Newbie needs decorating help

I wondered if I could get some ideas of how to fix my bathroom!

We are low on cash at the moment but I want to improve our truly dated bathroom. I have started to rip up our only bathroom( I know, bad idea) but am lost on what colours to paint.

Currently there is an almond tub surround(all one piece tub and walls no room for a curtain outside the tub) and an almond toilet with a damaged faux marble countertop in almond/white swirl with a molded sink.

There is a vinyl white replacement window that faces east in the bathroom. The floor is pale beige vinyl sheet flooring with a 10" X 10" tile pattern.

The vanity is a honey coloured wood cabinet with doors that have that octagonal shape fake wicker pattern on the front. I have painted two coats of primer on the cabinets, the trim and the cabinet doors so far.

Above the vanity is a large old medicine cabinet with three mirrors that open to the inside and have 3 round lightbulbs above which give the room its only light. The edges of the medicine cabinet are paintable.

I have ideas to do white beadboard(the panels) 48" high around the small bathroom because I would only need 2 sheets with lots left over.

Not including the tub(which is here to stay being all one piece) the floor area is exactly 5' X 5'.

I am wondering if it will look bad to paint the beadboard white(not stark white) and the top of the walls in a warm toned green.

We are replacing the counter and sink because of the damage and I am unsure of the colour/type of counter & sink to purchase.

What colour should the vanity and beadboard be? Or should I just paint the entire wall and forget about beadboard? What is a good white that I can use here for the trim that will carry throughout the house when we get to the rest of it?

What are some nice colours? I tend to gravitate towards greens, taupes, white, grey, yellow.

Any ideas(or pics) would be lovely.

A picture says a thousand words, can you post one?

Yes, can you post a picture of your room?

If the room is only 5'x5', you could start with the floor. To re-do it in vinyl would be very inexpensive and if you find colors you like, you can then use those on your cabinet and countertop/sink. If you have a re-use center in your area that sells small end-lots of tile, you could inexpensively tile it, too.

When you say that there's a tub surround but no room for a shower curtain outside the tub, how do you use it now? I mean, is there a shower curtain liner that's always tucked into the tub during showers?

Thanks for the replies. I have photos but I cannot for the life of me find my camera cord to plug into the computer to download them. I will continue looking so I can post some photos.

Our tub has a curtain rod inside the tub and therefore the curtain needs to be tucked in.

I also have the almond one piece tub surround & toilet from when we built in 1984! I painted the room the same color as the fixtures so they would blend in rather than stand out. And I too have my curtain rod (tension rod) mounted on the tub with a separate liner. The liner goes in the tub; the curtain hangs outside the tub.

I finally figured out how to upload an album onto photobucket!

I have jumped the gun and purchased paint but I am already second guessing my choices as they sit there in the can. I bought Valspar "Betsy's Linen" for the trim and Valspar "Willow Wind" a greenish colour for the upper walls. I don't have a clue why I bought these other than I was put under a spell at the paint chip display.

I really want beadboard on the bottom of the walls for ease of cleaning. I want it to carry 48" up the wall and carry behind the toilet and vanity(new counter ideas needed). The old medicine cabinet needs to go and the new beadboard will go up to the bottom of the existing medicine cabinet. My hubby looked inside the light part in the medicine cabinet and says there is a spot for one light behind it. There is no other light in the bathroom. There is a fan in the middle of the ceiling that needs a new cover, maybe there are combination light/fans that could provide additional light?

I need ideas if anyone can help me? Would white(or off-white cabinets and/or beadboard be too jarring with the almond tub and toilet? What sink and counter could I get?

What would you do(in a cost effective way) in here?

When you say low budget are you talking $100 or $500 or more? The reason I ask is that you can replace the vanity and medicine cabinet and light for under $500. I lucked out and did a rental property I have with things I found at Home Depot in their clearance section. $200 for vanity, light and medicine cabinet. The only thing I had to do to them was change the hardware on the vanity to brushed stainless to match the room. As for the counter top, find a granite fabricator and ask about leftover granite or solid surface material. They will often cut it for you at very inexpensive rates as they have no use for these smaller pieces.

From personal experience, I've used Valspar paint in 3 rooms recently and the paint after being applied matched the chips exactly. So if you like what you see on the chips, you should be OK with the paint choices.

I love beadboard in bathrooms and think the white beadboard really brightens up the room. Don't worry too much about lighting until after you've picked out a new light. The type of lighting you've had in there really doesn't give off enough light and it's something you can keep in mind when selecting the new lighting. There are some great deals online for lighting, I just did 3 bathrooms for under $160, all were on sale and found an online coupon for an additional 30% off on LampsPlus. The same lights, 2 of them were almost twice as much as big box stores locally. It's easy to save money if you take your time and look around. Check Ebay and CL, too. I've had friends who found great deals on CL due to the unfortunate situations people find themselves in due to our economy. Have fun and good luck with the remodeling!

Thanks for the help! When I said low budget, I meant regular finishes, no granite counters or anything like that, and we cannot rip out the tub or do major renovations.

I need colour/finish ideas for flooring, the counter, trim walls, vanity cupboards etc. I am so clueless about what will go with almond. I really wanted a white bathroom with white cabinets but the almond is here to stay.

    What colour combinations work?

You could do a darker shade of almond for the cabinet and do the trim and beadboard with white. As for the countertop, don't rule out the scrap granite. My cousin did her powder room for $135. That was the granite plus the cut for the sink. I'd do the countertop in shades of cream, white, and variations of both from light to dark.

As for the floor, try 12 inch square ceramic tile in a light tan or something that looks like marble or limestone. Your bathroom is small enough that tile at roughly $1 to $1.50 each will be inexpensive. It is not that difficult to do and if you have the time, you can take free classes at either HD or Lowe's to learn how to lay tile. I did it myself for a bathroom and it took me about four hours total after going to the classes to do a 6 x 8 area. Or you can hire someone to do it.

I really wouldn't worry about the color of the tub, hang a tension rod above it or inside of it and get a great shower curtain that you leave closed. Nobody will focus on the color of the tub, they'll see the great job you did on the rest of the remodeling.

As for the color you chose for the wall, It came up more grey than green on my monitor. Valspar paint, in my experience, has dried the same as the paint chip so if you like the color on there, you should be happy with it. I think most shades of green would look great with the colors I mentioned above.
