Too busy?

I am feeling that all this is way too busy around my bed. But what should go & what should stay? I could use some of the art/accessories in my upstairs guest bath.

Thanks for your opinions - good & bad. I can take it.

(Excuse my Tae kwon do uniform on bed - ooops)

Smiles:)

Actually, I don't think it's too busy. There is quite a bit to look at, but the tables beside your bed are large, and can handle it all, IMO. Some of that stuff you absolutely need (alarm clock, remote control), and the framed photos are undoubtedly there for sentimental reasons, which is never a bad thing! I think it all looks very nice.

    Very pretty room.

Johnatemp I thought it was a magazine clipping! I think it's beautiful!

Nothing should go (ok maybe the uniform). It's perfect. I absolutely hate art just floating all by itself on a big wall. Yours is placed perfectly and is in scale with the room. I love the table tops....don't change a thing!

I would center the lamps on the tables or at least move them over one third. Obviously that means the wall art behind the stands has to come down and be put somewhere else. You need the phone and clock on the bed side stands, (unless you want to drill holes in the back of the stands and keep them in the drawers, which I don't think you want to do).

The photos have meaning and I'm sure you wish to keep them. Maybe edit out ones that you are tired of and just keep two or three ? Or rotate photos seasonally? There is already so much framed art on the walls in the room. Put the photos on the stands in matching frames, or at least something that coordinates so they look cohesive and group them rather than spreading them across the whole stand. Don't use ornate gold frames for your photos as they compete with the lamps. I would keep the phone and the clock on the same side together rather that spreading them out, and just put one large photo on that side with them. Then one the other stand put on of the larger size photos together with a medium one.

Is there another place to put the plant? Plants potted in dirt never look right placed next to the bed.

Overall it is nice room already, and there is nothing horribly wrong with it as it is.

I would imagine the lamps aren't centered, because they're used to read by. Am I correct?

I don't think anything needs to go. It looks lovely and I assume that you LIKE all of those things since you put them there. My Mom's decor is similar and I always admire her "stuff". I don't have the knack for accessorizing.

The painting on the wall on the left seems out of scale to the oval one one the right, which is also too low. The lamps make such a strong statement that perhaps you could dispense with having any wall art near them. Try removing the two and just keep the two pictures over the bed. Your room overall is very lovely.

I'm big on streamlining, but the tabletop accessories are not overdone. I like the unexpected look of the picture and round thing (can't make it out) on the walls directly above the nightstands.

I might rethink the centered pillow, maybe switch it out for a different shape and smaller, in an accent color. But too busy? No, not even close.

What a beautiful room. I think you need to remove the pictures over the bed or at least move them up a little. I love everything else.

Beautiful, beautiful. My eye goes to the pictures over the bed first but I can't suggest putting anything else there. You have surrounded yourself with your pleasures in life. Peace out!

I don't think the tables are too busy, because I love the room.

But since you seemed concerned about a sense of "too much" I began really staring at the picture for awhile.

I'm wondering if the tablescapes are just too "vertically crowded" and too low when compared to the bedposts and the artwork on the adjoining wall.

Could you get different size photo frames that would vary more in height? I'm thinking, too,if you raised the artwork up to a couple of inches higher than the 2 pictures behind the bed that all of the table items would reflect the impressive size of your furniture by being taller than the actual height of the nightstands.

But having said that, if you just left everything the way it is you'd still have a beautiful room.

I so agree with Monablair, first impression is just beautiful, peaceful and nicely done...

If you stare at it long enough you could probably find something to tweak, but why bother?!

Your room is quite beautiful as it is. If you feel it's too busy for you try removing the picture and round piece over your nightstands. Thin out the items on your nightstands then take another picture. I've found taking a picture of your rooms when you move things around helps to see what's missing or what needs improvement. It helps to see the room whole versus standing in it looking at every item piece by piece.

Try the photos in matching frames -- then the viewers' eye will tend to eliminate them.

Remove the plant. Or find a more delicate white orchid in a pretty pot or even a plain black one to blend in a bit more.

    Pretty room!

Loving the room too. Not too busy at all. The only suggestion I might make is that the picture above the table on the left has a very heavy frame. Much heavier even than the ones over the bed. If you used a lighter/narrower frame if might lighten the look?

Johnatemp, I find the room quite serene, tranquil & inviting. Not too busy at all. Don't change a thing!

Of course, the Tae kwon do uniform at the foot of the bed tells us a different story! We know now that under that quiet exterior there is a more aggressive side! LOL!

I think it's cozy, not too busy. If I were going to remove anything, I'd remove the plant and replace the big center pillow with something a bit smaller.

Lovely room. I am chiming in to say I don't think it's too busy at all.

Urf. Not busy at all. Want to come do my room? I have so very little as far as accessories that it doesn't even feel like a personal space! Yours is just lovely.

It is your bedroom - personal space - I like what you have done and the lamps are most useful where they are. The only thing I'm not wild about is the bland artwork over your bed and the bland pillow shams as well as the too-small oval picture over the right chest - other than that - I love it.

It's not too busy. The stuff on both nightstands is perfect.
Something is a little off with the pictures over the bed. too far apart.. too low. too small .. something.
Instead of 2 smaller pictures I wonder what one BIG rectangle picture would look like. Something that commands the attention first. as it is now.. your eye goes first to the decor on the nightstands. I feel like since the artwork over the bed is in the middle and *showcased* it needs to be the showcase somehow.
That is if you *have* to tweak at all because it's minor. But I don't think anything needs to removed at all from the sides

johnatemp, I love your bedroom and find it peaceful and interesting and pretty but not too busy. I need some pictures in my bedroom.

Johnatemp, your bedroom is beautiful. It tells a story, as it should, about the people who occupy the space. It is comfortable, warm and inviting. You have so much going on now with all you are doing downstairs that you might be looking to just edit a little. The ONLY thing I would bother with is to move the two pics over the bed to behind the night stands and move the heavier pic on the left to over the bed. Presto chango!

    Hi all!

Wow! All the responses...I am amazed. I don't have time right now to digest - I did make a minor change & will post pics tomorrow.
I am cooking pheasant for the !st time ever for a big group of people tonight. Wish me luck;)

Thanks for your compliments. They mean a whole bunch to me.

    Smiles:)

Painting walls, painting furniture, tweaking rooms and COOKING PHEASANT for tonight? ....Can you please tell me what you and Reno are taking? ;)
Take the time to enjoy your night with good food and good friends, you deserve it!

Not too busy at all! I like *my* personal space full of the things I love as it creates a coziness in the room. I have the same bed. Love the nightstand on the left~is it an antique?

Would you mind sharing where you purchased the lamps. Are they Seahorses, or a swirly decoration? It's hard for me to tell. TIA

Two things immediately hit me: 1) the plant may be too fussy. I agree with the poster that said to try something like an orchid. The plant's lines are very similar to the curles in the lamps. 2) The other is that perhaps the paintings above the bed could be a little closer to each other. Both were things mentioned previously. Your room is lovely!

I think it would be a good idea to take the things off the wall behind the bedside tables. Then take everything off the tables except for the lamps.

Pick one of the bedside tables and arrange a couple of picture frames of different sizes and textures.

Everything else can stay...it's a pretty room :)

Okay, here is what I did. I put the 2 landscape pictures from over the bed in my sitting room & I love them in there(forgot to take a pic). I really need to find a bigger coverlet if I am not going to have a bedskirt. Any ideas on where to find oversized that can be washed(cuddle dogs)? Cream?

The plant, gosh, I figured that thing would have died by now!!Orchid sounds wonderful for when this one dies - someone brought me 2 of these & my thumbs are not green. These must be hardy plants;) I will work on making my pic frames more cohesive - silver? black?

Let's see what y'all think of this?
    {{!gwi}}

I guess this was kinda my inspiration...
    {{!gwi}}
Okay, now that I have looked over this post - it is really embarassing to put my pic next to the inspiration picture!! LOL:)
    Smiles:)

Johnatemp, I think you're definitely on the right track. Can you try moving the pictures closer to the bed, to the point where they're partially behind the lamp? (see your inspiration picture) In other words, center them over the side tables. I think you'll see a big difference.

Pattycakes, I am sorry I didn't answer your questions....the lamps I had made. I found them at an antique store - had them made - didn't work out for where I had intended them to go (story of my life). They are wood. Yes, the chest on the left is antique - not anything fine - quite common - it has a very pretty mirror that goes to it that is up in the attic. Okay, I am thinking now.......

I am not pleased with what I posted above. The inspiration pic I showed seems to be a queen sized bed so the round mirror has less space between the posts. Seems like my round thing is just kinda floating. Do you agree?

But one good thing that came out of this is I love my landscape prints in my sitting room - I will post a pic of that when my slipcovers come in. Can I just say that spackle is an ADD decorating gals BFF!!

    Thanks, yall

I would raise the print a bit higher also the plate or basket?? over night stands unless a person is 4' tall to view it and it would make nightstands appear less cluttered...if I were to try to view that print, I'd need to get down on my knees, course I'm 5'11" LOL

What a pretty, pretty bedroom. I don't think it's too busy, but there is something a little "heavy" about it, especially compared to your inspiration picture. I agree with sailormann about taking everything off the tables and removing the pictures behind the lamps. I'd start from there, then add things one at a time to get the look you are trying to achieve.

Your room is very pretty, but it does feel heavy to me. The thing I like about your inspiration picture is the artwork on either side of bed. They are not framed (not heavy) and give the illusion of looking beyond the wall. Your pictures are heavily framed and stop the eye at the wall. I also think there are too many pictures on the tables. One on each, plus clock, phone, lamps and a few more odds and ends to finish them off. Three frames on one is too many, too crowded.

Your lamps are gorgeous, but heavy compared to your inspiration photo. I would keep the lamps but find larger/unframed artwork. Your current frames are short and don't stretch the eye towards the ceiling, which will make your room feel larger. (Not that it is small, but you know what I mean.)

I like the pillows and throw across the foot of bed in the first photo. Replace the plate (?) with a sunburst mirror. You can find them online for less than 200 for the size you need.

I think it's a little busy. IMO, if it seems busy to YOU -- then thin it out a little using some of the already offered suggestions, but do it slowly. It's lovely the way it is, but possibly a little unsettling because there is a lot going on around the bed. Oddly enough, I think if the rest of the room is as tastefully busy as the bed area, the overall impression would not be a busy one. If all the activity is around the bed, then that part of the room might appear "busy" to you.

I tend to agree with both Allison and Cattknap. But, I like your room equally as well as I do the inspiration picture and for different reasons but I do feel your room is warmer and more inviting. I agree with Cattnap that you needed something more substantial over your bed. Wonder how the two framed pictures over your bed would look over the chest that had the round piece and find something more glamorous for over the bed. I do agree with Allison that a sunburst mirror or a bull's eye mirror even would be a great thing. I love your room and think it looks fabulous.

I think you have good taste and a good eye, but you are doing so much at one time. Perhaps you need to back away so that you do not become too subjective and critical of your own decision-making.

Isn't this forum great!! You have some wonderful ideas to try. I like your wall color and your bedding. I agree the round item is floating, also agree the art should go frameless and higher. I might suggest trying only one plant and fewer photos in similar frames. Do you have room for a bench? I like that in the inspiration photo.

I like the idea of a sunburst mirror, too. If I remember correctly, you're a "neighbor" of mine. :) If so, be sure to use some velcro on the wall and mirror back (or whatever you hang over the bed), just in case we have one of our periodic earthquakes while you're in bed.

    Very pretty room!
