Turn hinged cab into trash pullout?

Hello everyone,

I was on this forum a bunch four years ago when I renovated my kitchen... but now we've moved! And while my new-to-me kitchen should be just fine, it needs some fine-tuning. Step one: trash.

Next to my sink cabinet I have a 12-inch cabinet -- drawer on top, hinged door on bottom. It looks like I can use a product like this one from rev-a-shelf to put in a trash pullout, and then mount the existing (currently-hinged) door to the drawer slides.

My question is: has anyone here done this? Advice, experience, and words of wisdom much appreciated!

I'm thinking about doing the same thing. Lowes has the pull out hardware with a garbage pail and it's much cheaper. A single pail will fit in the 12" space. Has anyone used this product? I just wonder if it holds up as well as the rev-a-shelf.

"It looks like I can use a product like this one from rev-a-shelf to put in a trash pullout, and then mount the existing (currently-hinged) door to the drawer slides. "

The door attachement at the bottom is a weak spot in every pull out like this I have seen.

If the trash can gets loaded the torque produced on the panel to bottom attachment is large, as is the load every time the pull out is pulled to a stop.

I have had to repair a number of these over the years.
The thin metal and the welds used simply crack.

This is my trash pullout. I installed it as I assembled the cabinet. It uses accuride slides, and a high-grade plywood frame. Since the frame is at the top, there are no torque stresses to the assembly, and it's as good now as when new 4 years+ ago.

It could theoretically have been made by Hafele; Conestoga was the cabinet manufacturer, and some of their other components were from them, others from RAS.

We did exactly what you're talking about: turned an existing hinged cab into a trash pullout. We love it. We bought a Rev-a-Shelf double 35l trash pullout and a door-mount kit from Lowe's (off the shelf). It's been in place for over a year without any issues. We use it only for plastic and glass recyclables (sp?) and do put the glass in the back container to have the most weight farther back. Don't know if future years will see issues as brickeyee has; there's only the two of us adults in the house so not alot of harsh treatment.

I love OEM looks so "we" (DH of course did all the actual work lol) took out the hinge screws but left the hinges so the cab still looks like all the other cabs.

here's a pic with the pullout

here's more detail on the door attachment. This was definitely a PITA as it had to be measured exactly and DH had to fit the piece of luan on the inset panel of the door to make it even. I see that R-a-S now has a kit for that too.

Our cabinet opening is 21 1/4" was plenty wide as it had to clear the disposal and plumbing.

Do measure your opening and the proposed R-a-S very carefully!

I did that a few weeks ago. Mine just happened to be a perfect fit. It was easy since I didn't need to shim the sides or anything and it's a huge improvement. I need to stop customizing my kitchen or I might not ever get around to remodeling.

For some reason I didn't want to store anything in this nasty old cabinet. :)

Our trash does tend to get overfilled at times so I thought it was fine that my trash cabinet is extra tall (no drawer).

I bought this one because it was the biggest double for a 12" hole:

I should add that this is a really sturdy product and I kept the door pull on the side where it was before and it slides perfectly. A 3-year old boy uses it and I can't think of a better test. You won't regret this upgrade, even it it takes all day to install.

Thanks, everyone, for all the info!

Fori, LOL about customizing vs. remodeling -- I know I want to remodel this kitchen some day, so I am struggling with how much tinkering to do now. And I'll have a 2.5-yr-old boy pulling on my cabinet, so it's good to hear that yours has passed a similar test.

Casey, I'm going to look into top-mount to see if that's something we could pull off.

Of course, my cabinet is only 12" wide so I might end up with something ridiculously small for a family of five, but I'm sure it will all work out...

    Thanks again everyone!
