kitchen layout help please

Hi group, we have been planning this kitchen remodel for many months. I have searched through this forum and the appliances forum for many ideas and have been grateful for all the help offered through these forums on GW.

My wife and I are about to start with the remodel and have some concerns about the layout that the designer did for us. I was hoping to get some ideas before we hand over our money to the cabinet builder. I have some photos of the original ugly kitchen and images of the proposed layout:

We wanted something unique and different and most of this shows uniformity and symmetry. What do others think?

We are planning on maple shaker style inset cabinets.

We are hoping to minimize any regrets or "we should have done this" after the fact. Any and all opinions/comments are welcome.

Thank you!

Wade

I am curious about the little shelf hanging under the upper cabinet between the microwave and window...Unless you have a very important and specific need for it, I wouldn't want to interfere with some decent counterspace, because you don't have much to spare.

Otherwise, I think it looks well thought out and reasonable for the space you have. I'm hoping there is a way you could use that corner instead of just having a void...even if it's just to extend the sink cabinet back there and put in shelves for things you don't have to get to all the time.

Is it just the 2 of you or is this a family kitchen?

Its not bad - these are a few things to think about.

Mini-pantry is probably better off being drawers. A pull out pantry without clear side vision is kinda hard - you wouldn't be able to see down through it and you'll need to sorta back up a bit and lean sideways on each side to see what's in it - if not get down on hands and knees. It might be a little more awkward because of the range - some of them stick out 4-6 inches beyond the cabinet line. If it were mine, I'd be afraid of losing concentration and banging my head into the oven handles.

Might work well to do another pots and pans cabinet - and maybe have an interior only rollout in one of the deep drawers for small items. Not perfect cause you have to get cleaver in identifying canned goods. Another idea is to trim off enough to make a super susan in the corner plus a narrower deep drawer pantry - to take the place of the tiny cabinet around the corner, the ?blind corner base and the mini pantry.

Be careful of placing your dishwasher in front of the place where you're planning on storing the dishes. You might not be happy to wedge yourself into the 1 foot gap or unload to the counter and then close dw and put away dishes. Perhaps consider flipping the 4 drawer and 3 drawer units on the ref wall and storing the dishes in the 3 drawer.

The desk in that particular location = dumping ground. Altho I understand the motivation, it's not what I would prioritize for one fourth of my available cabinet and counter space.

The small shelf was to be sticking out a few inches and not interfere much with the counter space. Looking for some small details to have a unique custom kitchen that doesn't look like some modular cabinets just thrown into the space.
Things I'm starting to see in this layout:
    East Wall:
    dump the mini pantry idea
options...... have to right of oven: vertical storage for cookie sheets etc.., plate drawer, knife drawer, silverware drawer, glasses in cabinet above. But then would have to unload dishwasher onto counter, then shut the dishwasher to put them away... Where else could the dishwasher go? I like the idea of having the plates, silverware etc near the stove.

    South wall:
what is left of DW? mini pantry for spices?
    have trash can under sink

    West wall:
need to define types of drawers, possibly have a 2 can recycling section here.

Communication center/North wall: Have a pantry with plenty of storage located there.

This small kitchen is proving to be one of the most challenging things I've done!
