Kitchen appliance lowdown

I am getting ready to undertake a complete kitchen remodel and would love to hear suggestions for appliances. Our budget is between high-end and mid-range appliances, but if there is a great appliance worth the spend we would consider it. We plan to have a 36" gas cooktop, electric double oven (preferably with one unit comprising a microwave/oven combo), warming drawer, 36" fridge and dishwasher (hopefully super quiet due to the open plan style of the house).

The process is a little overwhelming so the input is much appreciated! Thanks in advance for the advice!

I have ordered many of the same things -
Kitchenaid single wall oven and microwave/convection to go over it (did these units seperately instead of the combo as a=insurance that if one fails we don't have to replace the whole thing)
Miele dishwasher - the quietest one available - every professional (builder, appliance store managers, my cabinet lady, etc.) I spoke to has one in their own home.
Not doing a warming drawer - sorry.
Dacor 6 burner cooktop. Thermador has that clicking thing on the low simmer and I liked the look of the Dacor much better than the Wolf (sorry folks).
Going the Kithenaid 42" side x side fridge - built in (here's where we spent a ton)- the 36" ones just didn't have enough capacity.

I originally planned on getting a thermador cooktop but opted for a GE monogram instead. It has super-low simmer on all 5 buners without the annoying clicking that the thermador has. Coinsider getting separate wall ovens (micro and oven) instead of a combined unit. If one needs to be replaced later, it's much cheaper to replace just one of them instead of both. I have GE profile. the microwave has a trim kit that makes it look built-in. My dishwasher is Bosch and I got the one with no handles so it would not clash with the handles on my GE appliances. It is so quiet you honestly cannot hear it running. My hood is Broan 64000 series with a remote 900 cfm blower. It has halogen lights near the front and warming lights near the back. Very handy!

I love my GE monogram cooktop...the super-low simmer on all burners is great. I love my Monogram Trivection double oven too. The ovens have a warming feature so no warming drawer.

My fridge is a GE Profile FD, love the FD and the fact that it was the only model that had water on the outside of the door and the ice maker in the freezer. Love that the water only option doesn't take up space in the fridge.

I will never get anything but a Bosch dishwasher. I replaced my old one with my new for the remodel. In the Bosch line you can get lots of different configurations to meet your needs and even the lower priced fewer features are pretty quiet.

Okay, I must have been asleep at the wheel because I missed the whole clicking on low thing for Thermador cooktops. Is this normal or a technical problem that needs fixing?

I like its burner set-up the best because its small burner is the right size for 2 of my small pans. Most burners are close to the largest sized burners of my current cooktop and when I use my small pans on those, much of the heat go up and around the sides of the pan. Not very efficient!

busycook, I'm right there with you. Appliance shopping is overwhelming! Did you make any decisions and if so, what did you decide on?

I would start (and probably end) with BlueStar or Wolf for gas cooktops. They were my top 2...I went with a Wolf rangetop. I love Bosch dishwashers...had 1 in our last house and now have 2 (500 series...so middle of their pack). VERY quiet and do a good job for less $$ than the lower-end Miele we also considered. I am very happy with the performance of our Fisher and Paykel dbl oven, and also strongly considered Miele (higher end, though), and GE Monogram. I don't know much about units that are oven and micro combo. I have been through too many microwaves and wanted to be able to change that out more easily and affordably than a built-in unit would allow.

    Best wishes.

I'm just finishing a mini kitchen redo. I got the Wolf 36 inch gas cooktop and so far (have only had it a few weeks) I love it! It is gorgeous on my island and nice and big for lots of pots. I have the Thermador pop up downdraft, which I purchased because it rises up much higher than any other brand. It's working great, too.
BTW, I have a lower end Bosch DW and don't like it. Has been finicky in the last three years that we have owned it. I inherited a SubZero when we bought the house. It's from 1992 and, except for some icemaker issues, has worked well. Good luck!

For our remodel we bought all new appliances and the one that is my absolute favorite is my Miele oven. I already told my DH that years down the road when we need to replace the oven, it HAS to be another Miele. I never knew there could be such a difference in ovens! (On Saturday I started baking cookies in my KitchenAid oven but then finished baking the double batch in my Miele because the end result - taste/looks/texture is consistently so much better.)
(As "melinrk" mentioned, I also bought a separate oven and microwave so I don't need to replace both of them at the same time in the future.)

lisa a, from what I understand, the clicking on the thermador is normal. It doesn't have a true simmer...it sort of just keeps cycling off and on to keep the temperature low. Monogram has a true low temperature simmer. I love the burner shape on the thermador...it seems really efficient but the monogram won out for me because of the simmer.

    I am a Bosch fan.
My DH loves German cars and convinced me we needed to
look at Bosch. I love the entire appliance suite.
Not sure if they have a 36 but the Wolfe Ranges are
    awesome.

I love my Miele Optima dishwasher. I was unsure about the third row cutlery tray because I'm more of a slapdash sort of person. I thought I'd miss tossing everything into a basket. But nope! That cutlery tray is my very favorite thing about the Miele. Because of the way it holds and separates flatware, it really does hold fourteen settings and gets every piece clean. I had a lower level Bosch in my previous house. It was quiet and cleaned fine, but it didn't have the tray and the lower rack tended to slide off the rails. Have fun appliance shopping!

ccoombs1, thanks for answering my question. I was confused when I posted and in my mind had substituted Thermador for Wolf. We're buying a Wolf cooktop, not a Thermador but we're considering the Thermador pop-up to go with it - same combo as jeanteach except we're going with 30" for both.

Consumer Reports sometimes gets a bad rap here but I have to say that we followed their recommendation when we replaced our DW about 5 years ago, buying a KA in Kenmore clothing and we couldn't be happier.

When I think back to how I used to shop for appliances - walk into a store, open a few doors to look inside, look over the buttons and say "I'll take that one" - I'm amazed that I have had such good with my appliances over the last 20 years, disappointed by only two DWs. One was in our first house and I was so happy to leave that one behind. Now I'm researching the purchases to death and so befuddled that I can barely make a decision. Maybe dumb luck wasn't such a bad way to shop! LOL

I am happy with our 36" Dacor gas cooktop, actually uses propane and one of the few that comes factory ready for propane install. Love our Bosch dishwasher, quiet and efficient. So far, very happy with Kenmore Pro double ovens.

Also, we have the Electrolux Icon all frig and all freezer -- not so happy with these right now. After less than a year, the freezer has had two services visits to replace the thermostat and the electronic control. The day after the freezer was repaired, the frig. failed -- electronic control needs to be replaced. They are scheduled to be here tomorrow to do that. While this has been disappointing, I am lucky enough to have had an awesome contractor w/a relationship with the sales rep. at Sears where they were purchased. After the frig. failure, I sent an email to both contractor and rep. to let them know what was going on. Sales rep. called me the next day, had intervened to get service call moved up and told me to be sure and let him know if anything else goes wrong -- he will make sure I get replacement rather than fight about how many problems does it take to make a "lemon". While this is not a great review of these at the moment, I have been very happy with them until now and am hopeful that this will resolve any issues moving forward. Also, feeling grateful that my contractor and sales rep. are willing to stand behind what they sold.

Yikes, Alice462! Our Electrolux Icon all-fridges and all-freezer are all 3 still going strong after 16 months. I hope they stay that way! I just realized the other day, though, that if the freezer has any problems, I have no small freezer in one of my fridges to help keep things in the meanwhile... :-\

Yeah, rhome, it is a bummer, I have certainly let Sears know how disapointed I am in this right now. But, again, up until now all has been well. The techs that come say, "All the electronics in these new models, they all fail so much more often"......and this is progress???

Luckily, we stuck the "basement" frig from our old house in this basement 6 years ago and who knew how much I would love that little tiny top freezer!!! Also, the freezer failed slowly, stopped making ice one day (I thought someone had left the door ajar or was using up tons of ice, b/c it was so hot), then began to make a funny noise (which I was told was the fan hitting the ice that had built up), and then things began to get mushy....I had time to salvage most of that food. The frig. on the other hand -- first thing in the morning my son said, "Mom, the butter is squishy"! "What???" Unfortunately, lost most of that food...aarrgghh! Oh, did I mention the two birthday parties here this week and a "movie night" with some friends here tomorrow.....that gathering has turned into pot luck!

I sure hope yours continue to work with no mishaps and I am going to strongly believe that this is an exception rather than the rule. Otherwise, to consider replacing with another brand, I would have to consider what I would do with the entire wall of cabinetry that was built around these appliances, including customizing the trim kit that came with them so that I could have bigger cabinets above......nope, not going there. These are going to be fine, it was just a little blip, these are going to be fine, it was just.....well, you know, isn't believing half the battle?

    Take good care,
    Alice

I love my Sharp microwave drawer. I did not want to give up counter space or have to reach up. You can open the drawer and stir the food without having to lift it out. You don't have to bend to put food in and out as you would with a regular microwave placed under the counter. It is terrific.
