Transitional kitchens include elements of both traditional and contemporary design. Eclectic in nature, they mix natural and man-made materials as well as finishes and textures.

For example, an Arts & Crafts or Shaker kitchen can be made transitional rather than traditional by lightening the color palette, adding bamboo flooring, and showcasing appliances rather than hiding them behind wooden panels.

Molding and fixtures aren't elaborate but do have some ornamentation.

I'm no design expert, but I think our kitchen fits in transitional Our house is MCM and we didn't want a kitchen that would clash with that but after more than 20 years, we were tired of the look of slab, no hardware cabinets. Also, our tastes lean toward simple lines, but full modern is a bit too sleek for us and we really like the patterns in natural materials. So we did a simple kitchen with shaker cabinets and very minimal molding that would highlight the grain of the wood and the veining of our granite. (Someday we will replace the white fridge when it fails.)

cloudswift - are those red birch shaker cabinets? remodelfla was looking for a picture of some, so if so, I hope she sees this.

No, they are natural cherry cabinets. They mostly but not fully darkened in that picture. Cherry starts out lighter and darkens over time with exposure to light.

Here is a closer view to see the grain better. For simple lines given that we have a lot of drawers and because it is consistent with traditional Shaker furniture, we did slab fronts on all but the tallest drawers.
