calling ging9....please help

Ok, I think I need a 12 step program to step away from your kitchen,LOL. I am planning a kitchen remodel myself and recently saw a picture of yours on this site. I love all the elements of your kitchen and would love some more details. I am hoping you won't mind sharing them. I would particularly love to know the color of your cabinets , flooring, backsplash and which appliances you have(Oh my, that is your ENTIRE isn't it?).

It really has been so helpful seeing your kitchen. I was really having a hard time pinpointing what exactly I liked-your kitchen is great inspiration. So, please, please, please, would you share?

Thanks so much!

Nancy

Sorry-sick children so I haven't been checking this weekend. I am trying to get in touch with my painter for the cabinet color. I was told it was frost, but that doesn't seem to be coming up on Benjamin Moore's website. I will have to keep you posted. So here goes:
    Appliances
Refrigerator-Jenn-air panel ready cabinet depth french door
Oven-Dacor-Millenium mcs103s-love it since it is under counter it was only one that didn't have a handle that sticks out.
    Micro/hood-jenn-air with convection
    Cook-top-kenmore induction-LOVE IT

    floor-engineered hardwood-handscraped-Anderson Virginia Vintage-Maple, color heritage

    Countertops-Crema toscana granite

Sink-Rohl Allia 6307 single bown with stainless grid-LOVE IT

    faucet-Mico Simone

backsplash-subway travertine, Robert Andrews xsa-91536-I really liked it since my kitchen is small, it added some interest, but not to busy. It is like a cushioned top, so it looks quilted almost.

Pulls are actually from target and knobs from OSH

I am really happy with everything we did-no regrets. I did a lot of leg work beforehand and had everything ordered and in before we tore out so we were only down for less than two months. That included remodel of kitchen and adjoining family room, dining room and hallway.

I hope this answers your questions. Let me know if you have more. I will try to get back with paint color. Oh and the pics didn't show the panels on fridge which are in now.

Ahhhhaaa..I was wondering about that. Can I pick your brain further? I looove that DW. It is the first thing I planned to buy for my remodel BUT then I went Sears and the rep told me it might not be the best DW for my lifestyle(active family of 5, often run the DW more than once per day). He said it needs to dry overnight and its interior is smallish. You mentioned you have kids too. Has it been a good family dishwasher for you? I am crazy for how quiet it is and love that it has that automatic shut off feature should there be a problem so it won't flood out the kitchen. Like you we will be installing wood floor so I love that.

Thanks for your input. I so much prefer talking to people who have actually used the appliances rather than sales people.

    Thanks again!

Sorry we were at the beach trying to beat the heat.

OK-so, bought the dishwasher a few years ago when our other one died and knew that we would remodel in the near future so we talked to several people and the appliance guy and they all said bosch was a great dishwasher. I wanted something that didn't have buttons on the outside because with young children, I didn't want it on "accidentally". We looked at a Kitchenaid that I really liked the layout of the inside better and had a disposal in the trap to get rid of the food particles, but it wasn't in stock and was a week or two out and we needed one right away.

So...I love how quiet it is and the look from the outside. I am used to how to place dishes in there, but it really is not my first choice in set up. I do feel there is a lot of room, but the peg placement is strange to me. Also, it doesnt have that thing that gets rid of the small food waste, so in order to not have to clean the trap every few loads, I clean my dishes well before I put them in. Also, it recommends using jet dry because it lacks another feature, which I can't remember since It has been awhile since our purchase, but when I use it, it leaves a funky smell and tast to my plastic and silicone utensils etc. So, I don't use it and things dont really seem to have a film.

So in response to your question. I would definately consider all these points before buying Bosch. They may have changed some features since i bought it so you may look into it. I have two young children, 4 and 2. We run the dishwasher daily ar everyother day at the most. It cleans well, but again there are other things that I would consider now that I have used it.

Good luck and let me know what other questions you have.

Wow, really good info. about the Bosch. A little disappointing to hear as I really have my heart set on it for some reason. I guess the quiet factor is so appealing to me since my house is very open and my current diswasher is SO LOUD(she said shouting, lol). I will definitely consider all of that before purchasing though. I like to make all decisions w/eyes wide open.

Ok, now if you don't mind me picking your brain a bit more. I am crazy for your tile backsplash , but when I google Robert Andrews I get nothing. Is it a local designer perhaps?

Thanks again for all your input. You have really turned out to be a very important part of my remodel.

I would definately check with a dealer to see if Bosch has changed any of those elements I wrote about earlier. If they have i would definatley consider it still. Again, it was several years ago when I bought it and they may have changed some things.

The backsplash is from a place here in the SF bay area. I did find a website that shows it at www.richardand sterling.com. but, I remembered seeing a thread a couple weeks ago "Which backsplash accent piece looks best" posted by lmalm53. It is the same mateials that I have or at least looks that way in picture. The post refers to it as 3x6 subway travertine desert cream stone. I googled it and was able to find a website showing it. This may be a better option for you since it may be more easily accessible. It is definatley the lighter color and then the grout we used was linen if I remember correctly. This will fill in the pits of the travertine as well. I love the way it turned out. You may want to find the post I mentioned above because hers is shown before grouting and in a slightly different pattern since they are using accent pieces.

Good luck and let me know what else I can help with, or how things are going once you begin.

Thanks again Ginger. I found the thread you were referencing and took down the info re: the tile. You have been so generous with all your resources. I really appreciate it. We are hoping to sign the contract with the GC this week and get started in the next couple of weeks.

    Thanks again!

    Hi Ging9:

I too loved your kitchen when I saw it on the post about hardwood floor. Please tell me what your cabs are and do you like them? I noticed you are around the City--I'm in the South Bay. Sounds like you painted your cabs--are you happy with that decision?

Thank you. I am so happy to have it all done and am really happy with the results. I am in Gilroy actually and had the cabinets custom by a Eurostyle Cabinet maker in Hollister. It was the best way to make my small kitchen more functional. they all have the blum hinges and soft close drawers, which i love. The cabinets have pull outs inside. My old cabinets had recessed panels and everything got stuck in the recessed area, so this time I picked one with a full raised panel. I love the way they look contemporary, yet still traditional. The doors are from California Doors in the Sheffield L style I believe.

I am so happy with the decision to paint. I knew I wanted hardwood floors and couldn't find a wood stain that would add the contrast and still keep the space light since it is relatively small. My painter laquered them and the finish is very smooth, but almost matte in finish. It is very beautiful and feels so soft to the touch. It is very easy to keep clean even with a 2 and 4 year olds sticky fingers.

Here is a close up of the large drawer fronts.

ging9...I too love you kitchen...it's so warm..I would like to know one thing..does it bother you not having your sink centered under your window? We will have a U shaped kitchen...and either out sink will be off center to the left with the window centered over it...or the sink will be centered in the U...but the window to the left...I'm not sure what to do....but we have a structural beam in the wall and cannot center both the sink and the window in the U...are you happy with yours?

    Thanks!

    ging:

Thanks so much for the info. Your post was a revelation to me. So I'm thinking that all custom cab makers make the box and order the door front separate, is that right? I had no idea!

and this: "My old cabinets had recessed panels and everything got stuck in the recessed area". That was some real good info as I was thinking I was going to go with some sort of recessed panels but I am not a cleaner!

I so love your cabs!!! They are beautiful and easy to clean to boot! Sounds like a perfect world! Thank you for taking that close up of the drawers. (Did I tell you I love them??!!) Do you mind also sharing the name of your contact in Hollister and the color of your cabs when you get a moment?

    TIA!

slc2053-thanks for the compliments. My sink was already slightly off center before the remodel, so moving it over another few inches in order to get a SS in the corner was a no brainer. I needed the kitchen to be more functional, so having the sink off center didn't keep me up at night. I love my new kitchen and don't regret the decision to move the sink over at all. No one has ever said anything about it,and even if they did, I know I made the right decision.

kandt-I soo love my cabinets too!!! I believe most custom cabinet makers are this way. At least the three I got bids from all were getting their doors from somewhere else and they made the boxes and put it all together. The place I got the cabs from is Eric VonUrff's Eurostyle Cabinets, Eric is the owner and the gentleman I dealt with. He was great and I would highly recommend him. We had no problems with the cabinets at all, and we did some tricky things in order to maximize the space.

As for the old recess areas getting gunky, well with two little ones that like to help cook, things get spilled down the front and then pooled in the recess. My new ones they just slide down the front, but much easier to clean. Rarely I get some in the deep groove, but a q-tip is the perfect size to clean with. Again, that rarely happens though.

So-for the color-I still haven't been able to get a hold of the painter. He had told me that it was BM Frost, but it doesn't show up on their website as an option. He has been painting for a long time, so it may be an old color. He recommended it since it is still fairly white, but a little warmer. I was very happy with the suggestion. I will try again today and see if I can get a response from him.

Thanks for all the good compliments!!

Thanks again Ginger! You have been so generous with your contact info!

I'll be looking for the info on the paint when I return from vacation.

I'll be 10 days without internet access--how will I survive without my GW fix???

kandt-hope you are having fun on the vacation. I finally talked to my painter and he said the color is frost from kelly moore. He uses the color, but BM paint. For the cabs he uses a special paint for the laquer(sp?). The color is the same just color matched, it is so pretty and creamy. I hope this helps. If you need a painter-he is great.
