Sink sizes

I originally planned for stainless steel farm sink. The only one that will fit in my cab space is a 24" porcher model. I cannot fit the other brands / models available as the cabinet will be 27" and a custom sink isn't in the budget.

The designer mentioned that I do have room for a larger undermount and there will be more sizes to choose from.

The useable space of the farm sink will be 21x17x10 so i can definitely get more space with the undermount.

Is a 21" size sink too small? What do you think?

This is exactly my problem as well. (Kristy, is this you?)

I do love the Porcher sink. Really a great looking sink. I didn't think a corner farm house sink was going to be possible for me. I didn't want to mess with plumbing and I like the U in my kitchen.

I've been trying to think about how I actually use my sink. Mostly just for rinsing off dishes to go into the dishwasher or cleaning fruits and veggies. Handwashing my non-stick skillet. Draining pasta.

I wonder if when the farm sink isn't as popular if I will regret not having a larger sink. I could fit a monster in that corner with an undermount.

Good luck and let me know what you decide.

While I love the stainless apron front sinks, IMHO if I had limited space I would get the larger undermount sink. My sink is 27" width (interior) and I use every inch. Also, unlike appliances which can be switched out easily, a sink is pretty permanent. In the years to come, when your yen for a farmhouse sink is long gone, you will still be wanting a bigger sink. If you cannot decide, try taking some large pans and a couple of dinner dishes with you to a showroom with the Porcher sink and see how they fit. That real-life example will help you tremendously in your decision. Again, just my $.02.

Thanks akchicago. That is a dose of reality even without the showroom visit. I haven't found the sink on display anywhere near me to try. But, I think that your point is well taken. Choosing the sink because of looks over function doesn't seem right for the long run. It's not as if an undermount is in any way a bad choice. I'm sure I can find somewhere else to spend the money.

Mugsy42 - Not Kristy, but I hope we can help each other. I use my sink for the same things, but my kitchen is open to my only living / dining space (nyc apartment). With a larger sink I can probably 'hide' more in there when entertaining and not see it all from the rest of the room which would be nice.

Thanks both - I think I've decided - regular undermount it is. Now, which one....

It's not too small for me. I have a Blanco Silgranite Vision undermount with usable space of 21 x 15 x 8 (24 x 18 in. cutout). I was nervous about the size till it was installed. I can perform all kitchen tasks easily. Everything lays flat for washing except a large pizza pan. If you typically let a lot of dishes pile up in the sink to handwash them, it might be too crowded. We used to handwash a lot, but we paid $$$ for a new Miele, so we're using it!

Be aware that you won't have as much room behind the sink for your faucet and soap dispenser, so if you're getting a bridge faucet, check that a dispenser will fit. I had planned to put my dispenser on the right but had to switch it because of the faucet handle.

Here's a photo to give you some perspective, but it looks much bigger in real life. There's 16 in. behind the faucet, but it looks like about half that in the photo.

You are right, that doesn't look too small! Maybe I will need to just tape it out on my counter now and role play. I had a double sink before and each side was too small for me, but I never measured it and now it's gone so I am at a loss.
    No bridge in the plan.
    Thanks!

Take a cardboard box and cut it to size, including depth. Role play with your dishes and that will tell you what to do.

I had a double sink before and this one is much bigger than the washing side of my old. I was afraid we wouldn't like rinsing into the same dishwater we washed in, but it hasn't been a problem at all. Even at 8 inches, my new sink is deeper than the old, so there's no chance of overflowing the sink with rinse water.

We had to make the smaller single work because we wanted the 27 inch sink base in our peninsula. The smaller base allowed us to add another cabinet for a trash pull-out.

We have a small kitchen and the sink is in a corner location. I really wanted the Ticor apron front single-bowl stainless sink, but it would not fit with a corner installation. We opted for an undermount sink instead (we changed to Silgranit too), which has a 30" width exterior (don't remember what interior width that is). We had to notch out the cabinets on either side of the corner sink to get it to fit. Now that I've lived with it for more than a year, I couldn't go smaller for a sink. I can rinse out my heavy Lodge enameled cast iron dutch oven without banging it against anything. I can put a bunch of stuff in there to leave until later. I don't miss the apron front sink at all. I think the idea of a cardboard mock-up of your sink options is a very good idea.

Had another sit down with my designer yesterday. And the contractors came by. The way we would have to do the apron front sink was a real hassle.

I'm going with a Silgranit undermount sink. Single basin and as big as possible. 33 inches - I think. Once we pick out our slabs, we will pick a color. I loved them when I saw them in a showroom.

I decided that what I really want is a big functional sink at this point. And I already have a lot of stainless surfaces in my kitchen. I don't really need more metal. (I have a big stainless hood going up about 3 feet from the sink.)

My dream kitchen is in my dream house somewhere. Don't get me wrong. I love my house, and I hope to like my new kitchen.

    Good luck with your decision.
