Paint Question - painting the support beam

Sorry, I know this is kitchens, but it's very slow on the paint forum.

I have two separate paint colors for the two main areas of the first floor.

The support beam has the kitchen and DR on one side, and the living room on the other. I'm painting the wall that spans the DR and LR the same color. I was planning on painting one side of the beam the Kit/DR color, then the other side the LR color.

1. Is that how I should do it? Would you go with one color for the whole beam? If so, which one? I'm thinking it would be the LR color because it's the more neutral of the two.

2. If you do think you should paint it two colors, what color do you paint it on the bottom?

Sorry if I didn't understand it just right, but the ceiling colors are two different colors? I would paint the beam the color of the ceiling.

You have 2 choices: Paint the "wall" sides of each room the color of the room and the underside the color of the ceiling (that would make that beam 3 colors), or square off where the rooms "end" at the beam, and paint the whole beam the color of the ceiling. Either will look fine, but the 1st choice will look more intentional.

I replied too quickly as the pictures were small, but I went back and enlarged them. What I understand is that your DR and LR shared wall will be the same color along with the wall that the beam actually looks to be like an extension of in the living room. If this is so, it makes sense that the beam be this same color on the LR side. Then it sounds like the kitchen and rest of the DR are another color, so the beam on that side if it looks like part of the wall should be the same color. For the bottom of the beam, I would think to paint it the color of the ceiling.

Paint all 3 sides of the beam, and both sides of the wall that it's sticking out of the same color. You'd need a pretty compelling reason on the kitchen side to do otherwise.

Can you post a picture of that wall from the kitchen side?

If the beam wasn't an extension of that wall, I'd say to just match the ceiling, but it is an extension of that wall, and IMHO it would look funny for it to be a different color than the wall itself. The way to get around this, would be to turn the end of the wall into a sort of pilaster that matches your cabinets. Then visually you have a reason for it to be a different color.
