Bay Area Recommendations

I hope this is ok to post here; I didn't find many specifics with my searches and am hoping for a head-start on vendors. If you read my "horrible granite" thread, you'll know that we'll be making some modifications to the kitchen of a newly-built house we're buying in Menlo Park. Here is my plan right now -- replace granite with honed marble (love the Calcutta Gold I saw posted here), re-stain or paint cabinets, retrofit or replace cabinet to fit a Shaw's apron sink, and remove 36" cabinet and add a CornuFe 90/Albertine range in ivory.

So, does anyone have any recommendations for:

--cabinet re-finisher (I looked at Freeman Finishing's website out of Gilroy, looks promising)

--cabinet builder for possible modification (if I don't replace the cabinet unit/box with a new piece -- when we put our wine fridge in our current house, it was easy to pull out that cabinet piece)

--slab yard with a wide marble selection

--fabricator for marble countertops

--any other professionals you think I might need

Well, I sure cannot recommend my fabricator for counters. Go to google and search for 'soapstone crack' and view the link for "my soapstone has a 20 inch crack" here on garden web to read all about it.

    :-(

(Different topic: I've heard/read great things about the Lacanache over the CornuFe--maybe on the appliances forum?)

    Good luck!

Yeah, my inclination was to go with the Lacanche, but since I'm limited to a 36" space, the Lacanche options were either too big or too small. I didn't want to totally redo the cabinets -- just remove the section where the cooktop is now, which the Cornufe fits into perfectly.

These folks make fantastic cabinets. They have the capital equipment and facilities to do finishes that are the best. Their website shows many of the kitchens they have done. We met with them after working with other designers and they hit the mark. In just a few minutes they pointed out issues that the designers should have caught. We had them build a vanity for our master bedroom and it came out perfect (and I am a perfectionist) We are getting ready to have them do our kitchen in our pebble beach house. we found their prices reasonable for a very high quality product. Their advise was invaluable. I have no relation to them - just very impressed with what we have seen and our experience. Email me if you need more information. Steve

Slabs: check out All Architectural Stone (Hayward and Santa Clara), All Natural Stone (Santa Clara), and Pietra Fina (Hayward).
All Natural Stone has a tile selection to die for - you could easily spend 8 hours in there.
We selected Aluna's Granite and Marble as our fabricator. Granite is not supposed to be installed until October - I'll let you know then how it turns out.

We are pleased to recommend Bert Toth the owner of Vertex Marble and Granite in San Carlos for stone fabrication. We think he is outstanding. Perfect job. Cut out for sink is beautiful in spite of crooked sink, plus a perfectly fitted floating granite table top. Thoughtful layout, beautiful matched edges, perfect seam at sink and perfect fit everywhere. Could not have been a better experience. It is so gorgeous. Professional, on time, wants you to be happy, thoughtful and kind. A true craftsman and a gentleman. (650) 622-9678, www.vertexventures.com

I would recommend our fab/installer, Take it for Granite - in San Jose. They also have a tile installation division.

    On time, great work

I recommend Imperial Marble and Granite in So. San Francisco. I looked at about 20 granite places and they had the Costa Smeralda slabs that I had just about given up on because I thought I couldn't afford the slabs I really liked. They were priced reasonably and did a beautiful job of fabrication and installation. They also have a decent-sized selection of stone in their yard.

We had major problems with the Take it for Granite people in San Jose. Our counter top was not honed as promised, was installed 1/2" off straight on the island, and the sink cutout left an uneven reveal, our backsplash pieces were improperly glued to the wall and had to be removed and replaced. When we called the salesman on the day they were installing it, he was unavailable and NO ONE returned our desperate calls. When they came back to hone, they used the wrong kind of sanders and made a horrible mess. A drawer front was damaged and had to be replaced because no one thought to cover it or removed it. These were the only 3 pieces of 30x102" soapstone in the whole Bay area at the time, otherwise I would've told them to take it all back. There's more, but that should give you a good idea.
