Final Kitchen design decision- please help

Hi

It is decision time on my kitchen layout/kitchen appliances.

I have had a few kitchen designs complete now but I still can't decide on the placement of my double ovens. The original plan has the double oven by the 36inch cook top. For some reason, I do not like the look of the big silver appliance being so obvious in a focal part of the kitchen. I know it makes the most sense there but I do have to say aesthetics slightly outweigh functionality for me.

Having said that, below are the options I am considering. i would appreciate any advice you may have.

1. double oven to the left of the kitchen entrance (coming in from the mudroom); refrigerator to the right.

2. Leave double oven as is, next to the stove. I will get over the prominence of the silver.

3. shrink pantry so that I can fit both double oven and refrigerator right next to it. If I were to do this, the pantry would become 4x4 angled. I would leave 37 inches for the fridge space (36 inch fridge + 1 inch panel) and 33 inches for double oven (30 inch+3inch for cabinet). I would also have the 3 foot opening. I would literally be using every single inch of this space that shares a wall with the mudroom. Not sure If it will look too obviously tight.

Please note that with all of the above options I will have eliminated island seating (other than perhaps at the very end- towards the nook. I will also have a sink added across from the cooktop.

I would truly appreciate your help in this major decision as I just have to make one now.

Also, is there a typical size for a pantry door? mine is 2ft 6 inches but it seems like a lot of the ones I have seen are 24 inches.

Thanks!!!

I can't tell you what will work best for you but I can tell you what I would do. I would not be happy with the core of my kitchen on opposite sides of an island. I would put the fridge on the end of the cabinet run, next to the dishwasher.

I would leave the cooktop where it is.

In my kitchen, I put one oven in the island and the other oven against the wall with the microwave in a cubby with nesting doors above. That might be a way for you to break up the look of the double stacked ovens.

Thanks Annie. I didn't even consider fridge next to dishwasher as option. Since we are not doing flush fridge and I prefer more cabinets on that wall. I probably will not go down that route. I so like your idea of the microwave/double oven combo with other oven in the island though!

I would swap the fridge and double oven. That way, your fridge is closer to your main cooking area (not across the island from it) and people can still access it without interrupting somebody cooking at the range or at the sink. The issue you may run into with this is the depth since your wall ovens appear to be about 3 inches deeper than your fridge. I would definitely keep your door swing the way it is if you are going to swap them as well. I would NOT want the pantry door swing interfering with the fridge door swing: I would rather interfere with the wall oven doors, it will be used a lot less than the fridge.

I probably wouldn't put the fridge next to the dishwasher as this might block the view to the window. Have you thought about "killing" the corner where the pantry is with a 27x27 vertical chase, then put the fridge to the right of the chase and a large cabinetry pantry to the left? The cooktop could be a range and second oven in the island. Then make the range a great focal point from the family room. This gives the range a bit more breathing room and the fridge is located in a better spot away from the seating. I'm not a big fan of all the wasted space in those corner pantries, but I know some people love 'em. That's my 2 cents.

This is just as an illustration of another way to kill the corner pantry by moving the mudroom door to a more convenient place (as far as the kitchen is concerned). It also shows the primary benefit of a three working sided island fat enough for two stools on the end.

Your drawing is showing a counter depth refrigerator. In the above drawing, a full sized ref (allow for 36" of depth) could be countersunk into the wall shared with the mudroom. Whether it goes ref-pantry or pantry-ref is at your choice. The nubbin by the ref need not exist - I was thinking about a msg area or some such thing.

You might have a little more room in your aisles than the impression formed by this drawing. I would adjust those so the cooktop was closer to the island and further from the dishwasher. One of the differences with tall tub dishwashers is that the doors stick further out into the aisle - so I would be sure to have a 48" aisle between the cleanup sink and the island.

Again, just as an idea, I might put a drawer micro on the side of the island near the ref.

Wow. Some really good ideas that none of the kitchen designers have offered up. If I were to do 36 range and single oven in island, what side would it make sense for the oven to be in? Side towards sink? Could I still fit the microwave in the island. , perhaps towards oven.

Possibility of fridge next to cooktop is nice idea as well especially if I can panel it but I worry abOut losing too much counter space in valuable part of kitchen.

Well I removed the angle pantry to allow for cooktop to be centered, creating focal point for room.
But now I am having doubts about this decision since corners are difficult. What is a vertical chase? Also, what are thoughts on angled double oven? Thanks!!,
