Carpet Trends

I'm looking to replace berber carpeting that has been here since po's built the house in 2005. The carpeting is on a flight of stairs, a loft area & in the two bedrooms upstairs. The loft is our family room, one bedroom is a nursery & I'm hoping to have a 2nd baby's room in the next few years ;-) The stairs & family room get a lot of use as well as my daughter's nursery. I'm looking for something that is neutral, light in color and will do well with all of the baby's chaos & our 50lb dog. LOL. The berber hides stains but gets pulls/snags so I don't think I want it again. My hubby likes those shag styles but are they/were they a fad? I like that style also but I don't want it to look outdated in a few years. Also, not sure how a shag style would wear on the stairs? Any suggestions? Who loves their rug and what do you have?

Are you referring to frieze? If so I've had it for many years. Like any carpet you have to look to see how thick it is; you shouldn't be able to see the backing between the strands. I love mine, and yes it does wear extremely well.

yes! the frieze! I always call it a shag rug lol! is yours multi-color or single? glad to hear it wears well. how is it to vacuum? does it get dusty? I think out of all styles its my favorite for sure, I know its what hubby likes best.

I think very short dense cut piles are slso very durable. They are sometimes referred to as velvet cut. The only thing that some people do not like about them is that they are not non directional like a frieze. They have a direction just like an oriental rug does with a light side and a dark side.

Frieze here since 2006 on the stairs and upper level, love it!! It's soft to walk on, cleans easily and is wonderful!!

Instead of replacing carpet every 7 years, have you looked at replacing it with hardwood floors?

Replacing carpet every 7 years??? Why?/ Are you buying cheap or "trendy" stuff?
I have a short plush on my stairs and hall....since....maybe 2000? It's fine....not worn....doesn't look "dated" what ever that means, unless you have gone with a pattern or a shag....
Good quality classic....velvet, short pile or medium pile....it's good forever.
BUT....don't buy "lavender bower" or country cream yellow....but a "bishop's grey" should be good....but maybe not!
Good quality and not a "trendy" weave or color and you won't be replacing it in 7 years.
    Really??? 7 years???

My friend has 25 year old thick, vevety plush throughout most of her 4k sq. ft. home, imcludimg stairs. I believe it's nylon. It has seen children,
, teens, toddlers and dogs. The most amazing to me are the areas that are frequently traveled paths: family room to kitchen, etc. It is spotless and shows no wear whatsoever......and they are a 'shoes on ' family. Wish she remembered the details, but not relevant after all these years, i suppose. The color is a medium taupe.

Wow - strong opinion about the OPs need to replace carpet after 7 years. She stated that the PO put it in and it wasn't wearing well. I guess we should assume that this is why she is looking into having it replaced.

I think that is why she is seeking what will look/wear nice. Seems like a valid question to me.

The only thing I'd avoid on a stair runner would be a shag/frieze style with long strands -- there's a danger of them matting down over time and getting slippery on the edges of the treads. Other than that I think the sky's the limit.

The average life cycle of carpet is approximately seven years according to some data.

I'm replacing the carpet because I'm tired of living with a carpet I didn't pick, do not love and it's starting to look worn especially because of the pulls. When we moved in 3 years ago it was at the bottom of our list to replace but now it's time :-) I would love hardwood but it is not in the budget for us. If I knew we would be staying here long term I might be swayed to spend the $ anyway but I don't know how long we will be here - which is the reason I mentioned picking something in style that will stay in style. I'd hate to spend $ on carpet that might be outdated in a few years especially if we want to sell.

I like the frieze style & over the last few years have seen it in many home models and I still see it in models - but I don't know if it is losing its appeal or is still very popular. I'm not really into carpets so I don't know lol

When you guys say thick/short/medium pile does it leave lines when you vacuum? Or footprints? I had carpeting like that and it drove me crazy. I would vacuum perfect lines and then I would hate to walk on it lol! I want to avoid that, which is why I think a frieze would be better. I need something that won't get really worn looking with age, will be easy to clean even if it's very light in color, you know basically kid and pet friendly. If I didn't have the dog I might consider berber again because that hides spills & dirt so well, almost too well! But the pulls annoy me and its starting to get ratty looking, my guess is builder put in a cheaper grade.

If anyone has pictures that would be great.
