My kitchen update....

I apologize for the bad quality of the photos & the length of the post. Please hang with me - I need you, I need you!!

Since I have a few issues I will # them...

1. Painted an old Duron color Ardmore green - actually had 2 gallons from previous house. I really like the color alot with the floors, tile, & cabinets.

2. Used an enhancer/sealer on tile - Do you see any improvement? I tried to take the cheapest route 1st to see if it made any difference.

After enhancer

Before enhancer

3. Window treatments?? The windows/doors face west & is rather brutal in the summer. We installed window film & it does make a difference - privacy?? would be nice sometimes.

Roman shades out of fabric or get cellular shades & cover stack with moulding(cheap route) Do you think the room needs more fabric?

4. Fabric choices....club chair cushions will be redone in pheasant fabric with checked piping- body of chair will remain the same. I am making upholstered benches for the sides of the table with the same fabrics. (fabrics not this bright irl)

{{!gwi}}

The table between the 2 club chairs will be cut down to a higher coffee table height. People can eat there when I need overflow seating.

{{!gwi}}

Thinking the buffet & barstools will be painted black or a dark chocolatey black/brown - any color suggestions?

{{!gwi}}

I am making slow progress....painting took forever for me. I went back over all my white trim - new wood really soaks up paint & dirty dogs don't help either:)

Gosh, these pics are bad - let me see if I can get a better one - be back.....

I appreciate any thoughts you may have.

Smiles:)

Planning on painting round table base same as barstools/buffet. Gotta paint around the tv niche (plan on covering that with some old shutters or something...to slide to the sides like on old barns) I need 3 strong men to remove that tv - yikes!

Now, I see better in this pic - still strongly dislike the tile:(

Well -- I really LOVE the painted kitchen! Very very charming!

LOVE your ideas for painting the barstools and the buffet to black -- perhaps rubbed a bit to show wood -- and then simply cover the exposed wood with a bit of dark brown shoepolish. I used simply American Traditions in satin black -- cheap and cheerful -- from Walmart on my kitchen barstools and island! I did mine in spray paint -- lots of very light coats -- and several light coats of poly too.

The fabric for the chair and the future benches is gorgeous! So elegant!

As for the windows -- we went with 2-inch white faux wood blinds -- which seems to work really well with the white moldings. As for privacy and sun-control (our house faces south and is located in Dallas!) -- the blinds work very well! But between the choices of fabric roman-shades and cellular blinds -- I vote for the more elegant roman blinds! But with dogs -- perhaps the blinds would be easier to vaccum clean?? I really don't know -- this is JUST a thought!!

I really like your kitchen. Are those cannisters from JC Penney? I had my eye on them since I have the light colored granite as well, they look good together. I don't understand how you're going to lower that round table between the club chairs. It's a good idea, but with that base I don't know how you're going to execute it. Good luck! P.S. I'm the last person to consult with for advice on drapes or fabric!

I think those bar stools would look cool that reddish-pink color. You have so much green in there it would be nice to have a pop of it's complimentary color.

Have you considered just removing all but the first row of the small section of tile from the wall by the coffee maker? I think this would still give you a finished look, but be more attractive. If after making this change, you still don't like the color, then you'll know you to put a new backsplash on the to-do list!

I feel your pain, I'm not too happy with my backsplash either!

BTW, I'm a long time lurker, but I think this is my first post on the decorating forum.

I should have added that I think your kitchen (and the rest of your house) is lovely.

Brody, I am so glad you posted!! Hope you continue - yes, good idea about removing some of the tile. I am all for doing least expensive thing 1st & move on. But I am willing to scrap the whole backsplash & really think I should. And thanks:)

The barstools would be interesting a rusty red color - I was going to do black.

Neesie, those canisters came from a little store here in town. Does JC Penney have some? I have very little storage & love having my canisters. DH said he could cut that table down - well see:)

Jan, I think you are right about the roman shades. Darn, I really really need to learn to sew. I would like the blinds, too but worry about my main door being abused so badly by rugrats in the summer. The blinds always come lose on the bottom & sway!!

So, I really don't know what to do for a backsplash. I went to a better tile showroom & she suggested the ivory like I have? Maybe leave the medallions & do original plan of travertine subways in ivory?

    I don't know, I am boring myself!!

The only place the tile really jumps out is on that wall that sits at a right angle to your coffeemaker. If you could remove the tile from that wall completely, even under the cabinet, I think that would be a huge improvement. In the rest of the spaces, the tile looks fine to me. And even if not, you have the cabinets above and things on your counter that distract your eye from it. Your paint color looks great and I love the two chairs and small table in front of the fireplace. Your house is coming together beautifully.

Hi Johna! Long time no see! I haven't been around much lately. I have gotten on a little recently and saw your post. First, I love the green in your kitchen - looks great! It sounds like you just really need to tear out the backsplash and start over or you probably won't be happy. I have similar colors in my kitchen with Kashmir Gold granite. I looked for a long time for a backsplash that didn't clash. I finally found Jeruselum Gold limestone that had the right golden undertones and not the pink/taupe undertones. I also strongly considered an ivory crackle subway tile that sometimes I wonder if I should have gone with. But overall I am happy with it and it blends in nicely which is what I wanted, but is still nice looking on its own (IMO). Here are a few pics to give you an idea. I used some small accent tiles that are in the same color but have a different finish/texture which again is what I wanted so they didn't stand out too much. Good luck. Oh, and I think painting the stools black would look great. Hope you are having fun!

First of all the green looks scrumptous!! Looks great with the wood as I thought it might. I do agree about removing the tile so it is in a line with the vertical line of the cabinets. Hope you understand that. BUT, before you start chipping away at the tile, paint a poster board with the green of the walls, big enough to mimick what the wall would like like without the tile in that area. stand back, take a pic and look at it. It will be the best representation of what it will look like without the tile in that area. Love everything so far!

Love the green. It really shows off your cabinets. I never could quite get why you did not like them. I do agree the backspash it not my favorite, but at the same time only you can decide it it's bad enought to tear out. I also agree the side splash is the most glaring, however, before you go tearing it out there may be very valid reasons that it was put there--such as an out of plumb wall. We had so many out of plumb walls in our remodel and ran into problems with getting a tight fit with the countertops so I have tile in places I did not plan for. If you do decide to tear it out, I think you will need to leave the bottom row of tile. Make sure whoever does the work is very careful with their tools around your lovely granite!

I love the pheasant fabric and it looks perfect with your wall color. I'm not so sure about the three fabrics all on the same chair though--but perhaps it's just me and my lack of vision.

Lastly, love the idea of the red chairs and sawing down the round table.

What is that status of the door? I notice the latch is still on the right.

Before you start painting, go to this site and take alook at some of the different finishes for furniture. (I bought the gilding kit at the Country Living Fair in October). I could definately see something like this in your kitchen. Perhaps the buffet painted in black with a red rubthrough? There are so many possibilities. Enjoy!

Hi Johna, I love your kitchen. The hardwood floors are beautiful. I love the kitchen cabinets and the stainless steel appliances. Your counter tops are very nice and those canisters are perfect for your kitchen. I like the green color in the kitchen. I would deepen up the color on those cute bar chairs but even s they are, they are nice. The back-splash actually is not so bad but if your budget allows, I think a neutral ivory color would be nice. You can even just try removing it off the wall by the coffee pot to see if it helps you not mind the back-splash.

    Thanks for sharing.

Jjam, Long time no see. Hope your doing well.

Polkadots!! Long time no see, too. I am trying to pawn my fabric off on Val now - hee hee. Have you made any progress in your great room? Didn't you order some chairs? Got pics? Your backsplash looks great. And your kitchen is so clean and uncluttered. Very pretty.

The doors, Val, are gonna be changed. We don't use that door much during the fall/winter since we are not swimming so it has been put lower on the list(long list!!)

    Kmcg,
that paint looks cool. I am planning on doing black & let the green rub thru & go down to the wood in some spots & hit it with gel stain. The wine rack will be left green - mainly b/c I am too lazy to paint it. I already bought black paint today & have to use oil based - yuck.

Neesie, those aren't the same but are very cute. Get you some - great price, too.

Lynn, have you made a decision about your floors?

Thank you all for your thoughts. I am pondering ....but you know when you walk in and see something for the 1st time & your gut drops - that is what happened when I saw the backsplash for the 1st time.

So, any ideas about what to use for backsplash? Crackled ivory subways, travertine subways, beadboard to match cabinets, beadboard to match trim, copper sheets. I kinda wish I could just paint back there.

    Smiles:)

You have a plan for the chairs and it sounds great! That's what I was talking about. Letting the color underneath rub through. I know someone mentioned this before, but the small tile over the sink looks so nice I would find out more about that color. I'm sure it comes in different sizes. It seems the right tone for the granite, unless it looks different irl. I would start there.

I was just over at the 'other' home decorating site looking at a post about backsplashes. Someone had used sheet copper as a backsplash. Simple, affordable and pretty!

    Kmcg,
Can you share(is it allowed) what other site you are talking about?
I would love to see it. I have a counter in my laundry room I am planning on using copper on but that one is way down on the list!!
