took two weeks from template to install. It was a long two weeks!!

One company that gave me an estimate on cabinets said 3 to 5 weeks after installation of the counters. This is a custom cabinet shop that has its own granite yard and handles fabrication and installation the granite. A second company gave me an estimate today. Again custom cabinet company but they sub out the granite fabrication and installation. They said 2 weeks.

We had our caesarstone intalled a week after they measured. Our entire kitchen took about a month from start to finish.

Man! I thought this was crazy. Woe is me. Well, I guess all I can really do is be really nice and see if they can accelerate the fabrication at all. Guess this was one of these questions I should have asked before signing the contract but it never really occurred to me the turn around time would be so great. Shoot!

I think 2 weeks is about normal, since once they template you get in line behind other jobs. But for my kitchen granite, it was actually 3 days. When they called for install, my contractor said "holly crap not yet!"

Mine took a little less than a week. However, the granite yards here are hurting with the economy being so bad and they are not as busy as "normal." If you are having a full granite backsplash done (like me), they come and template for the backsplash after the counters are in. That way they get it exact. It takes a week (again, in my case less) for the backsplash to get in after the templating. Also, for my backsplash, there was no cutting (other than one spot) for plugs. I did plugmold under the cabs for electrical. You can't see the undercab lights nor the plugs as they are under the cabs.

2-3 weeks is average. Four weeks is long but not unacceptable by any means. I would suggest you don't ask them to hurry the fabrication. Countertops are so very important and so very permanent -- I wouldn't want them to "cut corners" so to speak (bad pun, I know).

Really, if the other contractors have to wait, does it matter if it's 3 weeks or 4 weeks? Typically, it just matters more that you can give them a firm accountable date that their work will resume, and it matters less when the actual date is. If they don't have work to fill in their downtime on your job, then that's their problem; a delay for granite or other contractors is more than typical.

Don't give your granite guys a good excuse to do a bad job.

Completely agree mavmomma, I don't want to rush the job and botch it. The only reason the delay hurts so much is that we are out of our rental on Monday and into temporary accommodations. I'm reconciled to that, but I would have REALLY liked to be able to be in the house by the time the school year starts. Once the kids start school, I will be driving a two hour round trip to get them to and from school and one is a preschooler who starts at a different time, so I'm basically going to be "hanging out" in a coffee shop or something trying to work while they are at school to cut the travel time down to 2 hours a day. It is doable, but not ideal. We are in the last stretch here and just really anxious to be done. The four week fabrication time was just another unexpected delay.

I'm practicing patience. We will get there eventually and it will be worth the wait.

    Ours was 5 days.

Y'all are just tormenting me now, aren't you! ;-) j.

    Jaymie,

My input on this would be that it will vary depending on the complexity of your kitchen, edge detail, material, etc. and of course the company's capacity. 10 working days is an acceptable turnaround for a 'standard' kitchen. 20 working days (4 weeks) they better give you an Excellent quality work that is worth your wait. I also agree with Mavmomma, you don't want to give the fabricator an excuse if they were to deliver a product that is not up to your standards, your patience is worth more than gold, you waited, now they must deliver.

2 1/2 weeks for us. Seemed like forever as that was holding up the next steps. But the granite went in beautifully - just one day to install.

    7 days total

    1. Selecting the marble slabs + full payment
    2. Slabs picked up by fabricator
    3. templating
    4. cutting the stone (supervised personally)
    5 + 6 Fabrication
    7 installation

I think it really depends on how busy the shop is. I'm having templating done on Tuesday. They said it would be 3-4 weeks before installation. I'm sure it dosen't take that long just that their shcedule is very busy. They are one of the only ones in my area that do granite abrication.

I don't know what other companies are doing, but our turn around time is 3 to 5 business days from template to install regardless of job size. When we slow down, it's not uncommon for us to install the day after template if it's not clear across the state.

Mine took less than a week.

I have been waiting 5 weeks and it looks like it will be 6-7 before anything can be done!! This is ridiculous! It does not make the installation company look good at all. I think they need to get a new supplier

I was told 4 weeks. It was installed in 3 weeks.
