Saving GW threads for later

Wanted to post this on the Discussions side because I know a lot of folks (myself included) rarely go over to Conversations.

Thanks to carecooks who posted the thread below way back in March, I just discovered Evernote and I am in heaven. What a fabulous way to save all of my favorite GW, esp Kitchen Forum, threads. The "clippings" on GW is limited and you can only clip a single post not a whole thread at once. I always found that frustrating. I used to "save" really important threads to my hard drive but that takes up a lot of space and they're hard to find and open later. I've also bookmarked threads in the past, but bookmarking doesn't guarantee that it will still be there months later or that you won't get the "Oops" message.

Evernote with webclipper is just amazing. Now I don't ever have to worry about losing valuable threads, especially those that disappear into neverland and can't even be located by Google. I sound like spam I know. But I really just wanted to pass this on because I know others out there may appreciate it as much as I do! Wow, I am just in awe.

Thanks again, carecooks!

So I thought I would try this Evernote. I downloaded it and the web clipper but I can't seem to get anything to actually add to it. I got the welcome to evernote clipping so it appears to have installed, but even though I click on the add to evernote when I am on a webpage, nothing seems to be added. What am I missing here? Sorry, I'm not a computer person.

That happened to me too at first. After I downloaded it, I had to sign out and close my browser. When I restarted the browser and then signed back in, it worked.

    jenswrens,

I was looking for another old thread of mine and I saw this. You're welcome. Glad you like Evernote and that it's been a help.

You don't have to have something like this, unless you want it for organizing.

On a mac in Safari go to File>Save As and choose Web Archive as the format.

In Firefox on either platform, File>Save Page As

I don't know what it would be in IE but pretty nearly all browsers will let you save a page for offline browsing without any additional software.

    Writersblock,

I beg to differ with you, but Web Archive just doesn't cut it anymore. You mentioned "unless you want to use it for organizing". I think that organizing is the point. Evernote is an application but it's free. Once you've installed it a little Evernote icon is in your Toolbar. If you're on a page that you want you just click the icon and Evernote makes a new page with everything on it like Web Archive.

Then it gets much better. The following is much, much harder to describe than to do. You can quickly Tag items with references that are important to you. Say that you want to keep a new file on Miele Dishwashers. There is a spot that says Tags. You type in Miele Dishwashers and Evernote automatically makes a folder for Miele Dishwashers. Anytime you want to link something to that folder you tag it Miele Dishwashers. You can even tag a page with a bunch of tags. Let's say that you want a General Folder for Miele but you want separate folders to show prices, places to buy, or whatever. You can have one web page referenced in several folders just by typing in a few words. It is really simple. Oh, and there are so many ways that you can view the things that you've saved. You just have to check it out to see.

But there is one more thing that is really useful. You can access Evernote anywhere. If you use Web Archive you are stuck with finding that page on your computer. Evernote is an application that can be on your computer, your smart phone or your iPad, etc. you can find anything that you've kept anywhere. Plus it's a website so you don't even have to download the application to find things that you've already added. Anywhere there is a computer (Mac or PC) you can get to your stuff. And Evernote automatically syncs everything when you open the application to keep you up-to-date.

I even put notes to myself in Evernote so I can have the info on my iphone when I want it.

To be honest, I don't even use Evernote up to it's full potential. I do really basic stuff but for a big project like a Kitchen Remodel it's a huge help.

    Like jenswrens, I'm smitten.
