Benjamin Moore Advance-Satin or High Gloss?

Hi there,

I have a couple of cabinets to be painted and have decided to DYI rather than send them out to be sprayed...

I've decided on using BM Advance paint as from what I understand, provides a 'hard' finish showing few brush strokes.

For those that have used it, are you happy with it?

Also, any recommendations for using Satin rather than High-Gloss finish for furniture? (doesn't come in semi-gloss which I probably would've chosen)

Thanks!

I saw a piece of trim painted with a .50 chip brush (the cheapest kind possible) that had *no* brush strokes showing, and felt like a sprayed-on lacquered hard coating. Amazing. I'm definitely using it for my next trim painting needs. The salesman said that as long as you don't try to build too much with one coat, you're fine. It will sag if you put it on too thick. Two thin coats will be wonderful. That's what I used to do with Satin Impervo, so it's not a change for me.

    Thank you both!

oldhouse...my mistake on finishes! I'm in Canada as well and you're absolutely right, it's Pearl-not Satin.

Thinking Pearl (not Satin:)) might be best as high-gloss could be too shiney.(the BM store I was in also only had Pearl in stock)

I just finished using Advance to hand paint my kitchen cabinets. I used both a brush and a roller and they look professionally painted. The only thing I would advise is making sure the area where you are painting is dust-free. I took my doors off and painted them in my unfinished basement and a few bits of lint landed on them while they were wet. They aren't really visible but they are the only thing that kept the finish from looking flawless.

I just bought a gallon and have only used it on 3 8 ft sections of baseboard trim so far, but I obviously have plans to do more. Looks good. It was slow drying, but it's pretty humid outside today.

supergrrl7 & lascatx...Did you both use the Pearl finish as well? Seems to be lots of postive comments on this paint...just need to finalize the sheen/finish now.
Perhaps this paint is similiar to the old BM Melamine paint. It was sticky to work with, but did result in a nice smooth finish.

(sorry...meant to say that concern with high-gloss was that it would be too shiny...not shiney. Oops...can I blame lack of sleep, lol)

I'm in the States and used the Satin. I like the hard, smooth, soft luster finish, but you definitely have to brush once and leave it alone. I had it tinted to Linen White and was painting preprimed molding. I was surprised by the lack of coverage with a brush and tried to apply it a little too thick. It sagged and ran, and if I tried to go back and brush out a previous spot, it made a mess. I had better application results with a foam roller.

I'm rather surprised that Lascatx experienced slow drying because I felt it had very little workable time. But it did have a nice finish. I plan to try it again with an ocher yellow and see if I get better coverage than with the white.

I'd sure like to see some pictures of what all of you have been painting. Sounds like a great product.

I used Advance and found it to have a better open time than the Aura I've used in the past.
Satin is recommended for cabinets since Advance Satin is closer to a semi than the average satin.
I had mine also mixed in linen white but without the yellow colorant.
I find it easier to not fuss so much with any paint and just leave it to do it's self-leveling thing.
Also, seek the optimal temp. to do your painting in.

I am using the high gloss on trim. I would use satin on cabinets.

I did some other trim he day before, but I wasn't the one who painted these three pieces. It is possible the paint went on a bit too thick, but the humidity reading outside is 91% (drought doesn't mean the air is always dry) and we were painting the trim outdoors before cutting and installing. In doors wan't an option with floors being installed and two dogs trying to check out everything inside - too much dust and hair for trim work.

Still interested in the Advance satin vs semi-gloss for kitchen cabinets debate. Anyone with pictures or opinions?

In the past I used BM Melamine for kitchen cupboards and it was fantastic and looked sprayed. I would call the finish "satin" or low gloss. Apparently they don't make it anymore so for a wood hutch I was directed to Advance "pearl" finish. Unfortunately this paint has a much higher gloss to it and doesn't look nearly as good as the old melamine. I tried to upload a photo but could not do so.

We ended up using the BM Advance Primer and BM Advance Satin and love how it all turned out. Color: Cloud White

I plan on painting my interior doors, base moulding and moulding around the doors. I plan on purchasing BM ADVANCED Interior Alkyd but I'm not sure if the finish should be different for the door and moulding. Should I use a semigloss finish on the moulding and a satin on the doors or the same on both? If so the which finish? Does the Satin have a slight shine to it? The color will be an off white. The house was built in 1999 and the paint as sprayed on both molding and doors and in the daylight I can see a slight difference in the sheen. Thanks for the help in advance

I'm aware this is an old thread but I am in the same boat here in the states. I am not sure if I should use Satin or Semi Gloss in the Advance product for trim. Our walls and trim will be the same color as we are going for a modern look. I would love your advice on what you have done, pictures would be great as well.

Looking for the same answer...BM Advanced Satin vs Semigloss

I would go with satin. I did my kitchen in BM Advance Satin in Simply White and it’s much glossier than expected, and much glosser than other brands. BM Advance Satin is as glossy as semi gloss for most other brands. I actually wish it was more matte.

I agree that the BM satin has much of a glossy look than other brands. I have seen many interior designers select matte for cabinets and feel it looks much better.
